Anyone heard of Hugelkultur? Interesting way of using wood, cuttings and compost to create a long term living environment

My grannny used to do somthing similar to this. A hole would be dug, not very deep probably around knee deep, but it was always a big square or rectangle. Once it was spilling over it would be closed and a week later she would plant stuff. Somtimes some of the seeds of the vegetable matter would grow

The runner beans are up and heading for the Sky ( fee fi fo fum)

The cabbage, swiss chard and lettuce have all popped up and are looking good.

Watering in this hectic hot weather is a must, I think I need to put up some shade cloth to protect the seedlings.

I can taste them already

ORGANIC  ( bwhaaa I so love this "word", marketing gimmick)

Shade cloth is a great idea. Try get the white. I read somewhere that the white is best.

Keep all your old egg shells, crush them a bit and sprinkle them around the veggies

You can use silica dust. The sharp edges slices them and they 'bleed' out.

Try going out with a torch in the evening every now and then, they are active at night and are easy to see and pick off. Secondly they love beer so leave a bowl out for them to drown.
