I’ve cracked it, @Sid the Sloth. You’re basically our very own Tadej Pogačar — hates riding in the bunch, so you just go full gas all the time. Fair strategy though… can’t be in a bunch crash if you’re not in the bunch. 😄

The attached image is what I’ve been using for the last two years, mainly because electrolytes get expensive very quickly. The basic ingredients are simple: Sea salt (sodium chloride) Sodium-free salt (potassium chloride) Magnesium (citrate, glycinate or malate) All three are easily available at Dis-Chem, Faithful-to-Nature, Takealot, or most health shops. They cost a fraction of commercial electrolytes and a single batch lasts for months. There are some nuances with the magnesium. I use magnesium citrate, which works well, but it can upset some people’s stomachs. It’s cheaper than the other forms, but a quick Google comparison will show the pros and cons between citrate, glycinate and malate if you want to experiment.

Licensed (racing) riders

We’ve had both the 20” and 24” Scott Contessa models. From what I can see in your photos, the main differences might just be in the colour scheme. I actually preferred the rigid forks - they keep the bike lighter, which is great for smaller riders. My kids were around 19 kg at the time, and with the bike weighing just over 10 kg, every bit counts. The 2.4” tyres add a nice bit of comfort too at lower pressures. The grip shifters can be a bit hit-or-miss though. On our 24” I eventually swapped them out for inexpensive trigger shifters, and it made a big improvement - my kid was much happier with that setup. The grip shifters on the smaller bike was flawless and the only difference was 7-speed compared to iffy 8-speed (same brand) shifters. From what I can remember they were around R5500-R6500 new a couple of years ago.

First Tacx 2 Smart lasted a year (around 500 hours) and started making strange noises. It was replaced under warranty and the replacement started doing similar after 10 hours… Would not recommend. This was bought to replace my Elite Turbomuin which has probably seen 5-6 times the use and I will again have to get it out of the shed while I wait for the latest outcome.
