Finally, this past weekend we made the time  to complete our knife making project. The leather work was  straight forward (it's been a hobby for many years) and I also made N (who gave us the knife making course for free) a little gift to say thank you. As inadequate as it is, I hope that the forgemasters' apron will save him a few painful burns and cuts.

DJR, do you mind sharing the course details?

Making a knife is one of my goals for this year.

I've sent you a PM

Why the privacy????

Been watching a number of youtube videos on knife making, more so knives not requiring forges.

So my next project will be making a knife using either a rap or a file.

No hardening required as it is already hardened steel. Worst case scenario is to temper it in an oven. Very doable for somebody at home with just basic tools and skills.

Why the privacy???? ..............

No real secret, just that I thought to answer Philip in his mother tongue. The person who did it for us does not do courses and basically did a once off. I recommended talking to the Cape Knifemakers guild because there must be someone in Cape Town doing it regularly. :)

Very nice! Some more info on that top one?

Ontario RAT Model 1 with D2 tool steel blade. At R850 this is by far the best value for money knive I have ever bought. Fit and finish is very good. They have some veriety in handle colours and it's also available with AUS-8. There is also a RAT Model 2 witch looks identical but is just smaller in size.

No way I would choose AUS8 if I can get it in D2 for R850...

AUS8 isn't nearly as hard as D2 but doesn't require the constant nursing to prevent rusting.

After a weekend of camping or hunting my D2 blades start showing slight signs of rust

True. I have some AUS8 blades and they are not bad at all.

Tool steel is usually a love it or hate it affair. I Love it and this

one is already showing some nice patina after a couple of days of usage.

Edit.

By saying AUS8 is not bad i'm meaning it's not bad for a "budget friendly blade".

Happy birthday and where did you get it from?

AUS 8 is one of those steels that seems to never get shaving sharp. I have/had 2 knives in AUS8 (or A8). And after a week by the seaside they also show small brown spots on the blade. I have had more success with el cheapo 8CR13MoV than A8.
