  1. Good afternoon Hubland

Looking for a group or starting a group if needs be, alternating between road and mtb rides in PTA (Monumentpark area) thinking of doing Groenkloof x2 per week (Monday and Friday perhaps) and then road on Wednesday (hoping for some input on routes here) and then alternating the road/mtb every week.

Anyone keen to join give me a shout on WA 081 008 6829

    Attached are some routes

There is a way better option for you than my original quote:

    • Come up with Solomon Mahlangu (Hans Strydom) past Waterkloof high school on your left
    • Turn right onto Delmas road (the next intersection after the Total garage).
    • Just keep straight until you hit the massive sink hole
    • Turn back

Think it will be around 60km round trip for you. If you want to increase the distance you can go through the sink hole and turn left at the four way stop. But more on that if 60km becomes too easy 😁

This road is closed to traffic due to the sink hole, it will be closed for quite a while still, I think it was estimated that it was going to take well over 18 months to fix.

I have attached some .gxp files and I have also accepted your request. I am actually a mtber so some of these routes may have some dirt sections (sorry about that).

    Checking the distance.gpx 120.83 kB · 4 downloads Dusting off those climbing legs - take 2.gpx 107.36 kB · 1 download Road journey.gpx 81.16 kB · 2 downloads Delmas road loop.gpx 74.2 kB · 3 downloads

Thanks a mil. Wil definitely do the Delmas route this weekend.

  3. Hi there Hubland

Recently moved to PTA from JHB, could anyone give me some guidance on safe(ish) routes for a road bike around the area, preferably wide emergency lanes, intersections that are reasonable to cross and decent distance. I know this is asking a lot, any guidance will be much appreciated.

  4. I have an explanation as to exactly why this is happening.

“As of 2021 there is no ruling Rain Queen, as the previous Rain Queen died on 12 June 2005. A new Rain Queen was expected to be crowned once she turned 18, but Prince Lekukela is now expected to become the first Rain King in more than 200 years in October 2022.“

Obviously this is leaving us as cyclists in a pretty messy predicament as precisely who to address the rain timing issue with.

According to my Strava feed, it looks like it is open.

Ha ha, no it really isn’t, and also the guards there have NO sense of humour. I eventually had to point out to them exactly what bad shape my companions were in, and that the added 30ks to Heidelberg side would kill them, asked him if he was keen to deal with the admin on that, he didn't seem to find it quite as funny as I did! Matter of fact, neither did the two of them!

Luckily for me this incident played out before any serious climbing or distance in the legs, or I might have been the dead one!

  6. Very little that has been said here is really rocket science, and I might have missed a couple of pages. Here is my take on this. I went from 145kg down to 111kg last year. What I am very surprised has not been mentioned here is the psychology of weight loss. Certain exclusion diets (I did it with a combination of keto and fasting) make it easier to avoid triggers to overeating.

The problem with seeing weight loss as simply a calorie deficit equation is this, many foods (especially foods that combine high amounts of fats with refined/processed carbohydrates i.e ice cream, pizza, crisps) trigger overeating behavior by short circuiting your brain's rewards system. This makes it highly unlike that given access to excess calories (which we all have) you won't overeat.

As soon as you take foods that have a drastic effect on blood sugar out of the equation, it becomes that much easier to control hunger and cravings. Just remember that dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar is what causes hunger/cravings.

Without trying to go to deep into the science and convolute what is meant to be a simple argument this is the reason why there is much anecdotal evidence of big weight loss on keto diets and why a lot of people swear by them.

I think early morning rides would suit a lot more riders than late evening rides

open to any suggestions, would just like to get some traction on the idea, maybe one in the morning (Wednesdays) and one in the evening (obviously Mondays) pretty sure if it takes off we can schedule more rides.

  8. Hi fellow Hubbers,

I wanted to put an idea out there and see how many people would potentially be interested, there are some pretty cool group rides on zwift where there is also a discord voice server that the group can join on and chat (think coffee ride style conversation).

I think it would be very cool if we can get a South Africa specific ride once, maybe twice a week, where like minded people have a virtual platform to meet up, ride and shoot the breeze. Thinking initially Monday and Wednesday evenings 19h30 for about an hour, anyone keen?

  9. Can't believe no one on here has mentioned Dylan Johnson, his stuff is science backed and simple as anything. He also calls both zwift and tr on a lot of their structured workouts.

Like several people have pointed out there is A LOT of good material out there that one can find with a bit of research.

  10. As far as indemnity in law goes, you can not indemnify yourself (natural person or juristic person) from gross negligence, is this gross negligence from the organiser’s side? Bikehub jury go! (I lean towards common sense should prevail, it is the rider’s responsibility to be vigilant on the road)
