Rollers are fun......but the quality of workout the IDT wins by far!! My aim is to get stronger not work on my bike skills.....that you do when you do bunch riding with your mates!

So do you consider yourself skillfull after the third crash with your mates?

Skillfull not to fall in the first place!Wink

Can I hijack this.

There is people like me that got a problem with balance on the rollers.

My record for staying uprigth on the rollers is around 3 seconds.

Would it be usefull to get a stationary bike or use the IDT.

I've been using the IDT but my new bike have carbon stays and I'm worried it will get damaged.

Ian riding on rollers is an art and the secret is to ride in a straight line which is a great workout and skill for bunch riding. However to answer your question do the following.

Place your rollers next to a wall. Do not wear your cycling shoes to begin with but wear takkies so you can get your feet down qucik if you feel you are going to bail.

Get onto your bike and lean against the wall and start pedaling. Once you have got good cadence and a bit of speed then try to lean upright. If you feel you are going to fall, simply stop pedalling and use the wall as leverage with your shoulder to stay upright.

Once you can ride without using the wall for assistance then put your shoes on.

Also the higher your speed the easier it is to ride on rollers, when your speed drops to below 20km's it becomes very difficult to balance on them - so try to ride in a higher gear and keep your speed up.....good luck

My bike also has carbon stays and I also worry about putting it into the IDT.

But the trick to get a real workout on rollers is to Average 60+ km/h.... An average of 31 km/h on rollers is a recovery ride' date=' or a warm up before a tt... Not a workout....

[/quote']

ave 60+ km/h on the rollers for an hour without holding on to anything or anyone holding you upright?  I will pay good money to see this!

How much money??????Evil%20SmileEvil%20SmileEvil%20SmileEvil%20SmileBig%20smile

Maybe we should put on a demonstration, we could charge an entrance fee... Maybe raise some coffee ride funds...

Good Idea there TNT but maybe no coffee, but all donations go to Shaun's signs???

101% does 290watts on the Rollers - must sound like a jet about to take off

101% - are you mad?  (in fact,  don't answer that!)

what type of cadence do you do when you do this?

don't you bounce around so much that it feels like you are going to hop off?

this has to be on rollers with the metal drums like kreitler and some proper link between the front and rear rollers - not like the cheap TACX plastic rollers i have.

Surely different makes of rollers have slightly different rolling resistances ? Comparing one persons average speed to anothers if they are on different brands of rollers would probably not be comparing apples with apples.

Normally keep it in one gear to play around' date=' riding loose hands, bunny hop and stuff like that.

Really? you got a video cam so you can record this for us when you attempt bunny hopping on your rollers? See if you can pull a wheelie as well...

Its possible. Did it twice after crashing more than 60 times. Practice makes perfect!!

Had it on my friends phone, but they stole it. I had a wall to my left and bed on my right. That helped a lot. One or two nasty's falls that hurt where it hurts most. For the rest was it good fun.

if you use a powermeter you will see that it

is really difficult to get above 200 watts on rollers even if you are

sitting in the hardest gear you have.

ok, ok - i was talking cr@p -

if you really concentrate you can go hard on the rollers.

did a short session on saturday and found that i can get some decent wattage figures.

i did however really start panicking when going at 50kph + - really requires a lot of concentration and it burns like hell!

guys like 101% must be really brave for hanging on at 60km/h for over an hour - build good TT skills it would seem!

doing 2x20's will be possible,  but in my case rather dangerous.

I had go at it last week with my new PT (thanks Bruce)!!!!!

Riding 50km/h on a 53/12 I was averaging 290W, so now I've fitted a 53/11 . I reckon one could sit at 330W at a speed around 50km/h. Fun part about rollers is that you concentrating so much that you not aware of the time . An hour and a half  flys by!!!LOL

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, that is what I like to hear....the fact that the time flies by.I hate sitting on the IDT and trying to think of everything but the time...as specially when one tries to go over the 60min barrier

No way - I think time stands still on the rollers - it feels like you have been putting in a massive effort for 20 minutes, and you look at the time and 5 minutes have passed.

Climbed on them last night for the first time in ages, and I could feel how badly I had been pedalling out on the road - rollers are great for improving balance and correcting the pedal stroke. And for suffering.

So, you finally broke down and got an 11 - I can just see the pain on the faces of the guys trying to hold your wheel when you hit that 53x11.

330watts on rollers - that is cooking!!  But I hear the world record is 164km/h at a cadence of 250+
