  1. got this email from graeme street - basically trying to sell his programs, but there is some truth to his comments - especially for us living in ZA: "Is off-season training really necessary if you live in a warm climate all year? You bet it is! Keep reading if you think an off-season plan of fitness and technique isn't necessary. I've gotten several dozen emails over the past few weeks about the topic of off-season training and cyclists that live in temperate climates that have 'good' weather most or all of the year. They argue that they have no off-season. I would agree if I were a weather man, but in this case I have to disagree as off-season style training can be the gateway to future success! The term off-season DOES NOT mean that the temperatures are -10 degrees out and the wind is howling. Yes, for many of us this may be the case, but the true application of off-season training is: 'A period of decreased training (6-12 weeks) intensity and volume in order to accelerate the recovery, strength, efficiency, and fitness of the body through the use of weak point training and technique driven drills and workouts to promote future gains in performance.' Simply put, the off-season is a time to work on the 'little things' like your pedaling technique, leg speed, positioning, core strength, flexibility, nutrition, and mental state that many of us don't do as we're out repeating the same training formula again and again. The off-season is not 'easy training', but rather FOCUSED training! In my mind the off-season represents the greatest opportunity to work on the things that need working on and NOT just hammering yourself on the same rides you've been doing year after year! So, I say to you, re-think your perception of the 'off-season' and if you live in a warm climate, great! But warm weather does not mean an off-season of focused training is not necessary! You just have the advantage of working on the little things out in the sun rather than inside on a trainer. Very jealous! I've met too many cyclists that are in the warm weather = performance training ALL THE TIME thinking! This will lead to decreases in fitness, a lack of motivation and a potential for injury. Trust me, I've been there when I lived in Florida for five years. No off-season training...No results!"
  2. here's hoping for a chunky-free day!!!!!
  3. yep admin - could we please have a forum called DOPING? this way we do not have to wade through the massive amount of doping threads. perhaps 2 new threads - DOPING & "HE WHOSE NAME I DARE NOT MENTION"
  4. ...don?t really want to get into the TCS guys oiling their squeaky bits! http://www.heart-health-for-life.com/coenzyme-q10.html http://www.icqa.org/ICQA/HomePage.html
  5. same here i follow a perfect diet, have a bf% of between 10-12% and still have high cholesterol. watch out for the statins - they cause nasty cramps & fatigue as ewep says. at one stage I could hardly climb a flight of stairs without extreme muscle pain. i was on Lipitor for a long time (about 4 years) & switched to Lovacol - no more cramps & muscle fatigue. i think that the Lovacol is a newer drug than the Lipitor. tried the natural / herbal stuff but no luck - if it is in your genes there is nothing you can do about it. i also supplement with Q10 - statin drugs deplete this enzyme to close to nothing in your body & your heart really needs to it function optimally - especially if you exercise. O ja - best to take these meds (too scared to say drugs 'cause I don?t want to end up on Carte Blanche!!!) with your evening meal. take the Q10 twice a day with breakfast & supper.
  6. what is the difference between the cradle classic route & the cresta wheelers one next sunday? looked @ both maps and still cant make out gat or stert of where is what.
  7. nice report - seems that i missed out on a nice week-end of racing!
  8. mmmm - cherry's AM Classics are looking more & more attractive
  9. What is the general sentiment here? <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I know that the tubby wheels are lighter than the clinchers, but is the weight saving worth the hassle? Are tubulars a hassle at all? How about puncture resistance? I am sure that the heavy ones do have puncture protection in them, but it will defeat the point of buying light rims & then loading them with some heavy tires. What about repairs? Do you just throw the tubby away once the broken zamalek has taken it?s toll? (I am talking about road use here) And the safety aspect for those of us who do not have a pro mechanic in the kitchen cupboard to glue these things on?
  10. take a very old frame with you & wrap it in newspaper. explain that you are going to get it re-painted. Dr. Seuss2006-09-21 04:49:04
  11. dont start with the doping stuff again! i still think that CSC is still the cleanest of the bunch. riis does not take crap and even said that in the case of baso being cleared he might not take him back as he would be tainted goods. perhaps the guys can start their training camp with the 94.7? i wonder of mrs. dr.seuss will be keen on a dec vacation in CT...
  12. had to make use of the sweep car once - was actually a flatbed truck and it managed to pick up a good amount of people with bikes everywhere! this one followed the very last person in the race, so i waited a good amount of time for them to arrive. the other bad side to it was that they then follow the race and we only arrived at the end 5.5 hours later! then again this is way better than walking or being stranded in no-mans land constantly watching over your shoulder. to have guys in quads follow the race with tubes etc. is a great idea - just like Mavic in the TDF. Perhaps we can even get them to carry water / energy drinks. dont some of the club vito's follow the race and help stranded clubmembers?
  13. yipeeeeee! they are using the EPR! if it was not for that i would have had to start with the ou tannies in ZZ! i figured it might be very difficult to convince mrs. dr.seuss to allow me leave dullstroom early on sunday morning to do the cradle promosing to return by no later than 15:00 the same day (all for the love of the sport of course!)
  14. not so sure how miss dr. seuss will handle this firing and cycling business!
  15. and again no TV coverage apart from the "outtakes" we get to see on supercycling. live.cyclingews.com is going to get me fired for all the bandwidth usage! GO SASTRE! was nice to watch the GIRO live on RAI - just a pity about the italian soundtrack!
  16. snapshot -> talking about this scott: http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/2006/shows/eurobike06/?id=results/eurobike064
  17. looking for something like this for my 720i
  18. some of you might remember that Star100 - started at Nasrec if memory serves and followed the route on the outskirts of JHB anti-clockwise. you hit krugersdorp hill after about 70km - no fun at all! i remember that even at that time the spectators were braaing on the side of the road (no topless girls though - the Scope still used stars...).
  19. http://www.analyticcycling.com - lots of simulations etc. to be run
  20. I heard that you can take the sensor to Polar & they will make it work just fine.
  21. dunno what sounds more gay - the comment about the ass or the comment about the floor?
  22. Golden rule ? when wearing tight lycra only focus on the wheel in front of you and at all costs avoid looking at anything that could cause an embarrassment!<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
