Hi everyone

I want to get a new set of mtb pedals. I only do xc riding. I am considering shimano (m520, m540 or xt), crank brothers egg beaters or Look S-track. I am leaning towards shimano as my current set of shimano pedals is 10 years old and still running. What I can gather from pedal reviews is that eggbeaters are light but not as durable as shimano and needs a rebuild every once in a while. According to the reviews the eggbeaters can damage the soles of your shoes as well. Couldnt get a lot of reviews on the Look S-track. Shimano reviews - not the lightest but bombproof, put them on your bike and ride! Any advice, suggestions, information about what pedals to go for would be appreciated???

Light and bling but requires maintenance....egg beaters

strong, less maintenance but heavy....shimano spd 540's(basically XT's without the badge)

If your shimano pedals is still working, why upgrade?

Gave my old bike to one of my friends but took the pedals of to put on my new bike.

My friend got cycling shoes and I told him I will give him the old pedals and will get myself

new ones.

So if not shimano pedals what is the alternative and why?

crankbrothers and look I would think both are lighter and more bling but not as bulletproof...

Choose your poison. I like shimano spd's

Look Quartz and S-track

I loved these pedals in there 2nd gen as the spring was tighter.

  • Super mud/snow clearance as they have the the spring cage
  • If you want float then these are your pedals
  • Bearings don't last forever
  • A small problem for me was that the front clip is the one housing the spring whereas shimano sits at the back. When you hammer out the saddle with a lot of weight over the front, you can feel the spring giving, which means your foot might come out. On shimano its no problem as the front clip is the stationary one
  • Also consider Time. Lots of very good reviews and apparently better bearing life
  • No tension adjust on these pedals. They will be either right or wrong for you.
  • Quite expensive compared to shimano

I just ordered a set of S-Tracks for the Epic next year. Will ride my Quartz till the are destroyed while training.

I've ridden a set of Candy's for a short period of time (2 months), never enjoyed them, too loose, seen a set that hit a rock, 4 entry points became 2 & they wear grooves into your shoes. Now try juggle to find the 2 working entries, need to be serviced regularly.

I have Shimano XT on my SS, Look S-Track (Std ver) on my dual sus. I'll be moving to Look S-Track completely. They are tighter than the Shimano's but release like a bomb. I found with Shimano, springs are external and require a bit of maintenance else the release is less than desirable.

My rating:

1. S-Track is still new(ish), i've hit a few rocks etc and they've held up very well, haven't experienced clay type mud but the clearance is good with "loose" mud, i do tap my shoe to clear some mud before trying to cleat during muddy conditions. There was a S-Track thread on the hub.

2. Shimano's are bullet proof, besides the lubing springs, i've hit rocks on many occasions and they've held up very well. I've also opened up the axle to pump in more grease but that was quick, easy and painless. If i had to, i'd go back to Shimano.

5. Eggbeater/Candy's
