porqui Posted January 10, 2014 Share So I get taken out by car today. Just come down Chappies into Hout Bay Main Rd. on level doing about 35km/h near entrance to Shoprite and woman in oncoming lane decides to turn right (no stop 1st) while looking AT me - keeps on going. You know the feeling - everything slows down - remember to feather the rear brake - see if you can go round behind her - SHE STOPS - heart stops - no more options.Hit back door onto roof down hatch tar waiting - remember relax don't tense up - roll on tar.Sprawled.How I don't know but all still intact! Woman gets out of car and come up to me lying on my back "Are you alright?" She then says to me "Why did you carry on going when you saw me turning?" Me utterly dumbstruck! Rata Del Spruit Posted January 10, 2014 Share She then says to me "Why did you carry on going when you saw me turning?" "Because, physics." Sorry about the crash but good work on crashing well, that's a skill in itself. How's the bike?
T-Bob Posted January 10, 2014 Share She then says to me "Why did you carry on going when you saw me turning?"Me utterly dumbstruck! Faaaarrrrrrrkkkkk..... that is classic. And not in a good way either. Glad you're okay though and glad you can type a good post. That part of the route is such a black spot, I've left more than enough rubber on the road there before trying to avoid exactly the same situation. Always there. Now for pt2 of the story. What did you say to her on reply?
HappyMartin Posted January 10, 2014 Share At least you are OK. And I just love that you used the word temerity.

braailegend Posted January 10, 2014 Share At least you can tell the story, next time might be different.. rather brake, the idea is to ride/drive defensively, not to stick to your right of way...

I think he didn't have a chance to stop. He said they were looking at each other, but I don't know the specifics. Maybe brake before hand next time (luckily there is a next time), knowing its a crossing with more traffic.... its harder rationalizing yourself alive again, than just slowing down to manageable speeds at crossings, expect the unexpected. Got respect for you guys riding on the road, as I cannot see myself risking my life every ride.

South African drivers just freak me out. Capricorn

porqui Posted January 10, 2014 Share braailegend - I was all over my brakes - feathering so as not to lock up rear brakes if that happened I would have been under her car. Not much rubber on the road when running 23C's at 8 bars. There was no chance to even think of "right of way" and even less to consider it. Bike is ok just had to do some re-alignment. As for chapter 2 - I just told her to get in her car and go - any more comments from her and I would have lost it. Just got to watch anxiety as an incident like this can bite you sometime afterwards.Had a bad one some years ago - took me about 18 months to get completely over it.This one by comparison is minor
Capricorn Posted January 10, 2014 Share glad you ok. Love the unintended admission of guilt by the driver. slowpoke

Happy to bomb down a mountain mindlessly, as in some way it feels like a controlled environment, but on road everything is almost out of your control.... and much more deadly
nuge Posted January 10, 2014 Share glad to hear you're ok. observations from personal experience that seem to apply to this case:a lot of motorists don't see bicycles as equal road users a lot of motorists severely underestimate the speed of an oncoming bicycle although it's hard to swallow (and many will disagree, for valid reasons), weighing up the course of potential outcomes, i think you did the right thing in the end.
