Long sleeves have to be worn in down hill

But I'm not doing downhill racing, it's trail riding. What difference does an extra 3 inches of lycra around you arm make when you hit the deck at 30km/h. I must admit, I was not aware of this rule at all, it seems ridiculous given the proliferation of sleeveless tops out there.

The no unecessary equipment rule is to stop dumbass accidents where Fred is trying to press go on his camera/sing along to Justin Beiber when he tail ends the rider in front of him - a bit like the "don't text while driving" rule. Keep the cameras and mp3 players for your weekend riding.

Sleeves I don't see what the fuss is all about? Surely it aint that hard to pop a shirt with sleeves on when you race sanctioned events? Personally I'm neither here nor there on this rule.

Society has taken an interesting turn in the last few decades - we went from enjoying rules to wanting to have our cake and eat it whilst riding and throwing the wrapper in the bush.

w00t.gif ok so I am the president of some cycling body , woke up this morning and my sleeveless shirt does not fit over anymore !! Lets ban this , I afterall don't need a good reason to do so ! Aaah now I understand , they worried the same might happen to me ?

Got fined for not wearing a shirt with sleaves.

By the CSA or by the race organizers?

From CSA's MTB race rules:

1.9.6 A competitor must wear appropriate riding attire, including a shirt.
This is all it says regarding clothing.

I heard the announcers at the last two Nissan Trailseeker races mention a rule about the sleeveless shirts.

I get the rules about ipods and the gopros. Those rules make sense. There is a solid, sure reason behind them.

I honestly don't get the rule about sleeveless shirts though. I don't ever wear sleeveless shirts, and I don't necessarily like them much, but that's not the point. Surely you can wear whatever you like? It's not like any of us are riding for pro teams, and getting paid to ride. None of us will ever win the race, and none of us take racing super seriously. Surely if I am more comfortable suffering for hours on the bike in a sleeveless shirt, I should be allowed to?

Like I said when I heard it the first time. Stupid rule. It's like this is a rule just for the sake of having some rules. Stupid.

P.S. I made some generalizations about EVERYBODY and NOBODY. You get what I meant! :D

I would hazard a guess that they needed to draw the line somewhere (to disallow Lance Armstrong banana hammock style outfits) and decided on short sleeved shirt.

CSA.

94.7 race when it still finished at Kyalami race track. I remember the aunti tuning me to come see her after the race.....I thought.....hey....me small town laaitie may have made an impression and they want to sponsor me.....so I went out of my way to find her after the race and she wanted to slap me with a fine.......

Took a LOT of sweet talk to get out of it.

And when I asked why there was such a rule....she said it was "dangerous riding with sleeveless shirts".

I did not stick around to query that after I got the fine squashed. hahahhaha

That said, I have no issue with the rule. Sleeveless looks utmost crap on a roadie and should be confined to mowing the lawn and mountain biking.....

Ah. You should have asked her to quote the rulebook, had she given you the fine (let's not be an ass, but there's nothing wrong with knowing the rules).

Sleeves will only save you if your shirt wouldn't have torn.... so that's a maybe, but it won't save you from "danger". Otherwise you should wear knee-pads too. But at the end of the day, there is no such rule in their Rules and regulations, so they cannot enforce it until they publish it as such.

A GoPro on your helmet I can understand, as long as they don't include "bike-mounted GoPro's" in the banlist.

Music players yeah. I used to race with one some years ago, but only ever in one ear (which is like half-deaf anyhows), Never had a problem, but I can understand that some people can take it to stupid-level.

At one of the recent races we got told the no sleeves thing has something to do with higher vulnerability to collar bone breakage.

mp3 players and helmut cams bans I will go with, but this is a serias nanny rule
