So yesterday on my commute home I learnt that some peeps really do get uptight if tuck into their slipstream.

Here I was commuting on my 29er with thick fat knobly tyres.  Along comes some dude who passes me with his yellow Pinarello.  And I reckon yippee, some slip to help pull me home quicker.  Now I should mention at this point that in the three years here in Germany I have never had an issue with having someone sitting in my slip or me sometimes using someone others' slip.

So it was only a few seconds that it took for Mr Canary Pinarello to realise he got a passanger.  Like someone stuck an electric rod up his @ss he dropped a few gears and hammered down the pedals.  I though yipee we are going to go fast today so I followed suit and still had a comfortable slip.  Now at this point I think he really got p!ssed, propably the sound of the fat 29er tyres overwhelming his thoughts or something but he pretty much soiled himself and started bitching at me.  I just told him that life is too short to live with an attitude like that.  Never thought someone could react like that if you sit in their slip.  He should also practice smiling again and I then proceeded to drop him and went home.

Classic. I like slipstreaming time trial bikes on my commute from Glencairn to Muizenberg. Preferably while wearing jeans shorts, takkies, shirtless and a backpack. Okes don't say a word when you pass them with a "Good morning."

Why so serious?

Howsit fellow commuter brethren. Have any of you commuted with one of these?

Does it impact your breathing at all?

Can't say as I never tried such a thing before.  Just once did a fitness assesment with a special mask and thought I was going to die.  My mouth aint big enough to let enough air through to the lungs as it is. Will not try and inhibit it in anyway.

Where would you need such a thing? On my normal commute the air is so fresh and clean wearing a mask would inhibit the absolute joy of being fewer than one to two hundred metres from the ocean.

Was that a brag? Yes it was...

However there are a couple of times a year when one of those would be quite useful at protecting the face from buzzing airborne protein.

But I'm with Mr B1 on this, any restriction of airflow would be a big negative.

Where I am at the moment I've seen a few people wearing the surgical type masks while riding. Although nothing like the unit in your link.

They seem to be OK.

First official commute today to work.

My commute is only 7km from my house to the workplace, but I do a detour back home adding 20km. I would like to increase it 30km as soon as I receive my front light again because it is getting dark early.

My starting time is not bad at all. I need to be at work by 08:45, which skips all of the major traffic. My shift ends 16:00/16:30 depending on how busy the day was, but I leave the office 15 minutes later due to changing in my cycling clothes/packing away/getting the bike down the stairs.

I ride with my semi-formal clothes to work because it is not that far and bring along my cycling kit for after work.

Today I left in peak traffic from Stikland Industrial and must say it was quite satisfying passing all the cars stuck in traffic. The backpack also makes the ride interesting, I can definitely feel it on the climbs and when I am out of the saddle.

Okay, so I only commuted one day so far, but I enjoyed it! Now that I got a work, I need to find time for my cycling, and the only way is to extend my route back home each day to get in some miles. The weekend is there for the lekka long ride (100km+) and then I am sorted.

Anyways, kudos to all the hardcore commuters out there and be safe!

Congrats and welcome to the awesome club and although we are almost halfway through the year don't forget to join the commuter challange.  You can set yourself a base to work on for next year.

I will not even consider riding in work clothes even on a very short commute.  But that is because I sweat like a race horse especially in summer here where it can get very humid (like this morning).   Last year on one summers day I had to do a quick commute to the SA Embassy here in Munich.  It was 32 degrees.  I cycle in my "work clothes" at I was properly soaked after the 4 km very easy commute.
