Rim tape for tubeless tyres

Hello All,

I am on ZTR crest 29" rims and had great success with tubeless until I changed from a Bontrager to Scwalbe tire. 1st few rides where fine, but suddenly the back tire just went flat, Cant find any place where Stan's is leaking out so my conclusion is it must be crappy rim tape. Obviously I just put a tube and came home. What baffles me is that this morning I reseated tire without tube, added fresh stans and it seems to be holding??

What rim tape do you guys use?? I am not convinced this is the end of my troubles and would appreciate any comments

All the best

I like the tape that has fibre strands in. Cant remember what it is called. You can buy it at Waltons cheap cheap

Gorilla Tape or Duct Tape

I have used both Stans and Gorilla tape. Both work perfectly.

On the Stans rims I would use the yellow Stans tape, used the same tape for more than a year!

On my new Giant wheels I have Gorilla tape. Must say, it works very easy, no problems...

I asked a similar question at the LBS and they suggested using a 26er (I think) inner tube and stretching it over the rim (using the tube's built-in valve), then using a razor blade to trim the edges.

yes what dee-biker said, I have done a few conversions for mates with the old mtbikes that have oldish deep rims, where you just take a 20inch tube and slice it open and use for a liner. Works great. Trim the edges like mainroader mentioned.

When the tyres bead is a bit loose and it doesn't want to pump take some ryder sealant and paint the tyres bead and the rim tape and wait till its nice and sticky, it will inflate much easier. You can still use stans sealant inside.

That rubber over the spoke holes concerns me. The thing is with Stans tape is its very strong and sticky, even then after a while when you service it you can see the indentations of the spoke holes. How the rubber of a tube will hold, I have my doubts.

btw I do an annual service of my wheels, which includes truing and re-taping.

Hi

Could be that the tyre burped itself, allowing air to escape.

Installation of a rim strip would secure a tighter seal as it will be rubber on rubber.

One question tho, why are there forums that advise and use rim tape only and some that use rim tape as well as rim strips?

Maybe belt and braces... Insulation tape first and then Ghetto Tubeless?

On the subject of Ghetto Tubeless, is it a once off conversion that needs to be repeated every time you change a tyre or remove a tyre or can you take tyres off and replace without replacing the split tube?

Regarding ghetto tubeless, I'm pretty sure you don't have to replace it when you take your tyres off. Also, regarding the comment about rubber and the spoke holes - I don't know, but I heard that one of the South African riders at the DH world champs in PMB this year used a ghetto tubeless set up, so can only assume it must be legit. Perhaps a layer of insulation tape would help, though it seem seems pretty flimsy compared to a tube.. just my 2c :)
