This is bad. I just cannot understand why it is so difficult to put the empty packet back into your pocket where it came from. I saw so many guys at the Argus just throwing their packets on the street without even giving it a second thought. :cursing:

I honestly and sincerely think the reason why the empty packet is littered is because of the mess the empty packet makes, like others mentioned above. Imagine you have two energy gels in your pocket, after using the first one and storing it the second one will be a royal mess with sticky gel all over your hands. Or storing the discarded gel in the wrong pocket and it leaks all over your mobile phone etc.

Take away all of the negative aspects of storing the empty packet and then the incentive not to litter will be greater. Problem solved!

I would also like to know, JB where has the info come from ? How official is this ?

I was told some years back that the management of the place has always hated the cyclists, so if true, it's been a long time coming.

This is very bad news . For the past eight weeks I've done the route on Wednesdays. Almost alone , just about no traffic. It's quiet, the scenery is amazing . For me this is road cycling heaven on earth.

I've stopped and picked up GU ,Powerbar and other wrappers on the route as well as in the car park. But I have also noticed bottles and stuff that were not dropped by cyclists.

I also agree that our gate money must make quite a large portion of their takings.

Something tells me that litter is not the only reason and that if you were to dig deeper you would find the staff do not like having cyclists around . That thing called cyclists attitude .RIGHT OR WRONG I'M NOT BLAMING ANYBODY.The litter is a red herring. It's a problem in all parks.

Can we do something about it ?

Is possible to get a delegation to go see their management?

Can we try and clean up ?I will get friends together and do it if it will help our cause .

I think it's serious enough for Gauteng cycling to get involved

I admire your faith in people's good nature.

I've seen people throw whole trash bags out of cars while still driving - I really think littering / not taking trash home is just a bad habit learned at an early age for those that do it. If you remove one source of something for them to litter, they'll still drop something else anyway .... it's a mindset.

I throw my gu on the floor to look like a pro... makes me hate my life less.

Actually I don't. I just put it in my pocket after I've finished it. Empty it out with the rest of my post race c*ap and throw my kit in the washing machine.

It's not fricking rocket science you got 3 pockets, just put it in the one without your phone.

Shame getting your hands messy doing something you want to, that gets 3 animals killed in their own house, htfu eat the packet or stick it up your a$$... GZ..phone might get sticky..... think its spade time..!

EDit ;not blaming you just hate that type of _ weak train of thought_....

I don't think its just the mess it makes. I see power bar packets, energy bar packets, chips etc also being littered. Its a mindset problem. The same people probably also throw their rubbish out of their car window.

IMHO this has nothing to do with how the contents are carried or packaged, these type of people will do it regardless :(

At the start of my group at the Argus on Sunday the announcer asked everybody nicely not to litter their GU containers along the route. First guy I see taking his shot flips it over his shoulder onto the road. Some people shouldn't be allowed outside ..

And they pleaded for people not to do it on the road to Smits. I saw a baboon with an energy sachet and another one with an empty energy bar packet. Stupid idiots throwing there stuff. The poor guys were having a really hard time keeping the baboons off the road.

It's because the pesky cyclists get in the way and bounce of the bonnets when staff don't obey their own one-way rule.

Um. how do we know that SBR is even being closed to cyclists and that this story is true?

Agree that people / cyclists shouldn't litter but maybe we're all getting worked up for nothing!

The Saint posted soemthing similar many moons ago, but there was some substance to it. I think he was in contact with management at the time, if my recollection is correct.
