my sister came over on holiday from the uk and got me this little puppy for my birthday. Specifically asked her to get me one. Its a spong no 1 vintage grinder which grinds more than enough for me quite quickly and painlessly. Grinds from a VERY fine to a VERY coarse...just need to play around with the adjustment. The grind is also very consistent. usually its just me for coffee but also ground enough for the 6 of us while on holiday and it took no more than a few minutes. Very chuffed..as is the wife to have something ornamental in her house

I love mine and nothing beats this. I love the sound it makes and the smell of freshly grinded beans.

I'm off to Cape Town this weekend, which shops are worth the visit? Much appreciated.

So lets say I buy a programmable grinder? An expobar. Will the doses need to change if I change beans or can i get the same amount (in grams) regardless of the beans or grind setting?

They will be close, but you will have to adjust the timer a bit when you change beans (and even grind settings) - kind of a black art.... easier to weigh the beans and single dose, even if it's a few seconds longer.

Alternately grinders do exist with scales - Baratza make them (Maelkonig in SA) - the Vario-W

So I'm thinking of buying a super auto for the girlfriend to keep at her house. Not a nespresso.

Any suggestions guys? I'd be willing to spend like 4k.

Small grinder and an Aeropress? or a mokka pot.... should fit easily inside your budget - decent super auto probably won't fit by half.

Not drinking coffee during the epic.... That's just crazy.

There was some done, but I am an espresso man, and the incumbent supplier does not do espresso well enough.. aside from the riding taking up valuable coffee drinking time.... :)

Oh well - it will wind back up to my normal 6 - 8 doubles a day soon enough...

I missed all these posts but I did land up at all these places coincidentally. :)

I tried a few places (espressos); Rosetta, Origin, Truth, EspressoLab and some others along the way (Haas and Knead in Muizenberg.)

Rosetta was my favourite with their El Zapote bean, I also enjoyed the rather different Knot Yirgacheffe bean which was very intriguing with its Earl Grey-like scent. Second was EspressoLab. My taste has now shifted to the lighter "fruitier" roasts.

Truth and Origin weren't bad (Truth the better of the two) but not quite to my liking. Although I did enjoy the single origin aeropress at Origin.

The Honest chocolate was also pretty good, especially that chocolate coconut ganache that they make.

Looks cool. - I guess trying it out will be the biggest test.

V12 probably knows the most about commercial machines.

Don't know about the most.... but I just ordered one for our new offices... A 2 group La Marzocco Linea - with plent of help from 101SCC in sourcing and pricing - and I KNOW I got a great deal.

Still have not decided on grinders yet... leaning towards a Mazzer Kony Electronic....

For the record - I suggested to Wayne that he buy a good commercial grade super automatic - this will probably work better for him in that he does not need to have a "real" barista to drive it.

What he actually plans to do, I don't know... yet ....:)
