Like so many others, I too felt SICK SICK SICK when I heard this last night.Just seemed like such a nice guy. Feel most for his Cherise and family - you are in our thoughts.

It is up to each cyclist to take the high road. You can hate every taxi driver / bad driver but it won't change a thing. People must stop talking on their cell phones while driving (handsfree or handset) - you aren't focusing on the road. We're all guilty at some point or another, put your phone in the boot and you won't be tempted. I was nearly taken out by a guy who was yakking away. We also have to be courteous to drivers, say thanks/wave when they stop for you at intersections, indicate where / when you are about to turn, give cars right of way, don't ride 3 abreast when you should clearly be riding single file. Doesn't help when some are pissing off motorists and others are keeping in line. The bad, inconsiderate, windgat cyclists endanger us all directly or indirectly.

Wear bright colours, flashing lights in low light.

The other day a taxi pulled infront of me to stop for his commuters, but he was some way away, I had to slow down behind him as i couldn't pass due to traffic - I showed him to go ahead but waited for me, waved me by till i passed, we exchanged a wave and thank you - they're not all bad, one must just give respect to get a little back. I know it's rich coming from someone who hasn't just lost their loved one, but we have to make the best of this - i'm a cyclist, my fiance is too - I shoot up prayers everyday we go out that he'll come home safely. This is the best I believe we can do.

After all the bright colours, flashing lights and reflective wear, get a rearview mirror as well. Cateye makes a decent one. It feels so much better to KNOW what is coming from behind. IMHO I do not think it will fit pthe style of most cyclists........ Style se gat!!!!!

Personally I think its time the various cycling bodies/associations become more active politically as well as legally? If nothing is going to happen to the murderers on our road due to an inept state prosecutor then surely civil proceedings for various damages can be brought about by lawyers against these people who should be kept of the road.

Nail on the head there buddy. So true - refer all the deaths during the past year.

Outcome........? It happens ALL the time and is about to happen again.

Time to stop buying licenses to pressure CSA? The pro's will license but the rest of us must ask what I get for my license fee!

If we dont buy licenses we cant race, so we are really on the wrong side here...

How did the accident happen? If the taxi driver wasn't charged, one has to wonder who was in the wrong and its strange that none of the details have been made public yet?

What we do not need now is some fool embarking on some vigilante action.

What we do need is for cyclists to get their own house in order. Cyclists must be IMPECCABLE in their activities when using public roads. To many callers on 702 said that the universal salute used by cyclists are the stiff middle finger. We cannot start dictating actions if our own house is not in order. Once we can truthfully say we a clean, we can do our thing.

I cannot understand that it always needs somebody to die to galvanize cyclists into action. Why the hell can we never see what is wrong, correct it and then take action. We always blame the administrators and the paltry money they earn from us. We never blame our own middle fingers.

I am angry! I am angry that cyclits are being mowed down! I am angry that a champion and a gentleman has been taken from us. I am angry that selfish car murderers are getting away with killing us. We need to be heard!!! This cannot continue

If I have the story straight, it happened on this corner. Burry was going in direction that the camera is facing which is down a bit of a hill, and the taxi was coming from the front, much like the red car in the photo. If I look at the gradient of the hill that Burry was coming down, I'm guessing he easily could have reached over 50km/h. If the taxi turned into Stott street at the last moment and Burry hit the brakes as hard as he could, he still would have hit it over 40km/h. That's still a major impact. RIP Hero.

Big E, yes you are right in a way.. SA cyclists need to stand together and fight for their rights....

Do you think impeccable behaviour would have helped Burry and probably the majority of other cyclists who have been killed in traffic accidents?

Motorists driving badly and breaking the law while driving cause tragic accidents and not only with cyclists but also with other motorists.
