as per Crow.

This is what I want for my next bike

Nice looking frame, great attention to detail, pity they have not made it with sliding dropouts so that can be used geared or SS... then it would be a beauty....

I rode 32x18 and 19 in the Cape in December. All good. 29er, steel, suspension fork, 12,5kg.

I did the Garden route trailseries race (58km, 1950m ascent) on 32x18. Ok, it did hurt a bit, a 19T woulda been better.

HOT DAMN!!! That's some serious climbing on a SS. Big up dude, I can only imagine how that must have hurt.

34x18 is a great everyday gear. Perfect for modderfontein/big red barn and such.

34x17/16 on flatter courses.

Raced Serengeti on a 34x15 but it was a bit too big in the mud. 15 for dry - 16 in the mud.

34x19/20 for the hillier stuff.

29er on all the above.

Edit: That said there is no right gear - there is only a right gear for you and the course.

I ride a 32*18 round Rietvlei and I manage mostly but not on any black stuff or Grahams Grind ..... having said that it bit hard a few weeks ago and hurt my hamstring so at the moment it is sitting all sad in the corner of the garage. Haven't even washed it, that'll teach it to hurt me!

EDIT - just to add that it's probably cause I'm old and decrepit :whistling:

Need some advice. Going to Jhb for the long weekend and thinking of taking my SS to Northern Farms. My friends there all have geared bikes and want me to join them. Is Northern Farms suited for a SS with lots of twists and turns or is flat roads that will make me spin out?

Edit : My setup is 32:18

That is exactly the ratio I ride there...

If its a 29er you'll be great.

on a 26er you may spin out a bit if your mates are race snakes. either way you'll be good.

I have a 34:16 on a 26'er and ride only mountains here in the cape, and spin out as soon as it goes flat, If its a 26", that ratio will not be much fun riding with non SS guys.

I'd rather push last part of a climb, but be able to go faster on a straight.

I ride ss now 80% of the time. I walk into the garage and I take the ss.

Has any one compared their geared vs ss average speed. on the same routes.

I find that I am only about 15% slower if it is single track. ( Braamfontein spruit,Delta park, Albertsfarm route)

Things to consider. I havent ridden my geared bike in anger all year and I chase every thing on the ss.

My legs feel more damaged after a ss session.
