I only support races outside the Vaal Triangle area where I can collect my number before the race. Two I know off is the Carnival City Macsteel and the Dischem Ride for Sight races. I also do the 94.7 because I like to go to the expo. But, races organised by ASG I will not support anymore. The last time I wanted to enter one of their races I mailed them to find out whether I could come and collect before the race, they did not even bother to respond to my e-mail messages!  Coming from Sasolburg to Johannesburg for number collection ads at least another R250 to your entry fee.

Sooooooo, just e-mail me the race number, and I will print it out myself. I will even do it in full colour for the sake of the sponsors' logos!

Why doesn't someone start a petition to the leaches at Cycling SA to get this number collection mess sorted?
Especially for licensed riders who pay an additional R350 a year for goodness knows what? a similar system to running should be used whereby regulars have a set number for the season.

When I entered the Ashburton Meerendal MTB race I was given the option to have my race pack couriered to me. I thought that was an amazing idea and might work in the cases above where entrants cant get to registration.

Sorry for the hijack Hubbers. I have to go abroad for work this week and can only get back to SA on Saturday evening. I've entered the USN race at BRB and won't be able to get to collect my goodies on the Friday or Saturday. Can anyone please help with collection for me? There will be a crafty or two with your name on it for the effort. Pretty please. Thanks. Hijack off..

So ANY race organisers out there that has thought of a better idea of printing race numbers?

Thus far everyone wants me to ride through 2 days prior to the race to pick up a piece of paper.......

I have now made a FIRM point of NEVER buying anything from any shop that "hosts" this race number pickup things

Any organisers that are willing to "team up" and give ONE race number to an entrant to compete in say 4 different events?

Gauteng wise.......I would buy a "package deal" where I get one number for all these events:

Fast one

Serengeti

Ride for Sight

Carnival City

Berge and Dale

And yet nothing.....

I can tell you that the race committee from the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic spoke to the organisers of the above races with exactly the same thought. One entry fee for 5-6 events, with points being awarded to the top finishers in each event. Almost like a mini-tour, with a series leader jersey and more. One race number, one payment, and less wasted time for many.

The level of cooperation was pathetic to say the least - everyone wants to do their own thing. It's a case of each looking after their own interests.

We have at least got cooperation from a few events to share race results for seeding purposes - not that it makes a difference to the licesed categories.

The starting point would be our provincial affiliate - and the people required at a meeting to express their view/disappointment/suggestions/improvements would be the cyclists. If we don't get enough support from the participants, with the backing of our provincial affiliate then it will carry on as is.

Although I have a full time job, as well as my club committee position, a family and a life - I do at least know people who know people that we can talk to about this. But then we need to be serious about this and implement it. With that said, I have enough on my plate until mid-March (and that doesn't include doing that event that monopoly in the WC runs).

If you enter the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic and you DON'T live close to:

  • CycleLab, Centurion
  • CycleLab, Fourways
  • Tour de Frans, Boksburg

then please make use of the courier option to have your number delivered to your door.

For the licensed riders, sorry, it's CSA that dictates that licensed riders MUST present their licenses at number collection. If we had the choice, we'd prefer to distribute numbers in a more efficient manner.

I have decided I no longer drive out for race numbers. I print out my race registration confirmation and keep that in my pocket to show if anybody tries to stop me, and thats it. I am sure they cant force me not to ride if I have proof i paid. maybe if more start doing that they will getr the message

I believe this to be the answer. This is what I do every race and I have yet to be stopped or prevented from riding. I have had to have a firm word with Marshall's in the starting gates once or twice but have never actually been prevented from riding.

You still get your time through racetec etc.

My view is that if more people do this they will wake up and change. If they start to block me I will stop riding their races

Jip, I do the same. I never collect my race pack. I print my confirmation and pitch up.

Rotiringer.

The issue for me personally is that if you ride licensed, then they WILL kick you out the batch.  So it is not an option for the racing cats.

It is a vicious circle (from what I understand):

  • If you want to race on SA roads, you have to get permission from the traffic department
  • The traffic boys required approval from the sporting body (CSA in our case)
  • CSA dictates that you have to present your racing license in person at race number pickup.
  • Cycling events / PPA / CSA has been and will most probably always be a closely knit unit.  If you use one of their "services", you have to (might as well) use all

Nice little niche market created....

And I don't think it is going to change any time soon.  Road cycling will keep on declining and years from now "they" will ask but why did no one do something about it?

Roll back 15 years ago.

No Cycle Events.  No ASG.  Just you and your provincial body and CSA.

You enter your details at the provincial body and instead of giving you a useless little card to pick your teeth with, they gave you a race number.

You used THAT race number in all your races.

No mess, no fuss.

Number collection is absolute bull@@@ and it's really killing road cycling.

You register with CSA, you get a number, and that you use for the year.

You register online for a race, enter you're CSA details, and this should be it!!

You get to the race on the day with your race number as issued for you at registration with CSA. Happy racing starts!

Done, finish, no nonsense

Go speak to the people in the running world, that's how it's organized for many years...and it works!!

I will never ever pick up my number previous a race. I live in Klerksdorp and do most of the Gauteng races. Each race petrol money = R500 approx. To pickup my number another R500. I will pitch the morning of the ride with my printed confirmation and ride with that if they don't want to give my number.

Assuming all the parties involved could get together around the same table and bring suggestions that will improve ROAD CYCLING for the masses, would you be interested in attending, or are you one of the many that complain, or keep quiet/stay away, when the opportunity arises to do/say something about it?

It would involve anyone that takes part in Gauteng-based events, initially, and if it works perhaps it could be rolled out further to the other regions.

I wear 3 hats in the world of local cycling... rider, club committee member and an active contributor for an event organiser. I know who to speak to and I'm not afraid to make contact with the relevant parties, in a structured manner to find a way forward. Sure, there will be barriers that need to be smashed through, and for that a thousand voices are better than one.

However, I can't (and won't) waste my time if the masses decide to keep quiet - I enjoy the limited time I have at my disposal to ride a bike or bike related activities (depends what hat I have on).

Hi

Happy to collect for you if you wish. i will go and collect my number on Friday morning if that helps. By the way, the race is on Saturday, which may make it difficult for you if you only arrive on Saturday evening.
