Jeeez bud... have you seen how gross hairy legs look in lycra shorts... especially the assos type ;)

JEEEZ Bud. Have you seen how gross lycra shorts look??!!

Especially those ass'ol ones that clip over your shoulders. Why is it that after every race guys walk around with these things unclipped?

It looks like an epic G-sting BLOWOUT.

First post was spot on. Shaving was traditionally done for two reasons:

To prevent infection after a crash and road rash.

To help make post riding massage easier.

Both of these evolved out of races such as the TDF where the physio and doctors had to find ways to keep their cyclists in the game as well as do all they needed to do (in this case quick, efficient post race physio and massage) in the little time they had after stages.

While getting a post race rubdown on the quads from the wife the other day she said to me: "I am so glad you shave your legs..."

"Why?" I asked.

"Well, guys with leg hair start crying like girls when they have leg cramps and the physio has to rub and man handle their legs to get rid of the cramps. The hair just makes the pain so much worse!"

Friction. Good old science.

It just looks better, but my standard answer to the more macho side of the family is that it prevents ticks from sticking - then it sounds like I'm riding in true bundu country.

Leg hair keeps mosquitoes away. Why shave it and risk the itchies?

So that it is easier to put the Tabbard on

why cycling shaves thier legs... hygiene

cyclist sweat and we sweat a lot of hours at a time... normal washing does not remove all the bacteria festing sweat clinging to your hair....

so shave your bl@@dy legs and be cleaner..

Purely from a steel scrub used to remove tar out your legs after a tumble - take it from me - its worth it! Secondly, if you gonna wear Lycra and for aero and the whole PRO effect - you may as well shave da pistons! You look a royal chop with your latest and greatest ASSOS on your machine and hairy legs... Plus a good massage is that much better without the fur and if you have a problem with muscle definition as I do... it helps to make your legs look a bit more defined ;)

Geez bru.

What kind of blanket are you carring there then?

Gross.

Tip for mosquitoes.

Garlic.

Take captules every night before going to sleep (it drops your blood pressure so it may make you light headed in the day and you will also stink during the day if you take it early.)

Well they generally stop biting you when your blood doesnt taste nice. Takes a little while to kick in though.

Other bonus. It boosts your immune system big big time.

I have had countless times of feeling sick sick and feeling I am getting the flu. A few garlic gloves cut up (cheaper than the tablets for me) and swallowed 90% of the time I am as good as new the next day.

Oh, the odourless tablets are not as effective.

The stuff in the garlic that makes it smell is that good stuff (alicen or something)

So now you too can shave your legs and not look like chewbaka

I have contemplated the same question and could not find a good answer. If I fall, I have way bigger problems than infection caused by hairs. If it is more hygenic, I should shave all my hair (ALL of it), so that doesn't make sense. I don't ride for looks so I'm not shaving for looks either.

Then I had a massage on a 3-day stage race and the hair made it very uncomfortable (if it was a guy giving the massage, I might have been more uncomfortable  ). So, I'll shave before the Epic, but if you're looking for me, I'm the guy in group D at the Argus with the hairy legs (and the 12kg DS MTB). :D

All the most valid reasons are covered.

I shave mostly for 2 reasons. The overriding one being the massage part of it. Nothing more rejuvenating than a good quad massage after a hard day racing\training. The secondary one being that I know I am in a serious part of my training schedule and it's like a self affirming commitment to get up and train even when I don't feel like it. It's like flicking a switch to turn on good, consistent training with all the benefits of the other crash injury issues.

Not so sure about the shaving legs part but I have been seriously considering shaving my chest. I have been doing some marathons and a rather peculiar thing has materialized "bleeding nipples" especially when doing 21 and 42 km runs so tried attaching plasters to the affected areas and I can tell you when you try remove the plasters its no funny business. I have not got to the shaving part but its gonna have to happen sooner than later

It may look cooler in Lycra - but in every other context hairless legs on a dude - well lets just say it takes some getting used too :0

I dont intend to come off too often so for now i'll keep my legs the way God designed them :)
