  1. All the tips the okes gave in the lead up was spot on, I was told wear a buff and it worked like a charm. I suffered from insomnia so had very little sleep. I was too ambitious and aimed for a sub 5, wasnt strong enough for that distance on an MTB, my longest before that was the long argus MTB challenge. I probably overcooked it at the start. At 80km I was on track for a sub 5 but after the refreshment stop my energy was gone, I pulled up on the left leg (first time I ever did that) and at 103km I pulled on the right leg. the last 25km for me was tough. I must say some okes are really strong, especially the old timers, I saw some of them flying. Oh and I fell in the thick sand, couldn't uncleat fast enough or maybe I just wanted to lay down a bit. Goodie bag not too shabby either Great race, lovely route, i know what to do now, cant wait for Tip Trans 2015.
  2. The problem I have is how to pace myself, never done this race before. The Argus I train for and no every hoekie en draaitjie. If I can follow a wheel that has similar ambitions then yeah, maybe i'm in with a shout. but I'm also weary of the last 10-20 km.
  3. I'm also planning on a sub 6
  4. guess you alone here, so you have to join the ladies racing snakes I'm sure there are others, they just no hubbers.
  5. i don't care about temp. if it is cold I dress warm, it is warm I ditch the warm clothes and take more water but I can't dress for wind
  6. I also had no issues with Bridge, only had good service from them. I stay in Lansdowne and if they were closer I would have used them more often, now I use Revolution Cycles, been getting great service from them. I do agree that there shop is too small for all the bikes they put in there, but doesn't bother me. I know of a store with all the space and well laid out floor but there bike range don't interest me. Then I prefer the hustle and bustle of Bridge
  7. stem bolts on my mtb only require 2nm, jip i think we overtighten in fear of it working loose
  8. the strange thing is, I'm in lansdowne so I fear riding from my home in the dark, so I put the bike in the car and hook up with my brother at Constantia Village because it is safer to only hear on the hub that they wanted to bike jack a guy on spaansemacht
  9. Debbie Stopforth at Trail & Tar done magic for me
  10. either way go for a sizing, you will need to take them for long rides, cos any discomfort wont necessarily be felt by going round the block
  11. I'm 1.68m, an extremely comfortable on my Spez 29er Medium. Before that i had a 26er Trail dual sus bike which was a small, was very comfortable on that one too. Its not only about height, in seam yes and in my case arm length. I got long arms like a baboon hence the top tubes of mediums can fit me. Go size yourself up at more than one place, just to be sure
  12. Cycling using the Buddy system will make it safe for you. During the week you will find other riders on the trails. A group of us met last week Wednesday at 6:15 and rode till 8am, we planning to do it this Wednesday again if weather permits
  13. I put my Strava on if I go to the shop. I commute daily and commuting by far makes up the majority of my KMs, of course I am tracking it. The trophies have dried up because of the same route but what pleasure one gets if you managed to collect a few every now and then. Every km counts towards good health, so make it count
  14. you did nothing wrong. In the Burger challenge I had navigate through traffic all day long. On all my passing moves I did not once ask someone to give way. I would just announce myself saying coming through the middle, left or right. Often that required some risk and taking the rougher line. So long as the guy in front knows you passing and holds their line, you who wishes to overtake have to put in the work.
  15. not to derail the thread. On the flipside, last week i done 300kms riding in the peninsula, during peak and off peak times. Up Constantia Nek, down lower Salt River Main Road, Chappies etc. At times it was congested as well. I must say the cars, trucks, taxis and buses were extremely courteous. I was given space. at times when there were cars parked on the side of the road. Cars tailed a group of us going up constantia nek because they wanted clear air to overtake, showing alot of patience. I was yielded to, given right of way several times. So yes there are idiots on the road but at the same time I also experience a load of courteous and patient drivers. Some even give a 'slight' hoot to make sure you know they are coming up behind you and going to overtake. I always go out of my way to thank those drivers by waving them and giving a thumbs up.
  16. Anytime start time cool with me. I'm available everyday of next week except Tuesday. so let me know
  17. we must sync next time. well I have 24 days to go so hopefully can put their hand up
  18. Hi I am in between jobs and am at home the whole of August. if there is anyone who wish to hook up for an early morning Tokai ride in the week please let me know. With all the spook stories I would prefer not to ride alone and I'm bang for baboons. I ride up to silvermine gate and down ST is what I have in mind. Up to the mast or right up the silvermine loop would be a boost.
  19. e-bikes will be cool for those that sukkel to climb, it is there issue if they don't want to get stronger, at least they get to enjoy the ST coming down, don't see the battery helping there, that will be all skill. The key is that for climbing, the speed must not be ridiculously fast where it poses a danger. anything to get more people on bikes. We need that.
  20. The Argus mtb has 2 days, everyone catered for i get to ride short route with the mrs the sat and longer route on my own the sunday
  21. Ok, based on this I'm going for a Sub 3 next year. will need to get into the top groups, lingering in PPA 'I' and did a 3:36 Argus this year.
  22. I done something similar and got to 120km. Enjoy! When does challenge end?
  23. Welldone! Lsd, continue with the diet and ride the bike. U do need to set a realistic goal and train for it. As the kilos drop ur speed will increase. And most of all, it should remain fun
