  1. My 21km Soweto was pretty good. I've been battling shin issues for a little over a year now and have had inserts in my shoes and very slow build up to 10km runs over the last few weeks etc.

So, when I took my 8yr old for a Parkrun yesterday, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to "wiggle the legs" a bit. She thought running would be good and managed a 48min run. Very proud, but I came out feeling that I may have aggravated my shins a bit. So rubs 'n ice etc for the last 24hrs it was.

Today, I applied all manner of potions to my legs and hit the race with tender shins for the first 4km's, but kept a slow pace, hoping to make 2:30 with no injury. Halfway, I was on track, having 1:10 for 11km. But my feet were feeling a bit "off". Anyway, I was pacing in the right direction. Feet hurt like hell for 10km, but I finished, with more walking than planned, in 2:29.

Feet still killing me. So I buy the carb overload combination at the event and drive home to remove my shoes. Upon doing so, I have, on my right foot, a 5x2cm blister under the arch and a less dramatic 2x2cm one on my left. My shins BTW are awesome, so I'm still calling progress here, but what on earth is suddenly causing blisters when I've used the same shoes, same sock type (Falke L/R running socks)? Really miffed. (Shoes only have 430km on them after today)

A bitter/sweet run this. Managed a longer run for the first time in over a year without leg issues, but suddenly have gaping blisters on the under side of my feet. I didn't even get a single blister on my last two 42km Soweto runs. Any ideas here? For info purposes, my shoes did appear to be a little wetter than usual when getting home.

I'm lost for words, I'm pretty fit having dropped the smokes for the last few weeks, and have exercised well and for a bit too, now an issue that I've not experienced since 2011... WTF!

    Please, any advice would help...

  2. Good luck to them trying to pull a 1000 odd runners off the course...

My issue is, not so much that they could pull me off.

I wouldn't mind an official time, although it's not a must but my timing chip is registered for the 42km, would there be an issue with my time showing I've run a 2:10 marathon? How would this bode for my entry into other events if I'm thought to have cheated? Possibly a bit paranoid, but worth asking?

  3. Fenix 3 or 735XT.

Awesome deal(56% off) on the 920XT, can't go wrong with this either:

I've bought from these guys before and they're pretty jacked up.

On a side note, I've collected my Soweto Marathon race pack. I tried to arrange the downgrade to 21km, but was told no. The lady did say that I should just drop back and start with the 21km runners, but a marshal could possibly take me off the course if he was vigilant. Any ideas?

  4. I sincerely hope OM have got their **** together an this is not repeated. As a slow lumbering runner I need water and/or coke all the time. If they run out I will be in serious trouble.

First standalone marathon for me. Nervous as hell

Soweto was my first marathon, it's a great race, but very tough. I was given some advice leading up to the race that was invaluable.

Save yourself for the second half, there are a lot of tough uphills at the end and the first half is easier, making it easy to keep your pace high only to have little left in the tank (especially from around 30km onwards). It frustrated me on my first and I didn't heed the advice. It ended up biting me in the @ss in the end.

As for the liquids etc., take R200 or so with you. You'll run past a lot of little shops etc. where if need be, you can buy cokes etc. It'll also help when hitting the end, parking is quite a way from the start(although the start is in a different place this year), but you'll wanna buy beer and food once done and you won't wanna go back to the car to fetch cash.

Have fun, the people on this run are great.

  5. I have had both and to be honest, use my pool almost every day, except the really cold winter months.

Build it, those fibreglass pools are very difficult to get 100% right and if you don't you'll have loads of problems. Get a surface skimmer and a neutral floater with a kreepy and you'll do very little hands on maintenance at all.

I swim in summer, twice a day at least and in winter, maybe just a quick soak after heavy exercise. You'll k@k off with the winter thing, but it beats having to ice the legs after a long run...

  6. I hear soweto marathon is a great vibe....but with the mass of numbers they really need to get their act together. This is not 2 oceans where the 21 is in demand..let people downgrade. And then allow for number collection that is also stupid. Added to that, I heard last year the first two tables didnt even exist because the people just hightailed off with all the coke etc!

Never mind the first two tables, they ran out of water at 30km. Temperatures neared 35-40deg and they had no water for the last 25% of the race. They're full of shite, the vibe is incredible, that's why I'm so keen to do even the 21km.

  7. So Soweto Marathon...

No downgrading distance , no number collection on the day, no picking up other people's numbers. For a race that's historically never got it right - this is some serious high horse, illogical idiocy they are enforcing on their customers...

Never mind the inconvenience of the number collection/enforced marketing bollox to force two trips out to Soweto on clients, but not allowing distance downgrades is dangerous, stupid, illogical and will ultimately cause them more headaches than history would suggest they can handle... should be some fun and games come Sunday

I'm pissed about this no downgrade thing. I've been battling injury for the whole year and am now ready to run a 21km run. Not a 42km by a long shot. I am however, entered into the 42km run as I thought I'd be able to pull it off.

What would stop me from running the 21km with a 42km number? I really don't need an official time, but I'd like to do the event as it's been a target for me since entering and I'd be properly bummed to miss it.

As for the food, I try to go for a coke, closely followed by a beer and a burger where possible. Used to be a cigarette as well, but I'm proud to say that I've been clean for two weeks and I'm certain it'll stick this time. I've had zero cravings, so far.

  8. Hell talk about taking a trip down memory lane with this thread.

Spatz I remember well. Spent many Saturday and Friday night there.

    Late Night Dukes in Rosebank.

    Foxies in Rivonia.

What was the one in Randburg called "Chillers?"

Always remember going to Spatz to watch 909, they always used to open their set with that Simply Red song, "something Got me Started" I think. Then walking to Balalaika for some more fun. There was also that place over the road from Balalaika for a bit, forget what it was called.

  9. Jip no rewards showing for me today even thou met goal

Me neither, I use mine and my wife's at the gym, we've got a group going so we get two each when everyone hits their goal. I go to the gym three times a week, so it funds my after workout smoothie.

I saw on the website that they donated R250K to Endurocad, it says:

"Well done for contributing to our quarter million Rand donation to Endurocad!"

"For getting active last week, your fitness points have helped to support future Olympic athletes."

Seems we forfeited our smoothies and coffee for a good cause. I'm sure they told us, but having never read too much of their marketing garb, I probably missed it. If this is the case, I'm OK with that.

  10. I had a lengthy negotiation this week on an item I was selling. We couldn't agree on a price and in the interim, I received an offer for what I was prepared to accept. Only option was to give original "purchaser" first right of refusal.

He declined and so I moved forward with the higher offer. I have sold three items on the classifieds this week, two paid prior to shipping, one shipped today, the other for collection next week. The third paid upon delivery as it was delivered in person. There were one or two jokes about incurring "Hub Wrath" and one purchaser even said don't rush to send to Postent branch as he was only collecting end of next week.

For me, the sooner it's in transit, the better. Someone acts in good faith, the least I could do is return the favour. Hub honour is what makes the bulk of Hub transactions easy. What scares me, is that @Craig 26 above only has 10 posts and is already honourable. This is just counterintuitive

  11. I just took my Sapphire Titanium to Navworld due to a battery issue. It took less time to replace the unit, no questions asked, than it did to drive there. I live 10 mins away.

Which ever you go for, there may be occasional issues, but Garmin always backs up their gear.
