 I have just had that experience with a fall i had last week . The over tightened shifters were wrecked to the extent that both levers were bent and would not operate the derailleur front and back . The bolt / nut holding the front brake onto the fork was so close to being stripped that the jolt as my bike hit the road   snapped it lose . Stick to the suggested torque dont use the old mans method tighten just before it snaps and then give it a quarter turn back .  :thumbdown:

 

Also consider a turn of plumber's tape under the mounts so they don't bind if hit. A dirt bike thing for some.

Where would one take a torque wrench to be calibrated ?

 

Mine is a Teng that I bought more than 10 years ago.

It's lived in its plastic case and never been dropped.

Funny story, might save someone the embarrassment of having a product returned to you by n client:

 

We use torque wrenches on our production floor, but a couple of times now we have had issues with bolts being found in the system that had come loose.

 

Long story short: The Torque wrench was being used in the bottom part of the Torque spectrum and the "click" which happens when the set-torque is reached turns the small bolt in the opposite direction, thereby undoing it a little-bit. This bolt then comes loose on the Shaker during final inspection.

 

Rather get the right sized tool for the job, don't use it at the edge of it's abilities.

Update (for what its worth):

I dropped my torque wrench off yesterday and picked it up again this morning. Minor adjustments, a bit of oil and a calibration certificate for R400.

I'm currently looking to buy a torque wrench that will cover the basics on a bike - i.e seatpost clamp, components and crankset. 

 

Most of what seems available would cover the 2-14n.m range, but that would be at the near limit of what my Shimano Hollowtech crankset requires. (12-15n.m). I'm assuming that will still be adequate?

 

The other part would be as to what's available at present with stock of a lot of items fairly limited online. Are there any bike shops where one can buy a torque wrench in this range in the Jhb area?

He needs something that goes up to 15Nm and you offer a solution that tops out at 5Nm? I don't think "game changer" means what you think it means.

At R180, this seems like good value for money. But it seems a bit overkill for a bike. Perfect for the Car/SUV though:

There is a similar unit available for the 3 to 14N.m range, form a T-wrench.  I since bought the pre-set T-wrenches for 5 and 6N.m, and dont use this "dial gauge" model.

 

 

The traditional torque wrench units are handy when building a bike.  For normal maintenance the pre-set T-wrenches are PERFECT.  :thumbup:

I have this 5N.m unit.  Then 6N.m unit is used more often though ..... then again, that would depend on which bikes you have ....

 

 

YES, these units WORK !!!

 

 

Worth noting that Parktool has a similar unit, with the functionality to set the torque value .... this may be perfect for most DIY work.  Then invest in the next size torque wrench for the bigger bolts.

I've been waiting for this to be in stock and now that it is, I'm planning on ordering it :)

For higher torque settings have a look at the Giant torque wrench set as well. +-R1300

 

Jacques I have that "dial gauge" unit .... the pre-set units just work SO much better !!

 

 

With the dial you need to eye-ball that needle perfectly, and it is "interesting" to get that needle to the value, without going a bit over ....  Now try that the three bolts holding the stem in place - look from the top ... torque up .... walk to the left of the bike ... torque up ... walk to the right ... torque up ... heaven forbid the steering is slightly skew ....  :wacko:  :whistling:

 

With the preset one you TURN, and if ratchet-clicks at the set value - NO way to over tighten !!  :clap:   And no need to walk about trying to eye-ball a needle ...

 

 

As I say, this tool is just gather dust.

 

 

EDIT - as an extra tool for the odd bolt at a different torque setting this tool may be handy .... (for these I use a traditional torque wrench)

Look for a 2-25nm unit. My suspension pivots for instance require one pivot to be at 20nm which you can't get with the 2-14nm range.

 

Look around at engineering and tooling shops not only bike shops where your range will be limited.
