We are going on about nutrition on the bike, gu, 32 gi and coke. Could be that you just went where your body is not used to going. You mentioned it was your first 70km race. We can can use as much of whatever we want to, when you take your body to new levels it can rebel against it. I bet your next one will be much better. Anyway, just my opinion

Agreed TNT1. Test a few combinations and you will get to an eating and drinking regime that works for YOU and then stick to it. All these replies will get you there !

hi guys for the pace i was riding i would of finished around the 3 hr mark and because of my bonk i finished just under four hours, the last couple of kms felt like eternity, and the loose sand at the end nearly killed me.i do eat alot of pasta the week before the race, funny thing is when i got home i climbed on the scale to see if i lost weight, and i actually put on a kilo, maybe water retention not sure , it was hot out there

My guess is that your eating and drinking routine is fine, you just found that your first 70km is that little bit harder than what your body is ready for. Try to throw in a few 80km training rides and you will be ready for the next marathon

JB and TNT are absolutely correct.

The body needs energy and liquids to work. Any energy, any liquids. However, the body needs to metabolise whatever rubbish/food ext you shove into your mouth.

To do this it needs TIME and electrolytes (salts).

On a hot day like we had this weekend, you sweat a lot which is electrolytes and water. A big problem with many energy drinks is that they do not have sufficient electolytes included, so in the end your gut has too much liquid and sugars and too little electolytes and you over hydrate or, in cases where you have sweated a lot, bonk on a full stomach. THen you have to rest, wait for the body to catch up and continue.

One solution is to carry a rehydrate or similar product on you to mix,

another is to train on water and solid (real foods), in this way your body will get more efficient.

Finally, train in hot weather and take note of the effects of heat on your body and counter it in training.

I don't have a real answer as I also have nutrition issues. But a friend of mine, good ex runner rides on coke and water. When I asked about this , he said that Alan Robb had won four comrades on Coke and water.Darren Lill SA road champ also rides on coke and water.

I wanted to try a 70km race ive done quite well in the 40 s, and you only know if you can once you try.

just glad i finished , I was also trying to pace myself, maybe if i hadnt paced myself i would of bonked earlier

I forgot my banana in the car and I knew my juice was not gonna be enough, when I got to the 40km water point I smashed 4 cups of coke and then hammered it to the end waiting for the inevitable collapse. It never came and I felt sweet (pun) at the end. So I'd say it wasn't the coke but rather one of 3 things: You didn't drink enough coke at the last water point, your prerace nutrition was *** or lack of 70km racing was a factor. Or not.... i dunno...

I recently went for a ride, and climbing up Rigel avenue I bonked badly. I also use 32gi (took a while for my body to get used to it, but it's awesome now), and had water and everything. Was also early in the ride (about 15km in).

Turns out, the breakfast I skipped that morning made it happen. I pushed on to the next garage woollies, had a sandwich, and a powerade, and I was fine again. Seems food plays a more important role than we think it does.

Well done, thats the way to do it. Jump in the deep end and swim. Your next long one will be a walk in the park, then you can go for an even longer distance.

Hi all i did the diamond rush marathon at cullinan this weekend, it was my first 70km.

can someone tell me where i went wrong.

I carbo loaded two days before saturday with 32 gi, had future life for breakfast with no sugar ,a bottle a 32 gi on my bike and water in my pack,at every watering hole except for the last one i had a glass of 32 gi.

at the last watering hole there was about 11 kms left i decided to have a glass of coke,it wasnt 20 minutes,i lost all my energy ran out of water and almost felt like dying.

I did not finish well at all, was it the coke?

forgot to mention i also had 32 gi chews on me which i too every 30 mins, they did not help me at the end.

thanx for your feed back

lol, probably all that 32Gi - try something else.

Endurashake to load before and pre race meal with pronutro, and perhaps Whasp or Gu drink / Gels. On long mtb rides I carry cooked baby potatoes for half way and 3/4 into the race. nothing works better than natural starch.

keep it real.
