I wonder how the numbers were for red hill. Best race of the season if you ask me, it was so rad.

Agree, 99er without Visserhoek is already disappointing, now you cut half of the other climb it's just another PPA Fun ride, not the 99er.

Thats the problem, i didnt even know about this race until after i saw people post it on Strava. I would like to think i am clued up with some of the racing happening but I can tell you most casual roadies in the Cape only know about CTCT, DC and maybe Durbie Dash or the old Stellenbosch Cycle tour.

Marketing is a problem. WP cycling events are the worse offenders when it comes to marketing their events. Which also leads to this elitist mind set that "only those who know need to know". Like its some sort of elite underground club

I am open to anything that is fun. I'm keen to show my customer some Cape beauty.

We'll probably avoid the big rock garden/proper gap jump kinda stuff  (holidays that end in broken collar bones aren't fun).

Bike parks appeal because you don't need to do much navigating but please offer away - I'm happy for any and all info.

my suggestion would be split the Cape into 4 or 5 days

Day 1: Do Tokai and Silvermine (Noordhoek peaks - proper epic views) and then come down the single tracks like Donkey and the Snakes. If that is too easy then Mast is a sufferfest  but the beautiful scenery its worth it. You can then take Bridal path and finish off with Vasbyt on your way down.

Day 2: Around Table Mountain, string together Constantia nek to Newlands, Table Mountain, Camps Bay, 12 apostles trail and then into Hout Bay and come back up to the Nek. you can chuck in a few single track sections on Table Mountain, Lions Head and The Glen if you feeling for something more spicey. Once again this will really show off our City's beauty.

Day 3: Jonkershoek - just that. Ride everything you can and bring your climbing legs

Day 4: String together Plasir, Boschendal and Banhoek Conservancy. Among the best trails we have.

Day 5: Here i would decide either Helderberg, Wellington (Wild Boar trails), or Paarl trails. Alternatively if you can ride Elgin Grabouw that would be a win too.

Hope you guys have a blast whatever you decide

Nino Schurter has won  the world championship in men's cross-country 10 times so far.
    He also rides eBikes.

So one day when I am big and can afford it, I will swop out my Scott Spark 970 for one of these 👍

Nothing against ebikes but pretty sure whenever a sports celeb is punting any bike they pretty much told to do so by their sponsors.

Not much you can take from that. Hardly independent choice

    OT:

if you ride a basically 180mm, 20kg+ enduro e-bike.... please explain to me why you would feel the need to do so in 'XC' lycra?

Own the thing,  be comfortable. Your bike's weight and your cross section is already making your aero efficiency irrelevant. You cant be doing it for the drag coefficient benefits?  WHY then?

You know you get moisture wicking clothing that doesn't conform to every crevice? comfortable clothing?

Overweight MAMILS on ebikes. I dont get it.

PS: ZERO reference to @Mamil 😁

    comfort and back pockets?

  5. Hi and welcome

If you not planning on any trails and purely just doing road riding but want something thats "more than just restricted to smooth tarmac road" then consider a rigid commuter/gravel bike (flat or drop bar).

No suspension fork to service or maintain. With the right tires that's set up tubeless and you can still do dirt/gravel or B roads without worrying about punctures

dont know what your budget is but have a look at Rook Cycles the Scout model or the Hubs wide range of poducts https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/c/gravel-and-cyclocross-bikes

Im not going to tell you to buy gear because you sound like you would be comfortable in flip flops, flat pedals and a vest but please just get a decent helmet.

if later you decide you want to ride longer and further then start investing in kit and upgrades to the bike.

    Good luck and enjoy

    Dutch Cat 4 climbs 😂

By way of comparison, there's a segment in Cape Town over the N2 into Pinelands with double the elevation gain

    image.png.8820fba24a0c1efc7d45ce60cd319461.png

Something ive noticed in stage racing when it comes to classifying climbs. While climb difficulty does play a role in the classification. How much KOM points the organizers want to dish out also plays a role in deciding how to classify a climb.

Ive seen climbs get degraded or like in this case, elevated just so that the KOM points race can be heated up.

  7. If Roglic is moving i see him more as a replacement for G Thomas. Someone who can both TT and climb. Primoz is also very strong as a classics rider.

Dual leadership with Egan at the TDF?

Will Egan ever show us that 2019 TDF form again....

Of course, and I agree.  The word demonise has the notion of unfair criticism to it.  Nah, the Emirates and Israel (and a few others) have made their own bed with widespread and systematic human rights crimes.  Heck, it’s perfectly legal for Emirati men to physically assault their wives and daughters and to lock them away, as many court cases have also confirmed.  The intent of the discussion was about politics, more about whether bikehub citizens would work with such an employer.

FWIW, my original bit on another thread:

"I’ve admired the exploits and successes of TeamUAE and especially the exraordinary talent and effort of Pogačar.  It's sparked curiosity about whether anyone here would have reservations about doing work for/with a client or employer associated with widespread and serious human rights violations?

To qualify the question:  I stopped working with a major client, a multinational corporate, when they were bought out by Degussa.  That company is of course notorious for processing millions of jaws of those who died in German concentration camps in WW2, in order to extract gold from their teeth.  I started refusing to do business with any level of the SA state about 14 years ago when I realised it was becoming endemically corrupt.  I’m not virtue signalling, I’m outright stating that I won’t do business with the corrupt or criminal.

My ex SiL and her hubby are devout Christians but have no qualms about befriending the likes of the dodgy (traitorous, IMO) Zumas and Mbalulas and Gigabas, who'd occasionally turn up at family birthdays.  I’m outspoken and they were concerned about what I might say when those @R$3#0L3$ were present.  Where does one draw one’s proverbial line?  Would you have reservations about working for the likes of Qatar or UAE or Degussa?  Am interested so just asking…"

I also dropped Coca Cola SABCO as a client for the disgraceful way that they bankrupted the many distribution drivers  who had been set up as independent contractors.  Many family homes were lost.  The majority shareholder Gutsche’s daughter was a very good friend of mine, still refused to continue working with them.

Would you work for Israel Premier Tech?  Clearly not.  How about UAE Team Emirates?

I respect if you have a line drawn about who you would work for and who you wont. I too have a line that I will not cross (and yes IPT would be a hard no). I have refused to even consider working for specific sectors in the economy or certain companies that benefit very specific nations (not just Israel).

But it would be naïve to think our money is "clean". Some how in some way that same nation or company you refuse to business with is still some way involved in your life. China is another nation that i put on my "No" list but yet most things we need just to function in todays world is sourced from China.

As much as I agree that UAE as a nation has its own Human rights violations, there are nations that are and have done way worse.  UAE Team Emirate as a cycling team has also made steps to become more progressive...more progressive than perhaps another famous Belgium team (*cough Quickstep)

I guess its where you draw the line.

Wherever you draw it, you just got to make peace with it and accept it may not be perfect and not everyone will agree with it.

  9. Depending on your vantage point of the world, the environment and culture you grew up in or live in and the media you consume you can pretty much demonize any nation or corporate

@justinafrika while you have the right and freedom to demonize UAE, i too have the right to demonize IsraelPremierTech because of their associated Nation's human rights violations......

  10. I think the 105 Di2 is great for those wanting electronic shifting at a more " relative cheaper" price.

But I am wondering if this is end for any further R&D into mid to high tier mechanical groupsets (except for Campy).

If 11 speed mechanical is discontinued, anyone wanting something more than Tiagra might not be able to afford that big jump to 105 Di2.

This may be premature but on the face of it, this does seem like Shimano (and Sram) are basically not interested in the large middle market.

May seem frustrating now , but if this causes a gap in the market then I am sure someone else will see the opportunity and fill it.....

Dear trail builders, please remember as you repair, flatten, and make trails easier for the e-bike and gravel crew, thats there were those who supported and came and liked them the way they were. Also ok to add onto the trail to accomodate, not make them easier.

    Just a thought, with love.

as many has alluded to here, are we just not overbiking in most cases?

Iron Monkey also has MASSIVE features like a 20m gap throw and a couple of huge drops. Most people don't hit them.

The Jonkers trails also have step ups and more trail side features in general.

But I do agree that if you eliminate Plumber and Status, Jonkers and Tokai have a similar feel to them and in general are just fun to ride. Nothing to trouble the scorers with if you have decent skill.

I don't really regard them as 'gnar'

Stage 5 at Ezelenduro, the chute at Klipheuwel, some sections on Plumber and Status and some of the home made janky stuff on table mountain/devils peak is 'gnar'.

You mostly have to go out of your way to find it

Its always interesting to read other peoples perspective of what is technical and gnar. The rocky bit of Iron Monkey doesnt "feel" anymore technical or daunting compared to DH0 at Tokai and the rest of it feels like a flow trail - Although i did give that massive drop a pass 😁

As for Table Mountain, seems the only Gnar you find are those, as you said home made jank or hiking only trails that they send it on..... whether thats right or wrong (legal or morally) is another debate.

I think what OP and similar like minded people need to realize is that they are unfortunately the 1%.  Even if you were to convince the glorified gravel riders to invest in skills, many will never join that 1% because people are just built differently........ not everyone will be as technically gifted no matter how hard they try.

Nothing, but if he's bored of Tygerberg, Tokai will be much of the same..other than the Broken Road/Donkey trail and the DH line that is.

And the gnarlier stuff is outside of Tokai.

So every other trail besides Snakes and Vasbyt?

interesting perspective and each to his own but to me Tokai and most of Jonkers is pretty much the same when it comes to skill level required except Jonkers trails are like 3 to 5 times the length in distance which puts Jonkers in a class of its own.

Tokai is just short and that can become a bore overtime.

I do qualify this statement as I havent ridden Status and the Plumber yet.
