  1. My holiday project: Paint living room and make a live edge Silver Oak shelf to replace the funny little kassie we used to put the television on for the last 8 years... My dad planted the the tree some 35 years ago as part of a wind shield in his citrus orchards. Turned out that the shade of the large trees created bigger problems than wind and down they came. My boet had the foresight to take some of the wood to a sawmill and one plank made its way from the farm in Patensie to Stellies... I still need to source better brackets (will be hitting antique shops soon) and the make a plan with the freaking tv/dvd wires.
  2. light Cobb with 1 cup liquid in moat. Salt, pepper, paprika on brisket. When cobb ready put some soaked woodchips on coals - i sommer use green lemon twigs about as thick as a thumb - put on grillgrid and toasting rack, dome on , heat for a few minutes. Place brisket on rack, smoke to your liking. Depending on size i smoke for 1.5 - 2 hrs. Wrap meat in foil and bake till meat reaally tender. May need to add brickets.
  3. j7st love the Cobb. Can do so much with it. Pulled smoked brisket was awesome

  5. Marina...once upon a time a client of mine. Really good guys involved in that business back then, unfortunately I lost contact when moved from auditing
  6. A crazyguy is currently riding from CT to PE and blogging as he goes. He is not in a hurry (day 13 done and only in Hermanus), but it makes for interesting reading: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1mr&page_id=526390&v=1U I'm waiting to see what his route is from George: N2/Langkloof/Baviaanskloof
  7. Both work well - I do mostly freeform bread. After knockdown (before second rising). Seen a youtube vid where dough is formed, covered in bran. A heavy based pan is then pre-heated to as hot as possible (250C), olive added (as you would for frying an egg) and then the bran covered, risen dough into the pan and baked. Gives a very crusty bread.
  8. My fool proof bread recipe (I even use it as pizza dough): 4 cups cake/bread flour 2 cups tepid/warm water (adjust as needed) 4 teaspoons sugar 1 to 2 t salt 7g yeast mix dry ingredients, add water, mix/knead, place in lightly oiled mixing bowl, cover and let rise. after dough doubled in size, knock down, form to desired shape/rolls and let rise again. Bake in hot oven (200C - 220C), time dependant on bread thickness.
  9. Part of my commute as well: just on my way to work...
  10. +1
  11. That's why I love my convection microwave oven. Pre-heats really fast (5 min to 200) and ideal for smaller baked goods, e.g. baking 3 chicken strips for my 3 yr old daughter and 2 mini pizzas for the laaitie. And if you're in a hurry, combination baking/microwave a "roast" chicken in 30 min.
  12. then I should buy, lekker being a hobbit. What was the fat one's name again? Sam? Edit: grammer/grammar/granma?
  13. Our family was invited to a particular braai when I was 5 & my boet 3 yrs old. When it was dark already the oom my dad & I got in to the oom's bakkie to fetch the meat in his deepfreez in is mother's house. They also farmed at Patensie. Those were the days before microwave ovens. I dont think the oom told the tannie he invited people over for a braai. I also think that the oom was in diep k@k that night.
  14. From experience with friends and family I realised that gender is not clear cut. Whenever you comment regarding someone's gender, please stop and think: 1) the person did not have a choice - (s)he was born that way. 2) would my attitude towards that person change if (s)he was my child? i.e. would I still call him/her a thing?? Why don't someone who have displayed interest not rather start a topic on gender complexity to get a proper discussion going and keep this thread AWESOME?
  15. My brother & I once free camped in the Baviaanskloof on an unsupported bike ride - one day into the kloof, find sleeping spot, next day back. No rain was forecast and we decided against taking a tent. Woke the next morning with some very fresh, very big cat spoor within a meter of our sleeping spot.
  16. Upgrade: Make the straps conductive and build in a cattle prod...
  17. smoked some halepenos (all from same plant) & had same problem. Downed a beer after a particular nasty sob.
  18. Metric shocks with imperial weight increases?
  19. I'm married to a redhead - she's got four degrees (three of them cum laude), basically a redhead librarian. Don't know whether I'm bragging or pleading for help

  22. +1 on my sc 5010
  23. My DIY skills &experience are sorely lacking. To be honest, I did woodwork in std 4 & 5 way back in 1989. I then arranged to do music classes in those periods... Completed projects = ZERO. We bought an old house two years ago and have to make do with it as is - I need to buy bike parts - and therefore used the built in stove that came with the house. This thing was a POS in that only 2 of the 4 hotplates kind of worked, i.e. either the were off or ON. When I cooked supper a few weeks ago, one of these remaining plates gave in as well and stripped my moer - other than my mtb and drinking beer, cooking is my passion, something I really enjoy and is fairly good at, well at least better by comparison to riding my bike. Chucked out the old stove/unit, leaving me a gap of 83cm (try find an 80 cm gas/electric) and then I went at the built-in kitchen cupboard with a saw/grinder/hammer only to find that the previous owner didn't tile under the kitchen cupboards. So I had a fair bit to do, none of which I've done before: Tiling, using a freakin' grinder to cut tiles, MEASURING(!!!) and, generally, using powertools. Luckily my dad gave me a Makita cordless drill kit for Christmas... Well, I did everything (except the gas installation and electrical connection) myself, saved a bit of money in the process and learnt that I can (and actually like to) do these kind of things. Granted: mistakes were made, blood was bled and the kids' vocabulary upgraded to those of sailors. Still need to give the new cupboard door a second coat of paint, and other little odds and ends like making a hardwood countertop. Maybe getting ahead of myself now. Love my Lofra stove! Some progress pics:
