A spot in Kalk Bay. They had ristretto on their menu, so I figured they had a clue

I hope you sent it back... and refused to pay for it.....

Few restaurants can do even vaguely ok coffee... they have no clue in general.... and their volumes will be really low, so beans will be for sure stale - if they weren't already stale when they bought them.

Maybe not a lack in quality but consistency?

I bought 250g Kenyan beans from the Dullstroom store when the MTN race was there in Feb. Long story short, I enjoyed it and bought 1kg on my way back from MTN Sabie.

The second purchase was a far darker roast than the first (oily texture when the first was dry), it didn't taste nearly the same nor have the same amount of crema once extracted. So I assume that it wasn't fresh either.

I had a batch from them that gave me a vicious headache virtually every time I used it, not the best flavor either, in the bin it went.

Wasn't impressed with the way they had the beans all out in the open in baskets, the guy helping me was dipping his hand into the beans playing with them while he was talking to me...

Good point,I had to send my coffee back twice in the week at another spot in fact, staff had no idea! What boggles my mind is that restuarants don't focus on their coffee more. If a spot has a rep for good coffee, people will frequent that spot for the coffee alone. This place is on the main road - with tons of cyclicts passing by.

Just need some quick advice.

I can get an oscar or a single group commercial WEGA machine for the same money.

Which would you take?

Wega - if you can deal with the plumbing and power requirements..

Rant on

Guests (or my mother) trying to tell me how I should make coffee get me riled up. Every time. Or people that ask for a "gewone koffie". Dafuq is that!? They can bring their own instant next time!

Rant off.

Please pour the milk in first with the flat teaspoon of Frisco? :whistling:

Don't forget the few granules of salt to really "enhance" the "coffee" flavour. ;)

That's a new one, salt in coffee, may be true tho as salt is used in many foods to clarify and reinforce the flavour?

But ja I find it deeply troubling when someone chooses Nescoffee that's like engine cleaner for your stomach over freshly brewed real grounds!

Only coffee shop in Kalk Bay that truly has a clue is Our Espresso Bar behind Artvark Art Gallery. You should hear the barista rage when someone sends the coffee back because its "too cold"!!!

When the coffee is shocking. Like when I'm driving long distance for a shoot and stop off some where odd and just have to have coffee before I kill myself. Then I frequently add a pinch of salt. It does help.

Love their Beans and Retro setup!

Personal preference but I find Deluxe Coffee Works and The Coffee Company to be more in line with my tastes.

But that is what I love about Cape Town in that we are spoiled for choice with quality coffee

my sister came over on holiday from the uk and got me this little puppy for my birthday. Specifically asked her to get me one. Its a spong no 1 vintage grinder which grinds more than enough for me quite quickly and painlessly. Grinds from a VERY fine to a VERY coarse...just need to play around with the adjustment. The grind is also very consistent. usually its just me for coffee but also ground enough for the 6 of us while on holiday and it took no more than a few minutes. Very chuffed..as is the wife to have something ornamental in her house
