A quick opinion for a not-so-purist coffee lover:

I'm looking to get a bean to mug machine that I can turn beans into a decent cappuccino at the press of a button (also on a fair budget)

Looking at the Delonghi ESAM4500 (R8200) vs the Saeco 3100 (R5700).

Any opinions or alternatives would be appreciated.

We have the same Delonghi at work. First machine died because some clever sales chap added water through the ground coffee entrance port....  I know right...

The identical replacement lasted about 5 years, then needed a new "frother valve". R1000 later from a local repair shop and she is up and running again!

For day-day coffee at work, it's not bad. Even the overseas visitors don't mind the espresso or "Cortado" we make for them! Better and instant any day!

Think it's a good buy!

So if it makes the coffee first and then the froth you get the same thing

Yeah, it doesn't work that way on the Delonghi unfortunately. It has a single button to do the entire process, and the milk is always first.

I have the exact same Delonghi. It makes amazing coffee, but don't bother with those style of attached frother units, they make really terrible froth and a huge mess. They also do the froth first and then the coffee, which means you get a whole bunch of froth at the top and all the coffee at the bottom. They are a huge mission to clean too. Just terrible...

I use a Bialetti Tutto Crema to make the froth. Perfect everytime, and really low tech.

I highly recommend the Bean There coffee beans. You will need to play with the timing and the grind to get what you like, so be patient. Once it's setup, there is really no easier way to make a perfect cup of coffee in just a few minutes.

if you press the cappuccino button twice it froths the milk only, allowing you make the coffee first.

try and buy a Jura. i owned the exact delonghi and donated it to my in-laws after a few months. Coffee was not to bad, jura is just better IMO

Ended up getting one of these.

Dionwired did a great price-match deal for me (was painless compared to the stories I've heard)

For the froth, I figured I need to learn to use the wand properly, else I'll get an external milk frother.

At least it's separate, so if it breaks it doesn't put my whole machine out.

Thanks for the advice. Even if I didn't quite follow it.

(looked for a jura, they're just out my budget)

Also purchased mine at Dion Wired...keep the invoice safe in the box in case you may need it. There was a no hassle exchange with the first one.

Enjoy!

Will measure up as soon as I can get close to the basket ???? - crazy busy weekend - play chess comp today and tomorrow and racing tomorrow.

me too

Right chaps, had a gap this weekend and machined up 2 tampers. Both are still at 59dia waiting for final machining details. The straight edge height is currently 10mm (Will increase slightly once I finish the diameter. Can also be adjusted by machining some material off of desired. Brass ring is solid with a diameter of 25mm. Looking at supplying 3 rings per unit so that handle height can be adjusted to suit your hand, Effectively allowing for 15mm of adjustment. Handle is Tamboti and hasn't been treated yet. Will be done with Danish oil if I can get my hands on some.

Over all diameter of the handle is around 35mm and it fits nicely into your hands with your fingers just putting pressure of the base to stabilize it while tamping.

Current options are 304 Stainless steel and T6 series aluminium.

Stainless:

Would the preference be stainless or aluminium?

Price point will initially be around the R500 mark as an introductory offer.

No problem. Do you need a specific diameter for the base?

So let me measure mine tonight i did get a 58mm but I don't think it's quite 58mm and using the Oscar i can see it's a not a perfect fit...

Others with/or had Oscars what tamper sizes were you okes using

Those are awesome Grebel. Do you turn the metal bits yourself?

Not all of them. The blanks for the bases I have machined. On my small lathe it takes too long. They are supplied at 59mm and I will then machine down to what ever sizes is required and finish them off. The whole idea is to machine to the customer's requirements. The brass spacers and the handles however I do myself.

Very nice, Its handy to be able to custom tune and finish the sizes to spec. That really adds a very nice twist that you cant get with off the shelf products.

Thanks RB. Yeah, that was kind of the idea behind this project. Also to be able to sell something that you can't really get anywhere else.

HI Grebel, Beautiful, I'm definitely interested, stainless, and I'll give you a dimension for my VST baskets. Regards, Ken
