    HED Wheels

Give Richard Beswick a call, or mail him for more info. He is the SA agent for the wheels. Personally i think they are good wheels. I did a lot of research on them and almost bought a pair of Alps, but then managed to save up a bit extra and got some Zipp 404's. You can reach him on.. ( and he is very good with getting back to you!) richard@cervelo.co.za or Richard Beswick<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> 0861 CERVELO Fax 011 783 7532
  3. Hey Jason<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Ive done about 8 of these events over the last 3 years, and they are really a lot of fun! Its just over an hour of intense workout, but the 3 different disciplines really make it a challenge. My advice would be: The swim ? make sure you have goggles and don?t start to near the front. Its really chaotic when you start, and its quite scary with what feels like a million hands and bodies all around you, and getting kicked in the face is not fun. I think the first 5 mins of the swim is the worst, if you can handle that you can finish the face. Alternate between breaststroke and freestyle, and you will be out of the water before you know it. It?s in the river but I cannot remember being able to stand. Also as it?s a river so the water is moving, so you swim with the current making it a bit easier! Bike ? this is always the best bit, and as the guys have said expect to do all the work for 20km ride. You will have tons of guys sucking your wheel, but being a strong cyclist you should be able to drop them as soon as there is a slight hill. Its fun and you should average about 37km/h on this stretch. Just be careful last time I did the one at the <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Vaal, there were tons of riders puncturing on the road in and out of the resort. Ive never used aero bars, and for a 20km ride I don?t think it?s worth it. Just tuck down and ride in the drops. The Vaal route I remember being quite flat. Run ? always my worst leg, as I never train for it. Just settle into a nice pace that you can handle. You will see all the guys you flew past on the bike, jog past you, but as long as you keep running and don?t walk too often you should do it in about 25-30 mins. I always carry a bottle of water with me on the run, as it gets hot out there, and it?s nice to pour it over your head every now and then. Maybe also take a cap and put it on at the transition. Also remember to take a towel to dry your feet at the transitions. Nothing worse than getting out from the swim and putting on socks and shoes onto sandy / grassy feet! I change into my shoes at the transition and jog in them. I know it?s not easy or good for carbon soles, but it?s a lot easier than fiddling to put on shoes while you are cycling. Also maybe keep a spare bottle of fluid at the transition that you can sip on while changing. As for clothing, I would suggest a pair of try shorts at least. About R300 last time I checked for a reasonable pair at one of the runner group of stores. TYR make a nice range. They have a small padding that doesn?t absorb water, and it just makes the whole race so much more pleasant. One of those Cape Storm vests with make a good top for the run and cycle. So?Best of luck?Let us know how it goes!
  4. 3 weeks in Thailand!! Spending some time diving, and the rest of the time on the beach! Cant say ill be doing much riding over that time unfortunatly.
  5. Hey Spidey, looks awesome!! <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Did you sell the Six13 then, or have you now got both??
  6. There was an elite lady that kept riding in the front of our B Group bunch. (From about 70 - 90km) She was told to return to the ladies group numerous times, and threatened with disqualification. She kept trying to ride off the front of the group, only to get a small gap and be caught a few kilometers later. She was in a red jersey (not sure of the team), and got plenty of TV time while trying to ride clear of our group. It was actually annoying as our group was basically held up by all the official cars telling her to drop back, and TV crew hovering around her. Last time we saw her was at the base of Hekpoort, at the right hand turn where our group then caught the juniors as the leaders were comming through! And how dangerous was the section where the group passed the Elite ladies? The convoy of cars on the single lane road with absolutly no shoulder? That was at approx the 50km mark.
  7. <?:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" />One of the most exciting bikes ive ever owned... <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  8. Jade is one of the nicest and most professional guys i have ever dealt with. Be it fixing or replacing shimano parts, or mavic bearings etc, he is always willing to go the extra mile for you. I have met with him many times over the years (at Western Flyer and Cool Heat), and he always has time to give advice or for a quick chat. And i honestly dont mind paying a bit more to get my parts / wheels through Cool Heat, because i know if there is any comeback, Jade will sort it out no problem. If only the reps from the other suppliers were as helpful as he is!
  9. Yeah get some rollers, wake up really early (like 3:30 / 4 am), and warm up for an hour or so. It also gives you a chance to eat a decent breakfast! Thats what i do..
  10. The News Cafe is on Van Buuren Road, at the traffic light where Nicol meets Van Buuren in Bedfordview. The BP is on the corner of Kings and Van Buuren, about 200m past the News Cafe. And yes riding with the BCC boys is generally fast. I ride on Saturdays and the averages speeds are usually around 35km/h! But what do you expect when Craig and Marco are setting the pace! 11. I use 2 bikes with 3 sets of wheels. Its easy because they are all running 10sp setups. In your case I would get a 2nd set of wheels for the Specialized. That or upgrade to a 10sp 105 setup, either by buying a new bike, or just upgrading the old Alpina. Im sure some dealers will be selling off the 06 Raleigh RC6000 at very good prices when the new 07 models come in, maybe you could pick up a bargain that way? Personally i just think to ride and train on Dura-Ace every day isnt worth it, as the replacment of parts is so expensive. 105 10sp works just as well, and is about a third of the price.
  12. 550's are the worst wheels ive ever had! i got a pair on a Raleigh RC6000, which i stripped, rebuilt the frame with old parts and gave it to my brother. All i wanted was the 105 10 speed and the wheels. Big mistake! i should have kept the old 105 / Mavic wheels that my brother now has. Ive had the wheels trued, and the bearings adjusted a few times already by different bike shops. Always the same results.... The real wheel constantly went out of true, and the bearings are rough. My rear wheel hit a cat eye on a training ride once at about 40km/h, and one of the breaking surfaces on the rim folded inwards to about 45 degrees for about 2 cm! The tube didnt deflate, the tyre was fine, but the rim was stuffed. So i took a pair of pliers and bent it back straight, and now i only use it on my home trainer. The front wheel lies in the corner of my room, unused as the bearings are so bad that it harldy turns. I cant be bothered taking them anywhere to get fixed, as ill most likley just have the same problems again. Im not overweight (73kg), and i really look after my stuff. I rode them just the same as my other wheels, but they didnt last. IMO 550's are rubbish. Shimano will have to do a lot to get me to buy another set of thier wheels. For now ill stick to Ksyriums and Zipps.

  14. Yeah im in!. Going for number 8.
  15. Im also starting in A group. Best of luck to you all
  16. I can personally recommend Arron at Cycle Fit. He set me up on both my road bikes which has made a huge difference to my riding. He knows what he is doing (used to do the fittings at Cycle Lab), and is a really great guy. He works out of a house in Emmarentia. Charged me R350 i think to do both bikes and took about 2 & 1/2 hours. Give him a ring on the number posted above or mail him at mettech1@global.co.za. Good luck...
  17. Jason, yeah i agree with you. The more interest in the bike means people must be interested in buying it. And by the number of reviews there are obviouly a lot of satisfied owners. The Trek 1000 and the Six13 appeal to totally different buyers, so yes according to interest the Trek pips the Six13, but in thier market segments they seem to be the most popular bikes. It will be very interesting to see how your Soloist Carbon rates after a few months. Im sure it will be right up there. In fact if something happens to my Six13, the first bike on my list to replace it with would be the Soloist Carbon!
  18. Jason get your facts straight... Those roadbikereview facts refer to the number of people reading the reviews over the past week! Go see for yourself - TREK 1000 - 35 REVIEWS - RATED 3.51 out of 5 (3175 Views / Week) CANNONDALE Six13 - 37 REVIEWS - RATED 4.95 OUT OF 5 (3157 Views / Week) CERVELO R3 - 1 REVIEW - RATED 5 OUT OF 5 (47 Views /Week) CERVELO SOLOIST CARBON - 2 REVIEWS -RATED 5 OUT OF 5 (99 Views / Week) Lets see how the Cervelos rate after 35 odd reviews....
  19. Basso, What shops in JHB, PTA are stocking the Fulcrums? im in the market for some deep section wheels as well, and i have pretty much decided on the 404's, but i would like to have a look at the others if they are avalaible? And the Reynolds Stratus DV Cross wheels? who keeps them?

    Get a Grip

Yeah untill you get water under the grips and they move around like they have been lubed! Had a bad accident from that once and will never do it again. Best grips, like Titus said ODI lock-on.

    frame

Maybe the back wheel, but there is an obvious break just behind the head tube. Oh and that front wheel doesnt look too straight either. At least it wasnt the Boras!
  22. Ill keep my SIX13 thanks! smileys/smiley1.gif
  23. Was paging throught "What Mountain Bike' mag (April 06) on the weekend and they had a review on Mountain Bike saddles. The Gobi was rated with a Gold Award, but the over all winner was a SDG Bel Air! They also gave the Tioga Spyder a good rating. Its a saddle i have never seen before, and it looks quite interesting. Have a look... http://www.triathlete.com/store/images/products/large/SA1614.jpg Tioga Spyder Saddle Carbon Shell NiCro Rails Length: 270 mm Width: 123 mm Weight: 140.0 g
  24. Yip my TacX Flow also destroys tires. I bought a Conti Trainer tire, and use that now, but it?s a real pain to change all the time. Also it?s not the easiest tire to fit on the rim, almost snapping the tire levers when fitting it or removing it!!<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I want to get a pair of Shimano 550 wheels and leave the tire on that permanently, then I won?t have to ever worry about it again. And at about R1200 a pair you can?t really go wrong for the price.
  25. Best thing would be to contact the manufacurer, (good luck with that, although i have had some replies from Cannondale US), or to post the questions on international Cycling message boards. Or just do searches on google for the bike model, and you are bound to come up with a fan site, or a review where it is mentioned. Another search that works quite well is to search Ebay for a product, and you usually will find it. If its not listed under specs etc, try email the seller and ask him? Good Luck....
