This is unbelievable, I wonder if the driver even had a licence?

Johannesburg - More than 30 people were on Friday killed in South Africa when a train ploughed into a truck carrying dozens of farm workers on a railway line, an official said.

"What we know at this stage is that more than 30 people appear to have died at the point of impact," said Thulani Sibuyi, head of eastern Mpumalanga province's community safety department.

Victims had been "torn into pieces" and parademics were still on the scene near Malelane, east of the provincial capital Nelspruit, he said.

"It would appear as if the truck driver may have crossed the railway line without having a proper look-out and as a result the train hit him and then pulled him for about a kilometre to two kilometres," said Sibuyi.

"The bodies are lying all over the scene, people torn apart and so forth."

The exact numbers of dead and the many injured who had been taken to hospital still needed to be confirmed, he said.

The truck was transporting about 50 people to farms, he said.

According to some of the commentators on that site, it's the farmers' fault for having to transport people on the back of a truck. One even suggests apartheid as a scapegoat.

Firsly RIP to all the deceased. Condolences to the families.

This country has become a free for all do what you like paradise.

Traffic Lights are just there to be pretty, you dont respect them.

Stop street means give gas.

120 speed limit means you can travel at any speed as long as it is faster that 120kmph.

I saw a statistic the other day of how many drivers do not have licences or obtained a licence fraudulently.

I know a guy you got a truck licence without ever have driven a truck.

R600.00 there you go big boy you may now legally drive a truck.

This is Dark Africa people. Corruption is how you do it.

They lucky that someone actually comes to collect them for work. I have to get there myself.

If you want to see a free-for-all, come and check out the students in Potch! Luckily I drive a 2½ ton monster with steel bumpers, otherwise I would not be here today...

My dad some years ago used to drive trucks for a transformer repair company. His assistant had a truck licence and was driving, they were in the slowveld area when they came upon a hill with a sign for trucks to engage a low gear, my dad asked the assistant why he is not downshifting and mentioned the sign....the answer? The guy could not read! So how did he get his licence? Needless to say that was the last time the assistant got to drive!

The disconnect between races in this country is sad. Some have pointed out, and ridiculed, the comments of those on the website referring to the farmer not providing proper transport. Yet on here we have others immediately drawing conclusions about the driver without all the facts. It seems we immediately pick sides based on the presumed race of those involved.

Farmers have been transporting workers with trucks from their place of residence to the farms and back for many years.

When we were still farming we used to do it daily as well. It is accepted practice, even though some people would say we are carting them along like cattle to the slaughter.

The other alternative is for the farm workers to make use of public transport.

We gave our workers the option that we would pay for half of the transport costs if they wanted to make use of buses or taxi's. They chose the free truck transport.

We were a commercial farming operation that relied on seasonal labourers to an extent, so purchasing and running a bus did not make any business sense, as it would stand for 6 months of the year.

A truck was equipped with a canvas tarpaulin to give some protection from the elements. The tarp could be removed, and the truck utilised in the general operation of the farm.

We lost trucks twice in the late 1980's and early 1990's due to the "riots" that occured during those days and were petrol-bombed.

Another was lost in a traffic accident, when a car drove into the side of the truck while the truck was parked. The car caught fire, which spread to the truck...

Fortunately there were no deaths in any of the instances, although their were some injuries.
