Looking for some recommendations on an Espresso machine. Budget 20-25k.

Had a look at the Rancilio PID and the Lelit Mara, the Lelit looks much better on paper, but willing to consider other options.

I went with a MaraX, good balance of performance vs. price. Disadvantage is that it does not look as flash as a Rocket, for example, but there are upgrades available for the Mara, like wood handles and a flow control paddle.

Standard MaraX beats the Rancilio on looks imo.

    Comparison recently done here:

  2. Does your wife have a Huawei phone? I know that they tend to give issues with the DQ.

But something else you can try to get to the bottom of the issue: Drive her car with your phone and see if it logs the trip. Normally its a single profile with multiple devices so its links via the main members ID number.

If your phone works in her car without any issue then you know its her phone giving problems.

Nah, I suspect the issue is on their software. Reason me saying so is that I have a tracking unit installed which works 100% as I can pull all the stats from CTrack. However, every month like clockwork I get the error message “No tracking unit installed” on Disco’s page, triggering another email exchange with Disco support

Ja it's not cellphone based - we have the trackers installed. And I know they're working because the correct stats get pulled through and the other day when she aquaplaned on the way to work in the torrential rain they called her immediately and knew her position etc. It's just somehow not pulling through to the webpage dashboard and monthly reporting.

  3. ai, so frustrating! I even said in my first e-mail to them that the DQ tracker is pulling the data correctly to DQ Mapper, but somehow the data on their end (website etc) isn't correct - and then the helpline guy e-mails back saying I must setup an appointment to install and activate a DQ tracker before any data will show. No sense sometimes...  :cursing:

    You aren’t the only one.

I have an issue with my DQ tracker showing some drives and not showing others (mostly the ones to and back from work. They say my drives are showing on their side, but it’s not showing on the app. They say my wife’s unit isn’t working but her car hasn’t been used much. The more I tell them what’s happening/not happening, the more they say things are fine.

It’s currently sitting with my broker, as I don’t have the time nor patience to argue with a call centre agent.

  4. Hoping one of you can help (not Discovery Vitality related, but Discovery Insure) - for the last 2 months the Disco website hasn't been pulling through my wife's driving stats (which affects the overall score and cash back etc) saying she doesn't have a DQ Track installed, despite this being done in Feb/March of this year. I've double checked and the issue is on the website and not the DQ Tracker, which I can see is correctly tracking her trips on the DQ Mapper site I can access. After I complained last month Disco manually allocated a score to her but it's happening again... anyone else had this issue?

  5. Anyone with gpx or Strava links to gravel rides in the Sir Lowry's/Schapenberg/Lourensford/Hottentots Dome bowl area....public open free to ride gravel/jeep tracks......??

I don’t think there is much, but the Wannabes trail from Somerset to Stellies is doable on a Gravel Bike.

I've been in Somerset West for half of lockdown and ridden the Wannabees trail quite a bit and kept thinking you could have good fun on there with a gravel bike!

  6. Thanks, would definitely keep it in mind.

What is your opinion on the Scott Centric Plus helmet?

I bought one of these from Bike Addict towards the end of last year at a great price and have loved it - using it on both my road and MTB. Very comfortable, provides good protection and airflow, has MIPS so ticks that box for you as well. I can't comment on on the crash test as yet (touch wood), but its solid enough. So zero complaints from my end!

  7. in peak hours when riding a bike between obz and woodstock i use this route if you want to avoid the  most madness of Albert and/or Victoria road. i live in the area.

relatively safe....and some 'sightseeing' along the way.

Nothing like being a tourist in your own city, I'll be sure to give those sightseeing spots a check ;)

  8. Currently have a very short cycle from my home to work in Obs but needed to go drop something off in Woodstock awhile back and decided to give the main road back a try - absolute chaos dodging taxis, busses, pedestrians and random cars parked in the road   definitely not ideal in peak traffic!

Thanks for the info Mamil

Liesbeeck and then onto the cycle lane is the easiest. The Woodstock / salt river cycle lane is a special experience and requires wits about you particularly in peak hours. From there straight on or onto the cycle path at Lower Church street - it is a relatively safer stretch of that path than others have proven to be but I always ride it with a wary eye open.

Going the other way is a tougher ride, a bit hillier but easier in terms of traffic and criminals I think.

These qualifiers in place - it is very doable - I don't commute but both routes are part of my regular training rides.

  9. Hi all,

I’m moving to Rondebosch in the coming months and was planning on cycling into town for work as I’ll be based in the CBD/foreshore area.

The way I see it, I'll likely use the road/cycling path along Liesbeek Parkway then onto the cycle lane and into town most days, but would love to hop over the mountain some days via Rhodes Mem, then Vredehoek and into town.

Are there any groups who commute along this route? Ideally would prefer to ride with some others because, you know, safety.

    Thanks in advance :)
  10. Howzit all,

I’m moving to Rondebosch in the coming months and was planning on cycling into town for work as I’ll be based in the foreshore area - any suggested routes or areas to watch out for? The way I see it’s basically over the mountain, along Woodstock main rd, or along Liesbeek then onto the cycle lane.

  11. Anyone else still waiting for their official result?

    E-mailed RaceTec... Ghost ship

Also still waiting on my results - nothing on Racetec, no SMS or anything... 2 people I rode with both received their results (with the 1 also dropping back like me to ride with the 3rd person).

Sent in a query to CTCT and Racetec but no response as yet.

  12. Would this only be for frames or whole bikes?

no duties on frames or bioke components. Just VAT and ATV which means VAT is charged on value of items +10% so VAT effectively increases to 16.5% from 15%.

Then you'll have shipping and whatever the courier charges for dealing with the customs clearance side of things which in SkyNet's case is, I think, R 250.

  13. OK, makes sense then. I could ride everything with flats although I did have to put my foot out on some of those switchbacks.

Haha, it's not the cleats, I'm actually pretty good with cleats. I'm just really generally unskilled and super risk averse .

Don't think it's a cleats vs flats thing - I ride cleats (would love to give flats a go though) and never had any issues with the course. I saw way too many people struggle on every downhill switchback we came across... like @Aquaratza said, think it's mostly down to being 'unskilled' as a result of never having ridden on those types of surfaces.

  14. Did the 60km with my old man - views were incredible, organisation was quality, and the dip in the river at 50km was pure bliss! Still, I don't think either of us will be back again. Neither of us are particularly fit at the moment (fractured ankle towards end of 2019 for me and constant travel for work for my dad) so took some strain doing the distance in the heat.

But the many, many walkers, super sandy and dusty sections, lack of fun, flowing single track, and the numerous boxes who (if they even had the decency to announce themselves) would shout to pass and bully people out the way even when there's no point in doing so, are what put me off. I'm by all measures a fairly average rider, and I really didn't think it was a technical race - the switchbacks weren't too sharp, descents weren't too fast, and no technical single track that I can recall.

The only times I had to walk was when someone on an e-bike caused a bunch of us to stop when he decided to climb off his bike in front of us just as a short, steep uphill started (and then proceeded to tell us all not to push our bikes past him because he wanted to ride), and again near the end of that very long sandy section of the road. Otherwise it was all very manageable (even that section with the cliff drop-off; but I can totally understand people opting to walk - rather safe than sorry if you're not comfortable!).

For the XC boys I can imagine it would have been lots of fun, so fair game! But wasn't my cup of tea - different strokes for different folks. Still had a blast being out there on such a beautiful day though. All the best to those riding CTCT this weekend.

  15. Just entered and it will be my first my first triathalon.

Im a failry decent runner, did a marathon last year, and can do argus in 3h20

The swim is my weakness, im a strong swimmer but not fast.

My main concern is the swim.  Is open water swimming really that much tougher than the pool?

My goal is to fiinish. i dont want to crawl over the line but i also dont need to race.  So i need a good training programme for the above goals.

I have 15 weeks to get fit.

    Any advice for a noob.

Don't stress too much! I did Durban 70.3 last year which was my first proper triathlon (only every done a few Xterra's over the years) and with very little training I found it more than manageable!

I certainly didn't shoot the lights out, but was quite stoked with my time of 6h30. For someone who's a terrible swimmer, hardly trained and who had never done an open-water swim before, I found I much preferred the sea to swimming in a dam as you can actually see underwater. Agree with Shaper above, sighting is crucial otherwise you end up swimming a few additional metres. My furthest training ride was 70km and found the ride very flat and fun. Despite having done a few proper trail runs over the year leading up to June, having not trained on the road at all other than a 30km run in Jan, the pain of running on the road was the only thing which got to me and was the main cause in me not coming in at 6hrs.

But take the above with a pinch of salt :) As we had incredible weather last year with a very calm sea for the swim and no wind on the ride or run (other than a slight breeze to keep you cool).

  16. Taking awhile to get used to the new site, but then again I've never been big on change! Do like the overall feel and UX, as it feels a bit more 'modernized'. But here's my 2c as well:

    • are Hubbers still able to comment on adverts? I always felt this was a great way to receive feedback on price, advert quality, etc but haven't seen any way on the current adverts.
    • personally, and I realise you've stated that you're still tweaking with the homepage design, I would prefer the articles & news being placed at the top of the webpage and adverts below that as opposed to the current format.
    • on the mobile site especially it feels too heavily advert/market place orientated.
    • it's a bit more cumbersome to drill down to what you're searching for on the market place, but I like the overall UX and the ability to see user reviews below their adverts.
    • I've been having various issues when opening images from adverts (where the alignment is off or where only a portion of the image is actually showing).

    Otherwise, great work all!

  17. I’ve been going to see a physio at the Sports Centre over the past month or 2 and was actually quite surprised at the amount of security by the lower parking lot. When I asked my physio she mentioned there’s not only been numerous car break ins over the past few months but also actual theft of cars from that lower parking lot and a few muggings. Definitely stay vigilant if heading that way.

  18. 1) Incorrect. The Credit Card does come with a transactional and saving account linked to it.

    2) If you are already on Gym Booster pre-October 2019 then nothing should change, except that your cash back must be paid into a Discovery account, in the form of Discovery Miles. You should still get the "up to 100% saving with gym booster".

    attachicon.gifCapture.JPG

As to (2), my gym fee is deducted from my other (non-Disco) bank account and I receive my full discount upfront on it.

I'm at VA Collection so max discount was 50% before Disco Bank. Just wondering if I can push that to 75% with the extra 25% offering or whether VA Collection is capped.

  19. ... I could be wrong, as this is al relatively new to me, and information is painful to find. I dislike the idea of having to do everything on the phone app.

    ...

This ^^^ so true. Wish they had an actual website built for Disco Bank as well. Like pulling teeth trying to find out full details on products that don't contradict one another.
