  1. Anyone still have a roster of who is staying (at the moment) at Qhubeka(ASSOS/BMC).

I haven't seen Possovivo go, but a lot of they big Salary guys have moved on.

SA riders I assume are staying are:

    R. Van Rensburg

    S. de Bod

    R. Gibbons

    Not sure who else?

I think Gibbons moved to UAE

    Maybe Dlamini

  2. I think the big stumbling block is I could wear a Soccer Jersey out to dinner or to work and I wouldn't look like a tool.  So people tend to buy them as casual wear.

The last time I wore a Cycling Jersey anywhere other than on a bike was to a fancy dress party.

I too find this as a problem. I have no desire to buy pro kit but perhaps if instead of a cycling top they just sold branded nice fitting casual or sports T-Shirts then that could work.

  3.

i do appreciate the people that ask "are you ok" when i'm stopped at the side of the trail - but at least slow down to wait for an answer - or don't bother?

    my favourite

How many times I've ridden past someone standing on the side and then ask if they ok or need any help or tools yet knowing full well i forgot my tools at home nor do i have any mechanical skills  :whistling:

But yes, agree, at least wait for an answer and help if they need it.

  4. Don't ever stand in the middle of the trail when you stop. Get your ass to the side of the road. If there is nowhere to stand, keep going until there is.

If you're on a one-way trail don't ride back up the trail.

Ask another rider on the side of the trail if they need help. Especially a damsel in distress. Could very well be your next girlfriend. Even if you can't help them, a bit of moral support goes a long way.

Don't sit on a slower riders ass. Be polite, announce that you are behind them and reassure them that you will pass when it is safe to do so.

I got a bit irritated at the DBX the other weekend. Yes, everyone is not so fast on the single tracks yet but it does not give you permission to almost ride people off the road.

There was a gentleman that tried this, his back wheel was already half way past my frame, on a track which was not even 30cm wide. I just rode into the bushes, almost crashed but let him go pass but he then did the exact same thing with the lady in front of me.

this man is obviously a dwiss. don't be like him. funny part is...it's usually those ones that you catch again when the hills start...pushing their bikes

EDIT: that reminds me....if you are weak and have to push your 51T cassette up the hills..please do so well removed from the line.

was wondering about this the other day.

Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses  and i wouldnt look down upon someone who is better at descending but weaker at climbing or VICE VERSA.

But what is the etiquette when you wanting to pass someone on a single track whether up or down???? (sometimes shouting you wanting to pass doesnt work and you just get dirty looks)

Generally speaking I always stop and pull over to the side and let faster people pass (in either direction) whether racing or just fun riding as I know its a flippen pain being stuck behind someone likewise its irritating when someone is hanging on your wheel.

I am also sure its the same for the other person involved.

this is one of the reasons why i dont enter that many mass start MTB events because you bound to get stuck behind someone who cant climb or descend on single tracks.

This is further exacerbated when organizers of such events pride themselves by putting in as much single track as possible. - imagine being stuck behind someone that long just because they refuse to give way........

Of course if you racing for top spots then ignore this...

  5. You guys seem more angry at that drunk kid than at the scums that purposely drove into one of us to steal his broken bike and phone.

It is a tragedy, many lives broken, unfortunately these will always happen, no matter how arsh the law is. Incidents and accidents will always happen, weather caused by alcohol, texting, or just sometimes being absolute idiots. It is very very sad but that's how it is. When I go out on the roads I always hope my luck won't put me in a position like this, sometimes I'm even the idiot putting myself in a bad position and I get out lucky, sometimes I end up in hospital for crashing on my own.

Anyways, my point is, yes that kid made a mistake, a big one, leading to an aweful tragedy, but he probably never got in his car thinking he was going to kill someone, he's probably devastated right now, learning the hard way that this doesn't only happen to others. He destroyed his life, the one of the people he hurt, his parents, etc... I don't see the point of debating wether he must be hanged or burnt alive or if we must change the law or whatever.

    May the victim RIP

i don't agree with the sentiment that it was an "accident and he never intended to kill anyone".

Countless campaigns over the years about arrive alive and driving safety specifically focusing on speeding and drunk driving and how it has taken many lives and destroyed families over the years.

Yes he is young but at 22 or 28 he should be mature enough to make responsible decisions.

If you at the age where you allowed to drink and drive then you are no longer a kid.

anyone at that age should understand the potential risk and consequences of deciding to take the risk of driving under the influence especially given all the campaigns against this action.

If i start swinging a gun in public and it goes off and shoot someone can I claim it was an accident?

arguably though, the one coming at you with the intent to kill should be dealt with more severly...

However i wont be joining the lynch mob as I dont believe anyone is beyond redemption. Justice needs to take its cause and ultimately he needs to pay for his crimes.

My best hope is that he at some point in the future can make an equal positive difference in peoples lives.

for the victim. May God forgive and have mercy on him grant patience to the ones he left behind

  6. Then we can start on the real issue with cyclists and brakes. Having the front brakes on the left hand lever...

    now we asking real questions

Been a motorcyclist longer than a cyclist and even with a few years now of cycling  i still sometimes have to think which side is front or rear

instinctively i am always grabbing the right side for front brake

  7. im just wondering whether throwing support vehicles at club rides is the right answer.

If an incident was to happen - whether a jump from the bushes, or a hit, steal and run incident with car was to happen. Will the driver or whom ever in the support vehicle be adequately trained to know how to deal with that situation ?

The large group of hikers that got mugged and badly hurt by a much smaller band of thugs comes to mind. Even with large numbers, is anyone trained to defuse a situation with a gun or large knife?

I dont know what the answer is but if it helps as a deterrent then or at least assist the victims in someway then I can support it.

Maybe cycling clubs can come together and arrange safety workshops? get club members trained in first aid and some degree of self defense?

Traffic during cycle tour training season will be interesting....

  8. Good morning, we recently moved to to Tokai, I love MTB but my wife is more of a jogger/hiker. I am looking to get the activity pass but on the SANParks website it says that the activity pass does not cover running/hiking? Also we would like to train swinning in the silvermine dam but there is also no mention of swimming in the activity pass?

Could someone please help a newbie out? It also seems like the wild card only grants you access to the parks and then you are also not allowed to do any activities so that also seems to be a no go for us?

get the activity card whether you riding or not

its basically free access to Silvermine and tokai.

back in my Tri days I use to use to run and swim at Silvermine and accessed at the gate with my car without bringing any bikes.

Green card has a limited number of entries where as your activity card is all year round.

  9. Just being devils advocate here, but are we not becoming a pansy, litigious society. Dam I would have just chalked that up to whatever.

I really thing we need to grow a thicker skin, next we are going to complain about cyber bullying and name calling. We really have reached the bottom.

    On a similar note:

I have been cycling on a road that did not have a shoulder and was passed by too closely by a few rugby supporters in a double cab. I have them the hand (not the finger) and they turned around and we had a chat.

Net result is that I was tazed on my arm and they rode away laughing.

That I also chalked up to experience. Yeas It would have been in my rights to lay a charge (we had the reg no)

But damn it is what it is. Deal with it.

I learnt that I need to check my routes (this is not one of those cases) and then just deal with it.

I really do not have time to deal with the legal system, nor the ability to afford time off work to deal with a petty thing like this.

Then again I do come from an older era. If I really wanted to do something about it they would have not see me in a blind ally or the vehicle would be keyed etc.

I am older now so we move one.

    Millennials I tell you.

I get what you saying but two things come to mind

    1) its easy to say "ag no one got hurt" and it was just a tap and to be honest if it was me on the bike i would've probably let it go.

problem with that is that if i fell or got hurt i would have wanted justice.

someone else could've ended up in a much worse place.

This could also easily happened to a newbie cyclist and an incident like this could easily turn people away from cycling.

Therefore I would disagree with letting it go (even if i am inclined to).  At a minimum awareness needs to be raised about why this behavior is wrong

    2) I know it shouldnt matter the Gender but this would infuriate me more if my Mother,Wife,Daughter or Sister was the victim of this behaviour.

Therefore trying to be "woke", and treat incident as it should be treated. Its disgusting behaviour that needs be dealt with even if it goes to court. If i wouldnt take it lying down if the victim was a close women in my family why should we take it lying down if its a man thats a victim.

Something needs to be done, to what extend i dont know. But behaviour like this cant go untreated.

Tomorrow its someone else who is not so lucky.

  10. Looked into this. It was more beneficial upgrading to bulkier tyres (with supportive side casing) instead of using wafer thin tyres plus an insert to protect the rim to get the same result.

    Which tyres would you suggest?

I am coming from Spez Fast Tracks grid 2bliss 2.3

I dont want to go full heavy beefy enduro tires because i still like pedaling my bike uphill and doing marathon races but want to use the same tires and bike to tackle technical descending.

  11. A few years back people were raving about 32mm 130/140 revelations. Then when that became 35 the old one was suddenly a useless noodle. I don't buy into this.

    I'm also 70kg for what it's worth.

havent been in the game as long an many but my thoughts on this.

perhaps mountain biking or rather trail riding has become more technical over time? riders becoming more skilled and pushing the boundaries as time passes and this has exposed the short comings of thinner stanchions?

    or

being exposed to  thicker stanchions just made past experience with thinner forks feel like chalk and cheese.

its like comparing a new car to a much older one.(same model) Probably would notice the difference in ride quality, comfort, features  etc.

I do agree though that a good 32mm stanchion fork like a SID or even a Reba is plenty stiff enough for 99% of us.

    Just questioning the 30mm Manitou

  12. i was looking at these bikes in particular the non RS version i.e 120m bikes.

    2 things turned me down.

    1) 30mm stanchion fork

granted little experience with 120mm thin forks but i agree with what most have said that 120mm forks should have beefier forks.

wonder what the cost would have been if they spec a revelation or RS35 (or even a 32mm RS Reckon) and maybe downgrade the groupset to a Deore.

    2) x-fusion shock

based on international reviews i have read, reliability came into question and thus turned me away.

  13. I think we are speaking to ourselves here and we a small portion of the riding population.

Just my observation and can only speak to my own experience with the cyclists i know.

most would never venture on to any dirt road and if they do its an experimental phase at best.

And of those that do start riding MTB, many of them fear crashing, getting hurt etc. They comfortable with long days on jeep tracks ( growing gravel market segment). A few green/blue graded single tracks is perfectly fine to them and have no ambition to ride anything more technical.

for this an xc bike makes sense.

only very few this batch of riders want to challenge themselves with more technical riding.

This is reflected in our mtb racing scene. Our marathon and stage races are not technical enough that makes people question whether there xc machine is perhaps out of its depth.

    IMO

Most people who ride an MTB are just gravel riders - and that's perfectly fine

so called "true" MTB riders are far and few.

  14. I dont think the problem sits with the dealers/distributors/manufacturers. They only offer what they believe has sufficient demand.

Its the mindset of the customer base that need to change.

How do you get someone who is ready to purchase a XC bike to buy a trail bike?

  15. Hi hubbers

will be in Witsand this weekend and wanted to know if there are any local group rides i could join on either Saturday or Sunday.

Open to both MTB or Road.

if there aren't any groups do anyone know any good MTB trails close by? not anything too far out where i need to first commute with van before getting to the trail.

    Regards
