  1. now I know where my shoes disappeared to .....
  2. To be honest I think putting up signs may create some form of awareness but this will not prevent cyclists from being killed. The problem here is a general growing trend in South Africa where motorists don't give a damn about the law and do whatever they please. This is not going to improve until we get decent law enforcement in this country. For the mess we currently have you can blame our wonderful government who in my opinion are responsible for creating an environment of lawlessness. We are the unwilling beneficiaries of what they sowed prior to 1994 and have failed to subsequently address and bring under control
  3. nothing surprises me anymore. my boss got mugged right outside our building in the middle of joburg where we USED to work. the SAPS occupy the first 2 floors and there were 2 heavily armed policeman on duty outside at the doors not more than 3m away when the incident took place. the 2 policemen apparently saw nothing
  4. you should read the thread "joburg danger areas". i think the entire damn country is like the wild west
  5. 3 pages off bad and sad news ... must admit I dont feel safe cycling anywhere these days. Just what is it we need to do to simply be able to ride a bicycle down the road without being run over or attacked ?
  6. Yeah I suppose some people feel the need to pay a fortune to get the warm, fuzzy and loved feeling. I get my kicks on my bicycle and every now and then I get a group visit from these j. witness fellows you should see just how loved they feel when my beast hound sees them
  7. The only thing I ever hear is "cut the budget" "spend less". SARS finds ways of taking more every year, reduces allowable expenses. The government introduces new ways to squeeze us for more, tolls etc. Household domestic expenses and debit orders seem to jump significantly every January. Asking for an increase is like trying to ask for a flight to the moon. Service levels are not improving. Chuck in AA and a few other curve balls ... Nett result is a serious pain in my r...m and a huge amount of frustration The last damn thing I'm gonna do is spend less on cycling ! not after having to put with and manage the drivel above
  8. My concern is always for the newbie motorcyclists. They are firstly a danger to themselves, their fellow motorcyclists and finally the greater motoring community. These newbies seem to have large attitudes, no fear of death or injury and have little regard to the community at large. It usually requires an accident of some sort to sort out the above mentioned issues the only problem being sometimes these accidents are fatal or have other nasty consequences. This probably applies to newbie cyclists as well :)so do take care ...
  9. Buying a motorcycle is a good idea. I spend R240 - R300 a month on petrol but its risky business
  10. I get claustrophobic just thinking of wearing a buff kinda reminds me of my swim cap YUK
  11. TOPs Randpark Ridge
  12. Went riding yesterday avie and I must say there were a number of occasions were I wanted to use hand signals following some very close encounters. Its really hard not to get agro and fly off the handle so to speak. What amazes me are the speeds motorists do on their way home its absolutely ridiculous. What we need is better law ENFORCEMENT and more visibility instead of yogy bears hiding behind bushes trying to make up xmas bonuses.
  13. Forget Emmerentia. Try the Linden public pool lanes 5+ theres a current at each end of the pool that would make swimming in the ocean or a river look like a walk in the park. chuck in me and a few mates to create some wave action and Bobs yr uncle . Hey and if you really want to see some floaters and ecoli try the kiddies splash pool outside
  14. NOT me. Happy doing Olympic and 70.3 distances anything else is "madness" and I have not reached that level yet
  15. They only time I ever changed a chain was when upgrading from 7 to 9 and then 10 speed. I have never had a chain break and cant say I ever used "expensive" chains. So unless yr aiming for a podium finish and look like an Etheopian why spend unnecessary cash on an "expensive" chain just to loose a few grams ?
  16. I ride a motorcycle to work everyday. What I would like to do is attach a camera to my helmet and take a video to show all of what I see and am exposed to on a daily basis. You will be shocked. Motorcycling and cycling is a very risky business.
  17. If only I had a 1/10th of the budget
  18. Dude we could only dream about such luxuries .... is that pic for real ?
  19. I work for the largest beer manufacturer in the country. I am a stalwart when it comes to supporting the companies various "Dont drink and drive" and other alcohol awareness campaigns. Need I say anymore ?
  20. Last time I tried riding my bicycle in the yellow lane in Germany the town Mayor came to visit me that evening and kaked me out. Apparently I caused quite a stir amongst the town folk and they were most unhappy
  21. A few years ago I was climbing Krugersdorp hill on a Friday afternoon (a week before Argus). The cyclist behind me (+- 50m) was hit by a car and killed. The cops called me 2 weeks later to ask if I knew the guy and said no one had come forward to claim the body !!!!!! So folks please do cycle with ID and medical aid details on you ! Also dont cycle on Friday afternoons a lot of people go for a few beers after work in the afternoon's including myself
  22. In our deliberations lets also not forgot the poor guy who drowned recently at Midmar.
  23. I think the swim is a daunting affair for all newbies. I dont think wearing a wetsuit is going to make it any easier in the minds of the newbies. What they are really afraid of is the washing machine, the thrashing of legs and arms in the main pack, people swimming over you or someone kicking out your teeth. I do believe that staged starts are the answer here and NOT wetsuits. Limit starts to 100 to 200 a time according to some sort of seeding. Why do we always throw money at a problem first only then realizing that if we had thought the problem through carefully it could have been solved quite simply through better organization. This will do a lot to portray a different view of the swim to newbies and of course the rest of us. The swim and the race as a whole should be seen as highly organized and FUN. If I dont enjoy what I do I dont do it.
  24. Are you sure she wants you to change ? Maybe she likes you the way you are and that's why she's marrying you.
