Ecko_1 Posted November 18, 2013 Share Yoh! What a day I enjoyed the route of the race. Definitely a tougher route than Amashova, although the climbing is not as much. I managed a 4:31 (was hoping for sub 4), but i am happy considering I started at 10:09. Experienced quite a few delays in the race. Had 2 punctures around 30km in, and all riders were stopped en route for a few minutes while they landed a helicopter to airlift a rider. I also needed to stop at almost every water table in the 2nd half of the route as it was just so damn hot. I was told that temps peaked at 39 degrees. I think the event was pretty well managed, given the magnitude of the event. I wasnt too happy having to ride 5+km from my car to the start, but served as a warm up. My only issue is the Momentum watering stations. There was way too much congestion at every one of these, and I even had to stop and unclip at 2 of them, even though I wasnt stopping, because there was no way to ride right through. It wasnt neccessary to have the stage across from the watering tables, narrowing the road. I had some fun trying to locate my car afterwards, as I no nothing about Jhb. after asking a few locals I eventually found my car, 7km later. I would do this race again, if I have a decent start time. Cant ride in the baking sun again. I am looking like my black kit that i wore on the day. Started like a bat out of hell. Which blew the bunch apart. So not much bunch riding to speak off although there were some wheels to grab on to. Rode with Cav for quite a bit in the earlier part of the race but got dropped on one of those long downhills. Was a great day! I'll get the road bike out again early 2014. I saw that Moolman won, but according to racetec, 4 women from D batch took the first 4 spots and beat Moolman by 7 min or so. Does Moolman win for crossing the line first? and the women that got a better time get nothing(maybe a sponsor afterwards). Its just difficult to read that she won, then see the results show differ, and by such a big gap. In pure racing like the Elite category, it's not the finishing time that matters, only finishing position.Imagine the Tour de France. 'Dale Posted November 18, 2013 Share My wife gets my vote for perseverance on the day. She started in batch HH just before 09h00 and finished at 16h30. I think she cried all the way from the dip at the N14 to the end. She says spectator encouragement helped her all the way to the end, they even went through her rucksack and fed her whatever was left in there. She just made the last cut off point and encouraged her to rather push through than be swept. She had a brain op in April and this was her first real long ride since being back in the saddle. Consider riding for a charity. It was the first 94,7 for my wife's and she secured an 8:20 start by supporting "cycling for pathways". Gandalf Posted November 19, 2013 Share The bumps in the road are quite hectic, I'm always scared I lose a spoke like I did at the Emperors and that was at a slower speed. Some of the bumps on the 94.7 route are on downhills where you are cruising at easy 60km/h and are situated a few meters apart. I tried bunny-hopping(just slightly lifting the bike actually) over them and landing as soft as possible. A dismount due to hitting a bump and losing a spoke, that's when I call it quits at the 94.7. There seems to be quite a few accidents en route, hope all of them are ok and wish them speedy recovery. I have done worse routes so cant complain. I had a good time. got my PB. my friend did his first 94.7 on a bike that I sponsored to him, did a 5h, but he loved every minute of it and he is pretty hooked on cycling now (next year sub 3 for him).
