that Wildtrak one intrigues me. Anyone have or have a friend with a setup like this?

Reviving a slightly older thread...

Can anyone give me a bit more detail on fitting Thule bars on an Armadillo on a Wildtrak Ranger?

 

Where do you start? With Armadillo agents, or with Thule agents?

I fitted thule bars to my navara that has an armadillo. I had to drill through the armadillo and into the load bin which obviously isn't ideal for resale but I don't really care as the setup suits me hundreds. I bought thule bars and foot pads and mounted them with bolts through Armadillo and load bin. Then the proride's onto the roof racks. Only thing I would do differently next time is move the whole setup further back as I cant fit my bikes on facing forwards. I can easily fit 3 bikes on facing backwards.

Nudging this thread forward, on the exact same product hunt and surprisingly its not that straightforward.

the outer width on the bin rails at 158cm is an issue for the aero rails needed, minimum 165cm-170cm needed.

i am chatting to rhino rack now for a quote for this exact solution, but headed towards R10k before R5-7k for actual bike mounts.

I've hunted on aliexpress and the footpads and bars are under R3k delivered, but max width i can find is 130cm

Has anyone on here got this solution working? And how practical is it with half the bikes rear wheel hanging off the back of the bin?

The overhang to the back is not an issue ... not when you consider the new height of your loaded vehicle !! 

 

You cant park in a garage, or enter a a parking structure due to the height constraints ... so the bit of extra length is not a big issue.

Agree - of all the evils for transporting a couple of bikes on a bakkie, above the bin seems like the lessor.

im also at the point where im not sure above bin or on the roof is much of a difference, and sourcing a solution for the roof is alot easier

Only practical difference being the ease of loading the bikes ... or not ...

 

When I had the roof rack on the RAV4 I had to use a 2-step ladder to get the bike high enough for that last tilt and fix .... in terms of that the load bin "bike loading" will be so much easier.

 

Then again ... once the racks are over the roof ... the bakkie can still be used as a bakkie ...

 

too many choices ....

I have both options for my setup on a Ranger Wildtrack, so fit the towbar mounted rack when needed going into underground parking vs popping them on the back above the load box. The spacing meant that I could not use the wing bars from Thule, so had to go for the larger bars which fit with foot packs to the rails. I would have much preferred to leverage off of the t bolt mounting slots on the roller shutter, but could not get the fittings on without breaking some plastic pieces on the roller shutter. So not sure if I was missing something, my Ford dealership were not particularly helpful here either. So opted for this setup, the fairing means that you lose a bit of length and given that I ride XL bikes it was a bit of a fiddle on the rack setup to get everything to fit properly.  My bikes are light, so not too worried in terms of rail spacing, as it is not within suggested Thule spec, but would be cautious if your bikes are heavier. IMG_8054.jpeg.01fccbab86aaa87b50f353e993a1acc3.jpeg

I have a Frontrunner Slimline II rack with 2 of their Pro Bike Carriers and 1  Pro Fork Mount Bike Carrier on the load bin. The rear wheels extending beyond the end of the bakkie is not an issue for me. 

Pros
- Makes an already ridiculously long vehicle not even longer
- Keeps my bike away from dirt, dust, and stones that are kicked up by the rear wheels
- Its always there. No need to put it on or remove it the whole time (not a biggy)
- Can and have used the rack to carry and mount other items. 
- Bike weight isn't an issue (it laughs in the face of an e-bike!)
- Bikes aren't bobbing around on dirt roads (or Gauteng's tar roads!)

Cons
- The front of the bike looks like a bug fest when driving at night (towbar-mounted rack will solve this, but then add length and chip marks from dust and stones)
- Adds to fuel consumption when loaded up (towbar-mounted rack will have less of a hit on consumption)
- Trickier to lift e-bikes to load, but still a lot easier than loading a bike on a roof rack

I have a spare Frontrunner Slimline II rack at home if you're keen. Just needs the 4 mounts (feet clamps) and whatever you want to mount on top. The Fontrunner Pro Bike Carriers go for around R5k and are top-notch.

If you're referring to what I think, then the answer is that the T-mounts slide in from the front into those rail guides. Took me a while to figure it out.
