I've just got a 853 steel hard tail which is fantastic. I'm coming off a 160mm / 150mm dual and I love it. It's got a nice slack 64 degree head angle, is nicely long and rolls on 35mm, 29'r wheels and 2.8 tyres. I can honestly say it's a great bit of kit and does most of Tokai with ease (the top DH line next to Cobra aside). Pedals great up hill, comes down awesome. I'm not going to be a disciple for everyone running out and getting one but it's a lot of fun, super capable, you can pedal it around easily and I don't feel I'm losing too much. I hadn't realise how much my big travel bike had numbed out everything and made it pretty boring.

Last thing I'd say is that is for a steel HT. A very different beast to an alu' frame and with less refined geo. I'm yet to really find the limits of my steely's capabilities after going most of the TB, Tokai and Jonkers trails but I think I might have a very, very, different view on a lot of other alu' HTs that haven't been thought out.

Which one did you get? 😉

What about a Knolly Tyaughton frame? They are steel frames and on sale at the moment, with worldwide shipping available

That's a very interesting option. Thank you. I'll trawl through some reviews on it. Lovely specs at first glance though!

That scout is on sale at great price for BF at the moment. Never ridden one though. Had a Meta and really couldn't find that much fun about it. Was a very vanilla alu frame but alot of people love it. Having has a few steel HT's I'd struggle to go back to Alu. If you're spending coin, get something awesome.

I'd angle more towards looking for a Kingdom Vendetta (Ti), Banshee Paradox (alu), Cotic BFE Max, Bird Forge Steel, Hello Dave, Canfield Nimble Nine, Orange Crush, Stanton Swith9er frame set and just build up here. Much easier / cheaper to import and less duty if you go via Aramex Global Shopper. I've brought a frames in few in that way and by far the easiest, simplest, cheapest and pretty fast. Full bikes attract more attention, costs and duty.

I've seen a few great ones on Pink Bike going second hand and great deals but you've got to take leap of faith (so far bought 6 frames from Ebay and PB along the way and no issues what so ever) but with PB better to have a UK account to dump the coin into their account to make it less hassle for the seller and with Aramex you have a UK address for them to send to so easier to deal with and arrange courier to collect. People tend to freak out when you say 'I'm from South Africa...'. EBay / PayPal is a bit easier with buyer protection.

When it comes to Steely HT's there are alot of good options around but criminally few ever makes it to our shores unless you take a punt and do it yourself. Good luck, BF is almost here for new deals and post your purchase!

Thanks so much for the response. That's exactly what's holding me back from buying. I just can't get my head past the feel of my steel cotic.... I chatted to Wayne this morning about the Rapide Tigre but I'm just worried that I'm a touch taller than their max hight recommendation on their XL. Decisions decisions. I'm really having to force myself to be patient here!

  4. Sorry not sorry for raising the dead here. I need some advice. I'm pulling the trigger soon on a new HT monster. Current front runners are:

    - Nukeproof Scout 290 (Concern is CRC in business rescue, and crazy shipping / duty cost)

    - Commencal Meta HT AM Race (https://commencal-store.co.za/products/meta-ht-am-race)

I can't help but think I want something in steel through. I have a cotic simple SS which I really love riding. I just can't seem to find a good option here that comes as a full bike, with OEM pricing on components AND ships to SA.

I'm 1,98m tall, so I need an XL or XXL depending on the brand.... makes things that much harder to find.

Any thoughts / help on stores that serve our niche market would be appreciated.

  5. Rancilio question.

I just can't seem to get a good strong crema from my shots.

    - I'm using the Rocky grinder

    - Grinder is set to around number 3 or 4 for fine grind

    - Beans? Dark roast from Woolies

    - Machine is descaled with fresh shower screen and seals

    - Double basket used.

What colour should I get from the crema? Darker brown? Mine is more of a straw colour.

I sometimes get a sour draw but since I changed the settings on the grinder it got better.

The flow from the portafilter isn't thick or thin. More of a medium but the viscosity seems a little thin.

It's driving me insane that I can't get a full body cup of coffee from this (what I regard as expensive) machine.

I have the same machine, and get plenty of crema. But, it's probably less relevant than you think. This is a great video explaining what crema actually is:

Fresh beans make the biggest difference, and you probably want to brew a little hotter in the Sylvia than you think.

  6. All the best man.

I've basically just switched to carnivore, and everything is better. Like, everything. Stable weight, stronger, much more clear thinking, amazing bowel movements (Because it's the first thing people ask me), recovery off the charts, hardly get sick, mood is stable, .... I could go on.

My many many many hours of research and experimentation all point to one thing. Remove carbs. Don't bother adding fat. You can, without harm, but you don't need to.

okay, so - after what has been an utterly atrocious first 5 months of the year, culminating in a complete and utter failure to lose any more than 2kg since January, I've culled. Culled all the refined carbs in my house, stocked up on good oils (olive, avo & coconut) as well as cruciferous veg and good meat (steak & chicken)

From now, I'm going to be strictly following the "Keto-Gains" style version of LCHF, which is broadly described as low carb, adequate protein, adequate on fat. Fat intake depends on your goals - to lose, less fat. To gain, more fat.

Given that I need to lose, I'm limiting fat to the macros pumped out by their calculator, based on 20g carbs (net), sufficient protein @ 1g / lean lb bodyweight and fat for the rest. This results in 160g protein, 90g fat, 20g carbs.

This is a slight departure from the typical "therapeutic" keto that many groups propose, but I feel that they have the right mixture of results, evidence and know-how to back up their claims.

All tracking will be done via MFP, and I'll be making my own mayo, sauces and everything else, from scratch.

I realise that this is about the eleventy millionth time I've hit a "reboot", but I'm over it, and my divorce is almost complete. Just awaiting a court date.

Will check back in as I progress (hopefully)

  7. Good afternoon all.

So as a Xmas gift to the office our director got us a filter coffee machine which grinds its own beans.

I know this is not the best but the coffee brewed tastes loads better than than instant coffee!!

What beans do you suggest and where does one acquire such bean?

Get the delivered, fresh, every 2 weeks.

Here:  www.truth.co.za, or here: www.beanthere.co.za, or many others... but fresh they must be!

  8. And the difference(s)?

You're just making filter coffee (If I'm seeing what's in the picture correctly. Which is ok, but Aeropress and ABID make an immersion brewed coffee. You have control over time too. Aeropress is a little in it's own class of coffee because you also the press the coffee through a semi puck, which changes it again.

The clever dripper gives you time control, and then you filter through one it's brewed to perfection. It's really great. You have to try it.

  9. So I have to say. I own two aeropresses, and I really like the coffee. But, I got a clever Dripper a few months ago, and it's ALWAYS my first cup of coffee every morning. It's just such great balance of flavour for me. Going on holiday tomorrow, and very torn as to what to take with me. My hand grinder is packed. I'll probably take both. And a bodum. Maybe.

  10. Well . . . had a late night one last night. (see time stamp on post above)

    Shortening brake-lines, bleeding brakes, ext.

Still need to get the handle bar height sorted. Get it lower.

(Seems if I was a bit conservative with steering tube cutting)

BUT ready for the weekend . . . here she is!!

    (some quick pics the morning)

    That's a beauty.

  11. I've heard the Ardent 2.4s are much better but the 2.25s I have aren't nearly as good as the Spez Purgatory/Ground Control combo I replaced them with. Less grip, less braking, wash out in corners and slower rolling. Heavy. More expensive. Durable though.

I recently refitted the Ardents to my old bike and the 'downgrade' was immediately evident. Entered the 1st corner at normal Purgatory pace and washed out.....

This correct. 2.25's are OK at the back, but I don't love them in front. Also, that spez rubber is pretty nice to ride on. I just got too many unrepairable punctures on them.

  12. Good component spec. Your tyre choice is heavy and you could save 400g there quite easily at the expense of some reliability. My Spez rubber with control casings was more than 400g lighter than the 2.25 LUST Ardents it replaced and has lasted 18 months with no major issues except lots of sidewall weeping. Also the dropper costs you another 400g compared to a carbon post....but who would want to lose the dropper on that kind of bike. You could also save some weight on the cranks but at a price. Everything else is already quite light considering the bike's purpose.

I wouldn't have traded my Ardent 2.4's and dropper post on the epic for any weight saving.
