Fraud on the hub - beware guys!

Dear Hubbers,

I've recently been victim to fraud by a person who saw my add on the hub. Please be careful during sales guys! The person wanted to buy the bike and paid R2000 too much money into my account. He then asked me to pay back the money so he could pay the courier to fetch the bike. I waited for bank notifications first - this person also faked the cellphone notifications. I checked on my bank statement and money was supposedly in the account after 2 days under the name Gregg Davies. I then asked him for bank account details so I can pay back extra amount. After 2 days he sent me details of another person's account (which was frozen). The guy kept calling and bugging me for the money. Then ended up saying that his wife doesn't want the bike anymore because she's in hospital with cancer and I should please help him by paying back they money. The payment he made ended up being a fraudulent cheque.

Beware of this guy. His cellphone no. is: 0726052301 (for what it's worth!)

Oldest scam just in another form .Fraudulent over payment ,then long story and wants overpayment back .So the scammer gets you to pay him legit

What I do is check seller/buyer feedback and posting activity on the HUB before dealing.

Then, when listing something for sale, I don't incl. the email or phone option... PM only... buyer has to contact you through the HUB.

If I'm not at ease I will suggest that we swop out copy of ID's and proof of address but even this can easily be faked.

Recently bought something here from a Hubber that's been registered for a while, no friends on his profile, no posts. Wasn't sure how real the add was. Asked him to deliver the goods for cash at a friend of mine in Centurion - all worked out good.

I generally trust Hubbers with feedback or other regular HUB activity.

I've bought 3 things lately from hubbers with zero posts, obviously lurkers, one guy though had only been a hubber for a few days.

You can ascertain from the ad and pics listed and the manner in which they reply if they are genuine or not.

That being said all the items were for things under R500, over that I may not have been so keen. For smaller value items I suppose you can safely bet that no one is going to ruin their names and have people on their cases for such limited returns.

Speaking of IDs, you guys know there is an online site where you can check the validity of an ID number. And there's also a mobile app. Pretty useful. I'm on my phone now and to lazy to find and post links now

Unfortunately I don't think it verifies the actual ID number as being valid, it uses the Sa ID number specification to see if it is a theoretically valid ID but that's it. No one could allow open public access to SA's ID number database....

I think he is refering to ID construction verification

Ja that's it, it doesn't verify that's it's an actual valid ID number, just that the numbers theoretically could be real, so in essence it's useless.

So im considering buying something from a hubber

i've checked "previous hubber posts" etc, pm him instead of e-mail and phone calls. but would it be stupid to trust that the fellow hubber will send the product(s) advertised once i pay? i am too far away to view the item, but the guy seems legit...

YohhH! in todays day and age, i just dont know. don't wanna get bitten.

Call him and have a chat, make the call as to whether a scammer or not.

Get place of work if in doubt, and check that out.

But rest assured, most sellers/buyers are legit here, I have done a lot of buying and selling.

Sometimes sellers will take a chance and pass a dud or imperfect item on to you without you knowing, that has been my only problem.

Where is he located? Perhaps get a hubber you know to meet the guy and make a cash payment and receive the good there and then...

Surely if the money is showing in your account and the check turns out to be fake the bank can't then deduct it from your account?

they should wait for it to be cleared before it reflects in your account?

You can phone them up and ask the method of payment - I do this and whenever it is a cheque I wait for it to clear.
