Thanks everybody for your contribution, I’ll text your Uber guy.

So also train from Simon’s Town is NOT recommended?

The train end in Simons Town and it's 10km from there to the gate of the reserve. Then from there it's another 12km to the point. As others have said. You do NOT want to use public transport in South Africa.

The red bus https://www.citysightseeing.co.za/en/cape-town is a nice way to see the city and down as far as Hout Bay. It doesn't go over chapmans peak or to the reserve.

I'd try to book an Uber or private shuttle. I assume you are staying in a hotel. If so they will be able to sort that out for you quite easily. If you can got to the point via Hout Bay and chapmans peak and head back to the city via Simons Town and Kalk Bay. They're both beautiful routes.

  2. Sorry for your experience OP. I've had a similar experience with a bus on Chappies and it's not pleasant.

Just as a general rule to avoid the tour busses you MUST clear the top of Chappies by 9. Work that timing backwards towards CT. The busses aren't allowed to head north on Chappies but you want to avoid the north bound side after 11 to miss the boy racers.

This is my conundrum, perhaps a mistake to look at any of them, but supported by a wife who loves bikes!

IMO if you look at the Duc in isolation it's utterly gorgeous. It's only because of it's older and younger sisters that it's considered not so pretty.

Of the 4 I'd be happy with the RC8 and 999. I'd struggle to choose between the 2 but knowing myself I'd be happier pulling my lid on for the 999.

*Edit. You still have the 1098 right? In that case the RC8. Oh and **** YOU!

  4. I've traveled extensively in SA and in Africa for work. Nigeria, Zim, Malawi, Ghana. My most recent trip was to Ghana for a month straight. Horrible. I've taken the following approach with various levels of success over the years.

I would attack this from 2 angles. What you put into your mouth and the fitness aspect.

    Eating

While it's not always possible, try to stay in a self catering accommodation so that you can provide your own meals. If you can set it up that you are shopping at a spar or whatever and cooking your own meals that will make a big difference

If you do have to stay in a hotel employ intermittent fasting. Those big bacony breakfasts are terrible for your waistline and even worse for your cholesterol.

One of my colleagues takes her own breakfast cereal and has that in her room so she's not tempted.

    Fitness

    Simple.

I'm assuming you have a smart watch. Go to a running store and get yourself a good pair of running shoes. Spend more than 2k. You can run anywhere and your running will ensure that you don't lose your cardiovascular fitness.

If you are staying in a hotel in Africa insist that the hotel has a treadmill. Most of them do. If not map out a route that you can run 5km. Cover the distance. The speed does not matter. Do that 3-4 times a week and you'll be golden.

If you are doing repeat trips to the same location try to stay in the same hotel (that has a treadmill) every time. The familiarity will make it easier to head to the hotel gym. Take your laptop/tablet down there, watch some vids and zone out on the treadmill. You'll be in a better mood and sleep better too.

From personal experience. Make sure the treadmill actually exists and that the pics of the gym aren't from 2007 when the hotel opened and now it's just a dark musty room with some weights and a gym mat.

    Things to AVOID

    The hotel bar

    Boozy lunches

    Bacon

3 massive meals a day simply because you are bored.

    (apart from  the neighbours)

My across the road neighbors have a generator. And they say it's the worst thing they ever did. It's loud for us. I can't imagine how terrible it must be for them.

  6. @ the op

There's a bit of a micro economy with shuttle days in the WC.

    There's the aforementioned Hellsend

There's also Avondale that seems to run shuttle days from time to time

I know Rene Damseaux was running shuttles out at helderberg. Some good stuff on that hill. It's been a while since I was out there but give the hanger bike co a call maybe he's still operating. I honestly don't know

Agree on Paarl - its a fun track and the easiest, smoothest  shuttle road you'll ever find. The Tokai option mentioned by Eddy is a long way around and won't give you heaps of runs due to the distances and traffic involved and isn't a great option on a full on DH bike due to the flattish pedaling needed to access the DH line.

Done the Tokai shuttle around a few times and always thought it was a poor ROI. It takes around 45 minutes to do the drive up, ride across and full run down. Do that with 4 other guys and that's a big time investment for around 20 minutes of riding.

Still way better than going to a mall or some such punishment tho.

Yes I am on a Morewood makulu 27.5 DH rig.
I am planning on entering the rest of the races this season, but was hoping to make a few buds before the races.

What tracks are open to privet shuttles?

Easiest if you are norman no mates is to go to Paarl. The Taal Monument. Get your bird to shuttle you. Bribe her with lunch afterwards. Tar shuttle road. Easy access. You can easily bang out 10 runs in 2 hours and maybe make a few mates as it's generally got a few guys doing the same thing.

Hellsend tends to have regular shuttle days. Like one a month average. NOT TO BE MISSED!! That is the closest thing to a Euro bike park you'll find in SA.

I am now using mywhoosh, that is completely free.

My IDT and tele that i use for it are literally gthering dust in the Garage. I'll probably haul it out for the winter but paying for a subscription is something I want to avoid if possible. What are your thoughts on mywoosh? Are you on Apple?

I tried to install it on my one pc and that proved to be way to technical for me so i threw in the towel.

There is that one barrel I got at Vicbay so many years ago. I scored it off Leanard Giles as he chose not to go. I can still hear the thunder of the lip and see the glass curtain dropping beside me as I weave the spit ball trying to dodge chandeliers. I got pinched on the exit, but that image is seared into my memory bank forever.

My folks used to live in J Bay. One time I went up there and it was absolutely going mental for days. I had one wave where I took off in front of Cheron's house and got tubed through Impossibles. (A very rare occurrence)

It was bonkers. I kicked out at Tubes and paddled into the very next wave and got absolutely thumped. I got out and told my girlfriend that I can stop surfing now coz I'll never get a wave like that ever again.

Fast forward 24 hours. I was standing at the gulley and Dave Lipschitz tells me to jump. So I jump. All 3 fins pulled out of the board. Wetsuit torn to pieces. Mother Nature gives in abundance but she takes too.

That’s the biggest smile I’ve seen on your dial ever, @Duane_Bosch Mooi, man. Surf’s up!

That's my I'm falling in love with this bit of foam and fibre face. It's literally a backyard hand shaped EPS that's glassed too thick. I've got a set of fins in there that I bought as a backup set incase my good fins break out. The tail shape isn't really in keeping with the design of the rest of the board. It's 42l which is VERY buoyant.

It really has no right being so good. The mate who I skollied it from did win US open champs on it tho so it does have pedigree. He let me use it while my small wave board was ben repaired.

I've even had it down the Dunes which is a big no no for this style of eps board. Once I'd nursed it through the bottom dropping out of the waves it was a good barrel rider too. It allows me to make something from nothing which I really love.

  12. Little snappies from yesterdays early morning session at Derdes. Loaner Board circa 2018. The lender doesn't know this yet but he's going to have to pry this out of my cold dead hands to get it back. Hands down the best groveler I've ever ridden.

  13. Some snappies from down the beach the other day.

I surfed a MUCH BIGGER day down there just before Xmas that was TRULY terrifying. Proper survival mode stuff. The one paddle out after getting washed to the beach took 40 minutes. You just have to paddle and try find a keyhole to get through when it's like that. I only got one noteworthy wave but what I saw will live with me forever.

More importantly, VERY good to see the price evolution ....

    Exactly.

This boy is something that catches my eye. Probably coz it's yellow.

I only ever use Zwift for workouts so the lack of gears doesn't bother me. My daughter does spinning classes at the local gym. So rather than get her a bike to go onto the smart trainer at home I might unload the trainer and get something like this.
