Not so much doping, But still cheating nonetheless is the matter of age cheating, Most notably in Football in our country and I've experienced it 1st hand.

In 03/04 I played for the Cape Town Academy, at the time which was the "breakaway" from the FC Fortune club after Quinton Fortune and his agent and club chairman Colin Gie's infamous fallout, So we were essentially the Man United academy is SA if you want to call it that, Very similar to the Ajax CT/Ajax Amsterdam link. Anyway, Because we were a new club to the association, we were put into the Promotion league and not the Super League against the other academy clubs like Ajax CT and Hellenic etc back then, Our 1st few games we were winning 11-0, 17-0, 15-0 etc and even beat Meadows 21-0. Anyway we had this 1 "kid" playing for us we called "Shoes" at the time, He was short (no red flags), but built like a tank (amber flag as we were u17 so 14,15,16yr olds). We were clearly too strong for the league but they refused to move us, we then played in a knock-out game where all leagues are combined and we played vs Tableview who were in the super league above us, Now if there are old ballies who can moan, Tableview possibly take the cake along with Edgemead LOL, Anyway We beat them comfortably, I think it was 7-0. After the game their coach came into our dressing room to ask to speak to Shoes, he took his name on his players card, ID number and asked what school he attended. On the Monday the Tableview coach went to the school "Shoes" attended and asked the Principal if a learner by that name with that ID number attended the school and the Principal said yes. He then called the kid to the office and a small, scrawny little kid came in. The coach showed the kid a pic of Shoes and asked if he knew him to which he replied and said it was his cousin who was about 22/23. When they asked the kid how shoes got hold of his birth certificate as you need it to register, the kid said that his birth certificate was missing for a long time and that shoes had possibly stolen it from their house. Turns out shoes was 23. We immediately had all our points deducted and only just managed to survive relegation at the end of the season even though we were unbeaten.

That's just one of MANY cases I experienced in my career, and it happened in cricket too because if a kid comes to trials and brings a birth certificate, what can you do as birth certificates don't have pics attached!!

but what if Shoes identified as a 16 year old

Given what was said on the Classics thread, that some cyclists are too good to be doing what they do without doping, here is a snapshot of one ride, from last century, with stage results omitted to keep it shorter. Brag points to the person who can identify the rider.

It's happened in the past, and is happening currently, and will most likely happen again in the future. Once in a generation rider capable of doing it all. It's enjoyable to see it, and doesn't mean they're doping. If they are, who cares... it's still good to watch.

I think the clean ones and spectators wanting clean sport actually care.

The reason why top-end sports are so appealing is because you get to witness incredible displays of strength, endurance, and other exceptional talents performed by athletes. However, if these athletes are achieving these feats through the use of performance-enhancing drugs, then it diminishes the value of their accomplishments.

If I were to lose my belief that these athletes are truly exceptional, then I would lose interest in watching them. While it is true that even with doping, it takes a great deal of hard work and talent to reach the top, I do not want to question the authenticity of their results. It is disheartening to think that someone could win simply because they out-doped their competition.

Did you buy your bike new or used?

If you bought new, you may have been the target market for something ... wider rims, boost, etc.

If you bought second hand you managed to skip the premium for a new bike, and bought a bike from someone who did buy a new bike. At some point you too will end up buying a great condition used bike with a UHD.

If I had an older bike that's not UDH compatible but wanted to upgrade to AXS 12 speed eagle, this new transmission is out of the question.

Assumption here is that current AXS 12 speed will be discontinued and once sold out they out.

I do like this advancement in tech and the 12 speed AXS is something i would be interested to upgrade to.

I am aware that there is will still be stock of older AXS and there is still a 2nd hand market but I am highlighting a valid scenario where this new tech is not available to you unless you upgrade your frame.

Under each one of those there's multiple models

udh is very common on any bike that's been made after 2020

this " just need to buy a new frame......"  line is already getting old

i think you would be surprised how many people ride bikes older than 2020....

but then again , if you riding an older bike you probably not the target market....

    They get tested and busted.

Do a search in Bikehub, their was a amateur that recieved a letter from the UCI with a fine in Swiss Franc.

    Ah i see

But even so, it seems to me that testing is either done to those finishing in top or near the top positions or if they are under suspicion.

Mid pack and back markers however, are they ever randomly tested?

i mean who would know if a mid/back pack rider was on any ban substances...

once again not condoning the use of ban substances. Just curious about whether this matters

  6. Im interested in understanding whether this will work well with

    1) Shimano Chain, Cassette and Cranks (55mm chain line)

    2) Bikes that do not have a 55mm chain line (is this adjustable?)

The other thing to consider if this tech gets trickled down to GX is that anyone who currently owns a non UDH or non 148 boost frame wont be able to get this new transmission system.

Shimano focusing on the peoples market with CUES and Sram focusing on the top end market with Eagle.

QUESTION FROM A "FIRST TIME" TEAM -

"What pain meds may they use?"

Kindly provide a link to some sort of site or list that can guide the newbies through this ...

EDIT - for those that have done the Epic ... is there a "race doctor" that could assist them ?

Getting a new appreciation for the fun this little maze can be for the amateurs ....

Just wondering if amateurs will even be tested and does it even matter if they are taking anything that's on the ban list as long as they not causing harm to themselves and others.

    Not condoning taking ban substances

What could possibly be more relaxing than riding your bike through new and exciting terrain for several days?

We love nothing more than a fresh (or old and iconic) stage race, so we've compiled a list of mountain bike stage races in South Africa and surrounds to help you plan your racing (holidays) in 2023.

Shoo, is this what stage racing has become.

is it frowned upon if i try to push myself

  9. cant see what the issue is for a shorter route.

Im guessing hubbers are not the target market for this and as mentioned by others, most other events have short route options.

Having a shorter option has no impact on you doing the full 109km so i dont understand the negativity behind it.

As far as I am concerned nothings changed that actually affects me and my race on the 109km route

I fell for the hype, I confess. I've never participated in OOT so I was curious.

The entry process was simple and payment easy and safe.

Thereafter radio silence till Thursday when I received an SMS with my race number and start batch.

Registration was on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. I opted for Saturday morning as I attended a prior commitment with WPMTB.

Saturday Morning parking at Coetzenberg was easy and efficient.

Registration, well this is where things go a bit pear shaped.

Collecting my number was quick and easy, I get this huge brown bag with a small sachet of bike cleaner, 25ml bottle of Squirt and a ladies Roll on.

    "where's the event cycling jersey?"

"oh its over there sir in that queue." ok so its not pre-packed with your race number. This probably means that they're throw a garment in the bag on a wat dit en loop basis.

During Entry I selected a my appropriate size for the garment style and brand, a Men's small. I get OFFERED a mens Large....

" I indicated a size small during entry, showing the staff member my entry invoice with garment sizes.

"We don't have any Mens Smalls left. we ran out yesterday because people who ordered a medium weren't happy and swapped out their ordered size for a more appropriate size."

Me:" That's not really my problem. I ordered a Small and now I have to take what I get while others received preferential treatment. Not very fair is it?"

worker says they'll go and check the stock room/truck.

Meanwhile a boytjie comes in and says he's there to collect his rider jersey. Worker checks his name and says that he already collected his top. Boytjie tjunes him "no I didn't".

Your name has been crossed out sir!"

" I didn't collect my top!" he exclaims, so the worker hands him another top.

By now someone else has noticed that I'm standing there for like 1omin already and asks if she can help. I explain the lack of availability of my garment size due to others receiving preferential treatment, She says I can sort you out with a ladies medium, its the same cut just a different size curve. " i reluctantly agree, thinking well at least my wife will have another cycling top. Turns out it fit ok so I agreed to accept it and be on my way.

On my way back to the car I pass Boytjie and his tjommie giggling about he just scored a second riding top after collecting one the day before.

Seem like pretty poor management from Stillwater Sports round the most expensive part of the goodie bag.

So then i line up, late for the front of A Batch due to the admin bungle but way ahead of the start time. I notice there's a lot of weeekend warriors in A batch and start making my way forward. Of course there's a the usual dom bru comments like "spot the racing snake pushing to the front bru!"

Well ya would you like the pushing to happen before or after the gun goes?

Then the gun does go and through the neutral zone the weekend warriors in the fron line up across the road blocking a whole group of snakes. When they get passed the inevitable stupid comments flows again. At this stage I thought it prudent to just keep following the slange so we get to the single track with peeps who can actually ride it. This was a good move as it pretty enjoyable to be riding the singletrack without having to be concerned queues.....or so I thought.

Somewhere they joined the short route onto the long ahead of a pristine section of single track. What a FU of note! dangerous and just irresponsible. Flying through some S-track I come across a group of ladies having a keckle about something. Of course they're standing on the s-track and around it so no one can pass. I rubber necked to see what was going on. Apparently one of them had fallen and scratched a knee. The blood hadn't reached the sock yet so I kept going, nothing to see there I thought.

Once it opened up it was fine but the courses joined 3 times and also into singletrack. Seriously....

Day2 they let the e-bikes go first, thankfully someone woke up in time to make this change. They said it wasn't a race but the start of day 2 took us straight up a steep little climb so clearly the weekend warrior s wanted to be in fornt again so they could show off their walking skills. you know the oh look at me look how I wiggle my hips next to my ,<insert favourite brand of poorly ridden bling machine> type of boytjie.

China's .....don't be so such, just start at the back and do your thang. let riders ride and walkers stay left = every body happy. Instead you complain when you get passed, have a snotty comment to offer when someone else rides past you and continues long after your lungs have pooped. its like Covid reset some okes to maximum Box mode. Shut up ride your bikes or go to the pub and drink. and stop making stupid comments to the ladies who ride better than you do. If' you're crap at riding an MTB then take up rugby or something. Some ladies are just better than you will ever be. Accept and appreciate. Buying an expensive bike doesn't give you credibility and your stupid comments just makes you a box.

Route marking was a pretty poor in places. On Saturday I missed two markers and had to back track, Not sure how many  I missed on Sunday.

But I didn't have a near miss with a boytjie in a his bakkie who simply ignored a marshall and missed me by the thickness of a polony skin. Not to mention trail runners who jumped out of bushes like jack-in-a-box.

The race village table didn't all have umbrella's, in Stellenbosch, in Summer..... Ya ok.. That was smart. The best part was the water table at the finish line.

Oh and the boytjies who didn't want to ride  hard but wanted to race the queue to get a finishers T.....priceless.

Overall I'd rate the trails as lekker. The event organisation gets a 1 star.  I can hear the flack building....."oh be grateful blah blah blah." If it was free I'd be grateful but I paid on time and in full so my expectations are aligned with what was promised.

I'm always happy to ride an event especially after Covid lock down threatened to kill everything. My wife's happy with her new riding jersey but that process left a lot to be desired. I won't be giving OOT another opportunity.

This was an interesting read and reaffirmed my decision not to enter.

The marketing of this event came across as a 2day social group ride and not a stage race.  Which is fine as long as organizers  clarify that its not a "race"

Not a roadie but after driving past the Boland 100 miler last week, there is just no way I would ever pay to ride on open pubic roads.

Didnt wana say it but Booland 100miler felt like the most unsafe race i ever did. Dont this road users were even aware that there was an event on. It felt like we just a bunch of riders getting together and deciding to ride 150km on public roads
