I have seen today 2 African men walking with 3 rims on their way to a scrap meatl dealer from Kayamandi direction. Can it be that they are selling the parts for scrap?

Actually you might be on to somthing. I know plenty of mechanics that collect scrap aluminium from engines. They get paid a pretty penny per Kg

Your bike is at the Cloetesville police station, check page 2 of today's Eikestad news for the article and photo. Contact WO Charlton Pietersen at 021 809 5062 or Serg. G.O. O'Brien at 021 888 5940

Hope there will be a prosecution...or mob justice??

Glad you found your bike man!

Just a thought though, why do you and so many others commute daily with such expensive rides? If you can afford a decent ride, surely you can afford a second cheapy for town commuting? My commuter cost less than most peoples tyres.

I cycle around Stellies every day and never have to stress about theft.

Sympathies for those that get nicked at home, now that pisses me off big time!

Come on, common sense…

Why should one have to even have to fear your bike being stolen .... whether you are there to watch over it or whether you are out riding it ......

Many of the bikes that get stolen in Stellenbosch get moved to the Blue Downs area. Tons of high end bikes there....

This has been going on for DECADES

I had my prized mtb stolen in the early 1990s...from a locked rack in a "secure" complex.

Sure you shouldn't have to fear for your bike being stolen, but such is life in Stelliebos :P

Again I say... common sense

Of course we shouldn't have to fear for our bikes being stolen. But hey, if you can prevent it, why not?

This being Stellies and the engineering faculty being here and all, aren't there some electrical engineers out there who have some ideas on a little tracking device so that we can track down these low-life scums and give them "verbal warnings"?

I spoke to our lbs the other day here in Mosselbay and he said that because of all the theft of bikes in Skelmbos, the bike shops there has got the biggest amount of new bikes sold per month.

I have noticed an inordinate amount of people reporting bike thefts over the last few months in Stellies. Thieves there obviously have a viable market for what they steal, pity the cops can't do some legwork and crack it.

And that is what I will be doing. My 10yr old 11kg+ roadie I use for my daily commuting and road races. I think I deserve a light, faster, meaner etc bike but will continue using the kitchen sink for commuting, it doesnt solicit any interest thus far and save the new bike (whenever) for races.

But Oufy, this is just it. You dress for the commute not for a race. Look at all the jackings. The guys dressed like they gonna race are the ones jacked, cause immediately the jacker associates the lycra, fancy shades with an expensive bike. But hey thats my opinion

A bike that flies under the thieve radar is called a nail. Soos in 'n spyker.

The idea is that it is ugly, unnassuming, does not look like much and won't garner attention.

The problem is that the tikkoppe in Stellies that steal bikes are not known for good judgement. They have broken into my car and not taken anything. Smashed a window to see what was inside, got nothing and left.
