Years ago I was in eventing.

At one stage I built and POCed a self help registration terminal. Looked something like this.

Basically the same thing the Airports use for printing your boarding passes.

How it would work is that you register for an event, pay and then get a payment confirmation with a unique ID, just as we already do.

When you enter your ID, it would check which organisations you were affiliated with, in our case this could be your PPA, CSA, Racing License etc details via a very simple API. This solves the need for a laptop wielding CSA tannie.

Then in your own time you can go to any of these terminals distributed across many bike shops, enter your ID number and unique payment number, and print your number, and seeing that you control the printers you can control the type of paper being used as well as the size etc, just as the airports do. This solves the paper quality and driving feet to bike shops issues. Bike shop owners can be remunerated a small fee per ticket printed in their shop, this will support and incentivise them.

On race day you could then pop a few of these self help terminals at the start and people can also self print there in the want.

To do this you just need access to the check data on the main events databases and CSA's data bases. BUT I think thats were it will come unstuck they dont want to change.

It took us as lighties about 2 weeks to build this for a 15000 delegate conference in CTICC, 10 years ago, those terminals are still in use, so the ROI is there.

Basically what I also had in mind.

It would take only one organizer / seeding agent to roll this out and you will soon have everyone on board. But we are stuck in the stone age.

Why can't CSA supply 2 numbers with special chip inside it, one for road and MTB?

Everybody must enter if they want to take part any races. At the start of the race, CSA can check, if they have paid or not... Finish & Klaar

So this is still a thing. I am amazed. It’s one of the reasons I stopped racing. Th big mission to collect numbers.

Things I hated about racing

Awful parking at events

Picking up numbers

Dealing with CSA website

Paying CSA

Seeding Chaos

Karoo to Coast is using a number board with a chip in this year instead of the racetec chip. I am hoping this means that once you have your board, you will continue to use it for every subsequent event you ride, and also for other events affiliated to it, perhaps even CTCC?

If so, will this mean that one does not have to do the drive to Uniondale on the Saturday AND the Sunday for the race? Logistically, it as a HUGE pain in the nether regions.

Lucky for them, at present the race (ahem, fun-ride) makes up for it in heaps, so I tend to not worry too much about logistics...for now.

Number boards on road bikes.....

Its bad enough that they allow MTBs in road events

I'd happily ride with something like this on my bike compared to driving to shops or other locations to collect a printed number that I then have to pin to my shirt every race.

Not quite sure those are the boards they have in mind for K2C

Jip I do agree with this...I would happily pay for a board like this (with a small Racetec chip inside) and have that permanent on my bike!

These (big) MTB boards are normally in front of the handlebars (with cable ties) and visible from the front...normally taken off when you get to the finish line to be used for the next race...I can not see most Road racers having these MTB boards on the front of their ROAD bikes...just looks a bit k@k on a road bike and the racing snakes WILL MOAN about the wind / drag coefficient   :whistling:  LOL

Now there is a great idea, one that has been touted many times here, unfortunately this has fallen on deaf ears

Since it's Friday?

I ride my mtb in the CTCT, as I couldn't give a toot about road riding in general, and I just don't feel the need to A) spend money on a bike I am not interested in to ride, B) unseat my tubeless tyres to fit slicks. I am just too lazy for that chore.

But then, to be honest, the CTCT is really just a mass participation event, and anyone with a bike can and should be encouraged to ride it, no matter what type they use.

All the road bike puritans, who take exception to this "travesty" can choose to skip the day, and go pose somewhere else with their latest kit and coffee fetish.

As for me, I intend to ride the CTCT 2019 on my trail spec full-sus complete with knobbly tyres, not being fazed at all about where I place in the grand scheme of things. I am not planning on winning, so I don't intend to "race" for 13876th place. I just want to catch the beer-tent still open.

I hope you at least make an effort to shave your legs for the day to get into the spirit of things....and leave the Camelbak at home
