  1. I was on the road 6h12

    Notable sequence I picked up:

Cyclists seemed to be the first ones out. Followed by the runners, about 30min later. Lastly the walkers came out after the sun showed up.

I'm guessing the roads are insanely busy right now with everyone else and their dogs going for a walk.

Rough guesstimate that about 60% of people wore masks. Markedly, all the black people wore masks, only the whiteys went maskless. That's just my suburb, but still fascinating.

Still much safer than a supermarket visit in my mind.

Yeah, my area also saw majority with masks but the funny thing was most of those not wearing them where the old people. [emoji23]
  2. So the full Gazetted text regarding exercise reads:

    16. (2) a person may only leave their place of residence to-

    SNIP

(f)walk, run or cycle between the hours of 06H00 to 09H00, within a five kilometer radius of their place of residence: Provided that this is not done in organised groups.

My take on that: it is reasonable for a family of 4 to go out for a walk, if everyone adheres to the face mask restriction and maintains a proper distance from the other families also out for a walk.

Or would you gals and guys say that it is an organised group? We hardly walk two blocks, so won't get anywhere near the 5km radius limit.

I feel that family should not classify as an organised group as let's be realistic, inside or outside, if one of you gets it, odds are the rest are hours behind you. There is only so much socially distancing u can do in the same house
  3. Because I / some people work during that time. I am happy with the radius, the curfews just doesnt make sense? Condense people, but during lets say a 8 hour gap you spread people, and the risk of spreading the virus is less? You are now going to pass 3-4 times more fellow joggers/cyclers than normal?

Yeah but let's be honest, we are all either going to go out early morning or late evening anyway. I am. Not gonna wait till like 1 in the afternoon to go for a ride or a run.

So weather the law forces us to go in the morning or not, most of us will end up going out in the morning anyway.

  4. Oh and the difference between 35 & 31.8 is night and day ...... or so I have been told [emoji848]

This is what i have in green and 20mm rise, bloody awesome .

I have both, could not tell you the difference. I have the 35mm on now, had the 31.8 before, have a 31.8 on my spark it also had the 35 for some time.

Given I am the guy who can barely ride 30km on an alu bar on jeep track, if there where a difference between 35 and 31.8 I'd probably have felt it.

I know vibracore did a massive document about their product and comparisons between the 2 sizes as well as against carbon and they went with the 31.8 as it offered better dampening. The larger size reduced the efficacy of their fancy dampening insert. From what I recall though is in carbon the dampening effect is increased in the wider size.

I guess that means if you going carbon and have the option bigger is better, other than that I think it really is a much of a muchness.

  5. Sorry for the hijack. Anybody know where one can buy a 30/35mm rise carbon bar?

Not in South Africa, I looked before buying the vibracore, only 30mm riser carbon bar that was 780mm I could find was made by box and it was like 170gbp before shipping and customs, so prolly like 4 grand by the time it reaches your door.

I use it for the numb hands, so the vribacore worked just as well and that was about 1.8

  6. I also went from a spark to a Genius.

Genius came with a 50mm stem with, and off the bat I replaced the bar literally without even trying it as I cannot ride Alu bars, they make my hands go numb.

Bike shop suggested I get a 30mm rise on top of 30mm of spacers, in the end that was too much, but I got the Spank vibro core 800mm.

As a bar it was great, it felt great when I was ridding, but I dropped it a bit and it was better and for testing I took the Lyne carbon bar off the spark.

How I am ridding now and am quite happy with, needs some more ridding once we can as I have a longer fork now too.

    20mm spacers

780mm lyne carbon bar 15mm rise

    45mm lyne carbon stem.

When all this madness is over I'll put the spank back with the spacers on top but need it cut to 780 first.

While 800 felt good and did not feel wrong in anyway when I rode it as that's how I rode the bike from day 1, 780 is def better. Then I will run the 40mm stem.

You def right, it is very, very much a personal preference thing, I am lucky to have spars to play with as I have bought them over the years through the bikes. I rode my spark with 20mm rise and that lyne bar and stem combo.

If at all possible see what you can lend from friends as it really is an ideal try before you buy setup.

How I ended up switching back was grabbing the mechanics bike to test the fork before I bought it and his cockpit was very similar to what I hat and just like 20m of ridding I was like no, this feels better and went home and redid my cockpit.

  7. This is clear as mud?

Draft document says "People can excercise under strict public health conditions, subject to directions, which will exclude organised activities, recreational facilities and gym"

    And then the journo's take:

You can excercise alone, but you cannot jog? Or is jogging something that is considered to be a group activity?

I'm really hoping this means I can go cycle on my own....

The jurno also said you can jog from level 3. I saw no disconnect from that and the draft.

While generally done alone, it like cycling is just as much a group activity.

It also states no recreational movement, running and cycling are both sport and recreation.

  8. Here is some updated info and the article has attached the current draft proposal.

    https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/level-4-lockdown-you-can-exercise-alone-and-no-visiting-friends-and-family-47190025

As the article states, jogging only from level 3, stands to reasons Cycling will be then at the earliest.

Travel is restricted to work only, no recreational travel.

    Mandatory use of clothe masks.

Stores are to have temperature scanning in addition to the sanitizers and implement a system to control entry other than queuing, like a ticketing system.

    Curfews from 8pm to 5am.

  9. Evobikes has stock, AND they DO deliver the masks even during the lock-down -

    https://www.evobikes.co.za/catalogsearch/result/?q=face+masks+%E2%80%93+3+pack

there are a few other options out there, even some slightly cheaper ....

BUT, right now I will rather support our own companies/distributors.

We purchased these for our family, and can confirm the sizes are spot on. It fits VERY easily, without having to cover your eyes first ....

Today at the pharmacy people had to put on a mask before being allowed in !! Those that did not have masks, were given the option to buy a mask, or leave the shop. FIRST shop where ALL staff were actually wearing their masks properly. [emoji106] THIS is the new reality. Prudent business owners are already ordering masks for all their staff, especially those in the construction industry .... no mask : no entry to the site !!

Thanks, may actually grab a pack of that, but yeah it was just a random add I saw for masks specifically designed for cycling, I assume they would work well when ur panting.

I can't even ride with a single layer buff on my face, I can't breathe through them.

  10. Important to note that the government regulations are not about protecting individuals from infection but are addressed at public health. That is, they are attempting to reduce the speed with which the virus moves through the population with a view to protecting public infrastructure and limiting loss of life because of overwhelmed systems.

From this public health perspective, the risk you outline in your post, which is a real one is offset by the benefit to the population as a whole of being allowed to exercise.

I agree and understand the benefits of the exercise, my point was purely against the statement of you not having to wear a mask as u alone.

I think many of us are adapting, I had my cabin fever back in week 2 and I was a cranky irritable ass all week, instead of just an ass. At thins point however even if I can't ride outside, I'd even be happy to go sit in the damned office just to get out.

  11. You dont need a mask as protection when running alone. You can use a buff to please the Karens.

That's not what was said and makes no sense, you may be running alone, but what about the other 10 people running alone and the people walking along or walking their dogs alone.

At some point in time in the same neighbourhood these peeps are going to intersect, if 1 of them is sick and asymptomatic depending on paths of cross intersection that 1 sick person could infect a dozen households because they were all alone and all did not need to wear masks as they were alone...

Leaving alone does not mean you will be the only one outside assuming we're allowed such freedoms.

Inside your house is basically the only place ur not required to wear one.
