Number 2 is one of the most critical players on the team. When playing in school my best mate was the hooker and I played lock. We would go to the park after every practice and practice line jumps on our own. There was not a school that could touch us in line jumps and very little that could take us in a scrum. Marks needs to pull his sock up.

In spite of what happened before the final whistle, we should have walked all over them. The boks are looking good, but they need iron out some creases.

4 line-out misses in the red zone

So many missed opportunities.

C'mon Bokkies.

You snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

Funny I read the second last line as "C'mon Bakkies".  Bakkies may have moered a few Bokkies in the changerooms; even if he'd been sent off for a no arms tackle.

Don't think so, but he is the shortest of the front men (usually), so makes sense.

except on saturday when he was have such an off day. Get someone else to throw. same as when the kicker is having an off day, usually there is someone else to take over

not sure how much of this is edited, but these retired hookers are pretty much on the button.

is it written in the rules that the hooker has to throw?

nope anyone can throw in.

you just need someone as a scrummie off the lineout, the rest have to be 10m back.

edit:this has already been edited back

That’s impressive, retired or not.

I know they are throwing at a similar height and position, so it’s repetitive throw-ins, bit to hit such a small target each time is impressive.

John Smit was a superlative player and captain; (maybe stayed on a year too long) but I remember he had an overthrow on a defensive lineout that was gleefully snaffled by the AB's for a win. Then just a few weeks ago the AB's did it and the Boks won. It happens but should only happen once; after that throw to 2 (or just take the 3 points). Dumb play, dumb coaching.

I know there's a lot going on into lineout calls and decisions at this level, and they all study a lot. Most teams even have a lock dedicated to this job, and it's taken seriously. It's not as simple as it looks to joe public.

BUT for the life of me, when you're 5m out and clearly going for the driving maul, it's hardly ever contested, so why throw it so high?

Do you see a pattern?

The games this year involving the Bokke have been close, with stupid errors being part of the problem. The exception was the RC match in Argentina - they just seemed out of it. If the Bokke can learn from all these mistakes, there’s no reason why they can’t win the RWC and keep the 12 year cycle going.

Very optimistic frosty... we showed a few signs of improvement from last few seasons however we really still lack the killer instinct of any sorts.

Both games against the Mossies and last wknd against the poms are games we should've killed off. That game in Argentina we were just dominated.

Boks still have some way to go before they can consider themselves real contenders next year in Japan.

At least we are improving... So let's see how the next 3 games go.

We weren't even close to the best in the world a year out from the world cups we won, yet we pulled it off together when we needed to during the tournaments.

I feel we have the squad to do it again, so quietly optimistic.

Our opening game against NZ is going to be a classic, but at least not a make-or-break game.

I’m more optimistic now than before - the team seems to have a vision/direction and style of play that can go all the way. Rather make the mistakes now and learn from them than do it in the RWC.

1995 was pure hope. Our first RWC, and at home.

That first game under Jake White (think it in Bloem), was Os du Randt’s “out of retirement” comeback. They won convincingly that day but also won games they could easily have lost and lost games from a winning position too. In 2007 RWC, they had a tough/bruising route to the final, while fate played out nicely on the other side of the draw... that pop pass from France against the ABs that was supposedly forward.

Win or lose to the ABs in the group stage means we only see them again in the final, just like the Poms in 2007. Only 7 games in the RWC, but they only need to win games 2-7 to lift the trophy.

Let’s hope I feel the same this time next year... 5 days after the Bokke lift the William Webb Ellis trophy again.
