While racing the 42km route at Buffet Olives MTB Classic I had a little fall which popped the little ball stem out of the out of the socket because the circle clip popped out of it's housing.

Neither the c-clip nor the housing was damaged in the fall and it's simply a case of enough force being applied when the brake lever hit the ground to pop the c-clip out so it ended up looking something like this... (not my bike btw)

I took my bike to Olympic Cycles thinking they could just pop it back into place with c-clip pliers as illustrated below:

I was told they were very busy and I could only get my bike back the following day. I arrived at Olympic expecting my brakes to be fixed and to pay them a minimal fee as it's a small job I just didn't have the tool for.

I was told I would need a new brake lever at R345.00 and brake would have to be bleed, another R175.00! Then they only had one white lever in stock but suggested I change both ("otherwise my bike will look silly") and new stock of white levers will arrive on Friday.

So they basically tried to rush me for R865.00 for a job that should've taken no more than a few minutes and one tool.

Now either the mechanic doesn't know how to fix brakes or someone's trying to pull a fast one?

Lucky a mate of a mate has a pair of c-clip pliers and it's all sorted free of charge over a few beers in a few minutes...

Crazy, I bought a new set of those Tektros for R700 odd a while back!

Had a situation recently where I found the rear shifter cable started to fray. I was told that Campy cables are only sold in sets, (front and rear, brakes and shifters, inners and outers all together). No other alternatives. I said thanks, but no thanks. Somewhere else replaced the rear shifter cable for R150, labour included and left the other good ones alone.

Moral of the story, dont take your bike to Olympic for services, always had issues, tisk tisk Warren_G :P

On the up side, the exact same issue happened to the exact same brake lever on my bike (we have the exact same models, Scott 950). A quick visit to Crown cycles and Mark refitted it without cost, if anybody else needs a decent LBS in the southern suburbs then Crown are the right guys.

Just down the road is crown cycles :P They always been helpful to me!

Because they so helpful, I'm having to wait a week to get my bike back.

It used to be a case of pick it up later, or worst case, tomorrow.

I couldn't believe how busy they are.

many many many negative stories about that store. But they have their clientele.

Personally I prefer to do my mechanical work myself or take it too Epic Bike SHop or WIlliam's in Somerset west,(55km out of my way) or have Mellie at Bridge do the work.

Bowmans would also get my vote

The Cloetes down the road would get my money too.

+1 for William's. Rare day I trust my bikes anywhere else

Go to Crown Cycles or Luke in Tokai. Olympic are a rip off. The last time I took a bike in there was to get the brakes fixed and when it come out the bottom-bracket was knacked. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the BB bearing etc before I took it in. Got it back, jumped on to see if the brakes worked and the BB was stuffed and needed to be fixed

Olympic are great for accessories and components, but they seriously suffer in the service department. Way to busy, with way to few skilled mechanics. I dont even think the staff get their bikes serviced there :P

Learnt my lesson, I just shop for parts there and other little things, bibs/shirts etc

Crown usually does all my servicing, and Freewheel for any very specific stuff.

This is very seldom the case. I think before and after big events, they are quite busy naturally but any other time its usually a next day thing.

Nothing puts me off a bike shop more than trying to trick customers into unnecessary expense. Mark at Crown Cycles is super helpful.

I must say, however, that whenever I go into Olympic I make it clear that I am not keen to spend bucketloads of cash, and enquire extensively about the options available. With that I've always been met with prudent advice as to which option is the best value for money etc. I was once advised *not* to buy their rim tape and instead to use insulation tape to do it myself. That sort of thing could just be a strategy to get my loyalty so that I'm back later. Olympic also has a much larger variety than most LBS's, including lower cost options (in tyres, for example).

Despite that, such behaviour is unacceptable - hopefully they will learn, though it seems unlikely.

Luke is great. He has even had the patience to sit with me in the evenings, after work, while I built up 2 of my own bikes in his workshop. Was lots of fun and I learn't so much.

Yip quick quick...10min with a ghetto bleed on XT's. The trick is not to force the syringe though, it could damage your seals.
