  1. Can every just leave Thomas De Beast alone to.. Jissie man we've all be waiting all tour for him to do his thing..

2 more need to go across..... Get 3 or 4 in the break to help him.

I really want him to win today.... Expecting the teams to launch a big move shortly

i was reflecting on why De Gent hasn't gone on his usual attacks like in the past for this tour and would like to hear the hubbers opinion on this.

Could it be his holding back because he doesnt want to put additional pressure on Caleb Ewan to make the time cuts?????

  2. Lycra was mentioned once. By me. Where is the hate exactly? Especially the "lots".

Nobody put anyone in a box. But if the box fits...

mmmmm..... maybe im a little sensitive on a friday.

Maybe i need to come out of the closet and just say i like feel of lycra on a mtb

  3. Lots of hate here for the lycra cladded XC MTB rider (the MTB roadie).

Dont put riders in a box.

Some actually like long day "adventure" riding into the mountains (no not gravel) where there is some mix of technical single track and long pedal climbing and for that a  xc bike/ DC/ short travel trail bike are all suitable.

Not everyone into MTB is just about being "Enduro bros"

We dont need to be put in a box.

Why cant i ride road, XC Marathon and sometimes Enduro .

  4. That is true, but it does raise another question, should I really be so stuck on getting a trail bike?

My interest is riding up and down Eden forest and the surrounds in Stellenbosch. I will never race, or ride long distances. That is why I thought I should get a trail bike.

    you say that but.......................

  5. Anyone notice these on the inside fo the barrier? Could be a possible reason why Sagan pushed his way out of a crash.

heard about this on the cycling tips podcast. They also mentioned someone with a selfie stick.

  6. since we drifting towards a topic about dog behavior in general, when did we become more tolerant towards dogs off leash bitting people?

if a cyclist gets knocked by a car then we want to get pitch forks out and lynch the driver

however when a dog off a leash attacks a cyclist, runner, kid etc then its "ag shame man, hope you get well soon, glad they paid for your medical treatment"

i still maintain, its shared space and dog owners need to understand that they dont own the entire park.

I still remember a few years back doing a trail run at constantia nek heading towards newlands where this dog came charging and lunging towards my chest. Pushed aside and then when the owner came around he just laughed it off and telling me the dog wanted to play. My response was not so nice.

You wouldnt like it if a stranger just came lunging at you for fun, nor a kid just running up to you and tugging at you whether running, cycling or walking. So why would you think its ok if its a dog?

  7. Sorry to hear this happened and hope a speedy recovery to the little puppy.

Two sides to the story and ill withhold my view on the matter until cyclist comes forward.

However this was always bound to happen at some point.

Dont know Delta park but in in the Cape, if a had a ZAR for everytime a dog walker couldn't f*&%$*@ control their dogs on any shared trails.........

This is why i just dont ride specific routes anymore.

    EDIT: on a calmer note,

to be "racing" and just riding reckless on shared routes is foolish and I am all for being patient and letting dog walkers get a handle of their dogs. I also dont mind waiting on them  and just smile and ride past.

But I do often get that one "chop" who just doesnt give a dam about what their dog does and doesnt think anything about their dog running after you or in front of your wheels even at walking pace,

Just no dude, im not interested in petting your dog while im riding my bike.

  8. Hi there, can anybody please give suggestions for easy MTB routes in the Durbanville/Bellville area.. its for a day off work as well, so scenic will be great but not a necessity. Thank you!!

Hi. Meerendal is nice for beginners

However i think you need to be a tygerberg MTB club member. Not sure if they open for day passes yet.

  9. I had my Forerunner 935 liberated from my house by a home shopper a few weeks ago.

    Two questions -

    1.     I have checked my Garmin Connect app but I assume if they re-format the device I won't ever pick up that it has              been connected ?

    2.     I need to replace the watch but in current climate I was considering by how much more inferior in quality would a            735 be compared to the 935 ?

I must say the 935 had all the bells and whistles but I am not sure I needed so many features.

I use mine mostly for MTB and then also running and swimming and the odd triathlon.

Anyone had the 735 and found it sufficient ?

    Hi

Sorry to hear about the home shopper.

Cant say I have experience with the 735 but maybe somethings you want to look at

the 735 lacks a Barometer. This may or may not be important to you for accurate elevation gain calculations.

Also not sure how good the battery life is on the 735. The 935 has amazing battery life.

Just my 2cents, if I was to downgrade on the 935 i would consider the Garmin Instinct. Its a more rugged and outdoor friendly watch that can take abuse and my understanding should have a solid battery life

  10. I am reluctant to mount my watch as it might damage the oHR 'lens'?

Have anyone experience using this QuickFit® Quarter-turn Bike Mount

not that specific brand but im using the quick release from Garmin for the 935 which is similar (https://buy.garmin.c.../557702#devices)

    Works well , no issues.

Although on close inspection, those ones look like it has a plastic hold/release lever where as garmin uses a solid metal one.

  11. my 2 cents

If you can only have one and have the budget get a mid to high tier watch.

Its way more versatile and useful for other activities as well

Most watches in that range can pair with Power meters, HRMs, speed and cadence sensors have multi custom screens that can display multiple data and you can even get a handle bar mount for it (eg like a quick release set for garmin https://buy.garmin.com/en-ZA/ZA/p/557702#devices).

Only issue is that higher tier bike computers tend to have bigger screens and display even more data.

  12. Newbie: I need to look like a pro! Riding pants and jersey.

Me riding for 26 years: I mostly wear a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

The older your get the less you care about looks. Unless you ride a SPESH

Not calling you an ou topie but this statement reminds me of that old dudes riding old mtbs at MTB Marathon races but giving A and B batch riders a run for their money.

    always admired those topies....

  13. Had a Rocket Ron /Racing Ralph combo for a while (SnakeSkin and Addix) for more than 2 years with no complaints.

Only recently switched the RaRa for a RoRo (Evo - 2nd hand tire) at the back... the RaRa thread seemed to wear out quickly.

Only other tires I ridden before that was Ikons upfront which was good and Spez Fast tracks at the back which i slashed easily (granted it wasn't the grid compound).

Had Vee Co Rail trackers which was absolutely crap upfront (although as a rear tire is fast rolling), however slashed two of these within a matter of months as a rear tire.

Been contemplating with switching to Pirelli in the future

anyone know how good Pirelli tyres are for XC/Trail?

  14. i am actually interested in the cost model of bike manufacturers in general.

Not to judge or criticize but purely academic reasons.

How much of "insert bike" does a manufacture need to sell at current prices to break even and what the demand is like at the different price points?

    controversial point:

Like a monopoly in any industry can destroy quality and pricing that customers receive, has the biking industry gone too far in the other extreme that it completely missed the  "perfect competition" .

Perhaps the ratio of bike manufacturers to bike buyers is not perfect and thus each individual manufacturer is selling too few bikes to lower the price in order to cover the costs?????

If we had fewer manufacturers, thus producing at a higher scale would that reduce the cost model of a bike????

  15. Yor, why is everyone so "judgerag" on what the wealthy mamils ride.

If an overweight unfit mamil comes dead last on the s-works version who cares, he enjoyed his money and race. It doesn't affect you or which position you came. His not taking anything away from you.

Also just to assume which bike would suit him better is nothing to do with you. Do you go around judging people who own Porsche GT3;s and say they better off in a Cayenne?

If it wasn't for them there would be no need to create these bikes.

I'm just glad that these technologies and advancements eventually trickle down

The top of the range bike is super expensive and probably always remain a pipe dream for most of us.

On the other side  we can have a long debate about whether prices justify product or not.

Comparing a R500k car to R100k car is very different. The difference is what you get is huge. Likewise with Motorbikes,

With Mountain bikes I start questioning whether you actually get a noticeable difference once you breach the R50k to R60k mark ( or has that gone up now)

Anyway I'm just secretly waiting for an Alu version that I can buy second hand in 3 to 5 years time.

  16. So, the Titans above the Spez?

Good suggestions, thank you. Perhaps something slightly better for me?

I'm not really into tinkering and upgrading every once in a while.

Yes at this price range Titan > Spez

I made a negative comment about the drivetrain but the reality is most bikes at that price range (even Spez) is going to have that low level quality drivetrain (and even potentially worse in other components)

what "Me ride my bicycle" showed is the same bike just with superior components.

  17. In terms of bang for buck you cant beat these

    For him

    https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/mtb/products/titan-drone-expert-2020

    for her

    https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/mtb/products/titan-drone-calypso-expert-2020

Not the best drivetrains but something that you can upgrade over time.

Titan has good warranty on their products.

Frames are more modern and much better spec'ed than any Spaz can offer at this price. :P

Titan has good warranty on their products.

  18. not an engineer and dont fully understand all this rear suspension wizardry but I do have one question that puzzles me.

Whats with the hybrid thru axle dropout???

is that a sacrifice is stifness to ensure quicker wheel changes? Will 99% of buyers care about a few second faster wheel change in sacrifice for stiffness?

Maybe I am misunderstanding...someone explain it to me in a dumb down version please.

  19. Eldron's shifter rule - whatever group you buy - buy the shifter from one groupset higher.

One of the joys of Shimano's new 12spd mtb stuff is the almost complete interchangeability.

The smart choice is the buy the permanent stuff like crank, shifter, brakes etc from the best group you can afford then do consumables like chain/cassette from the group you can afford sustainably.

    True

I am always amused that Manufactures sell bikes with a lower spec shifter and brakes and higher tier derailleur

  20. Ranting a bit (venting some frustration at lvl4 lockdown)

Not interested in buying a treadmill, have one already but why is it that some places are able to sell fitness equipment during lvl4 (Sportmanswarhouse..etc) and others cant.

And those that can are sold out on the very item you looking for.

Are some places taking chances? Making use of vary vague or loopholes in the law?

Why cant online trading just be opened up for all industries??????

    Ok rant over.

Im following this thread because I am interested to see which places are open and delivering and have any stock of any kind available.

  21. Shimano Deore FC-M6100 crankset  $94.99

    Shimano Deore M6100 12-speed 10-51 cassette  $91.99

    Shimano Deore CN-M6100 12-speed chain   $23.99

Shimano Deore RD-M6100-SGS rear derailleur   $54.99

    Shimano Deore FC-M6100 shifter   $31.99

    Full Setup = $297.95 - R5512 odd @ 18.5 exchange rate

    No Crank = $202.96 - R3755 odd @ 18.5 exchange rate

Please note this is the distribution price and most likely NOT the price in store as there will still be import duties and markup from your local store

So with a 15% import duty and a 20% markup (If you have a decent local store)

    Full Setup = +- R7606 Exc Vat --- R8747 Inc Vat

    No Crank = +- R5181 Exc Vat --- R5959 Inc Vat

Chainring not included extra on Full Setup R700 odd

Microspline not included at a extra R2000

Looking at a 8.7k - 12k to go 12 Speed Deore thats if you can do it all yourself and dont need a LBS to do it on your behalf as you would need to tention/feed the Jigwire, fit microspline, fit casette etc etc.

SRAM GX Eagle with Crank and Chainring on RRP comes in at R9000

    https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/sram-gx-eagle-dub-groupset-1x12

We will have to wait and see the local pricing BUT I can already see it being more expensive than a full GX setup by a long shot

if you look at whats available online, GX eagle is generally around the same price as XT and more expensive than SLX.

I am assuming the prices we see now online are based on the existing stock and at the prices these shops paid when the ZAR was stronger (before lock down)

Assuming the prices you have stated above are correct and we do see massive price hikes due to the exchange rate, you can expect price increases across all brands of groupsets to follow suit.

However if these stores are buying in bulk perhaps they getting it at a much cheaper price than the prices you quoting.

(Cant say for sure, dont have the inside info)

I think if things become too expensive and people may look towards alternative non mainstream groupsets in future......

My opinion, nothing wrong with the good old 2x or 1x 11 or 10 speed groupset.
