Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge 2014

All things considered, this years 947 event was a success!

Its harder but better course (after removing the dull N14) in my opinion. As I predicted two weeks ago, even the pros were something like 12 minutes slower than last year, mostly due to the new terrain.

I must add that the descent into Steyn City is a little 'hair raising' for a mass attendance event. Braking on cobbled corners while in a group is just asking for trouble.

Otherwise, thanks to all involved for putting on a great race and doing Joburg proud.

Big generalization there dude.  I raced the first lap, its hammer down and speed for a time.

Did the second lap with the wife, I pushed a cow bike over Nelson Mandele bridge, pushed older ladies and gents on the hills towards the Lionpark, and generally encouraged guys and gals when they seemed disheartened.

Raced the first, but loved the second.

This is my way to take part, to give back to the sport.

Exactly!

I also did a second loop while encouraging and cheering people on. I pushed several others up the final hills and even blocked off traffic as a CHOC tow-bike came down a fast downhill. I freewheeled most high speed downhills instead of 'racing them' and did pacemaking the entire N1 South for some stragglers.

I enjoyed the new route but definitely harder.  so try to figure the impact of the new route, the guys winning time was 12min slower, female was almost similar to last year?

True. The course was tougher. Men ending up with 12 mins later than the previous year.

In the women category their difference to the previous year was about 8 minutes. Buf it you take the world champ Marianne out of the picture, Mrs Moolman-Pasio finished +/- 12 minutes behind the 2013 ladies winner's time too.

But let us look at Marianne compared to the 2013 ladies winner Kirsten Schut, 6 minutes difference.

My point is how hard the ladies train to compete and how they were always getting less prize money than the men. I am truly happy that it is now equal. How it should be.

Hey its a bicycle race. Time to let those "purely MTB" legs of yours do the talking and enter and ride it.

Glad your daughter enjoyed. I saw lots of Dad's with kids on the back of tandems, some pretty young. It was pretty amazing.

The other thing i decided is to get another tandem. Man those things are fun. I was so envious of all of them.

Yup, I will definitely be riding next year just for the pure fun of it. I was also looking at the tandems with envy yesterday...that looks like an absolute blast!

It was harder but I don't ride for the profile, I ride for the journey, that includes views, I found the undulations tedious to say the least, especially through a private property development.

Kudos to my dad who rode his 3rd 94.7

He started cycling at age 66. He is 4 months short of his 70th birthday.

He started in JJ riding with the charity bond. He rode for the Chris Hani Baragwanath Paediatric Burns Unit (Bara Burns).

We met him at Hyde Park corner. (56km into the race)

He was already cramping and had received physio at the previous watering spot.

My brother and I had already finished our ride and had the car with our bikes on the rack.

I suggested he bail as I knew what was ahead.

He was determined and said "no, Im going to finish."

He had already finished all his Nutrition, so we re supplied him with bananas, energy bars and gels.

He eventually finished in 7:39

He stopped at every watering point along the way and at 3 more physio stations for treatment for his cramps.

The satisfaction in his voice at the end though was priceless.

Speaking of SS and MTB. Saw a guy on the road with one of these belt driven SS as opposed to the normal chain SS. Then was this guy at finish with a SS fatbike. This guy must've been riding that thing. Did not know if he passed me on the way because must've been close to 3 hours or maybe even sub3. I started in M did a 3:54 after my wheels came off at the Steyn City climb and this guy on the fatbike started in W.

Kudo's to both of these guys on their machines.

Also earlier in the first 10km's there was a minor crash with a few people going down, one chop was screaming at the fallen riders as he was approaching them "Get out of the road!!". I mean really.... A guy laying hurting on the tar and your only reaction is to shout at them because they inconvenience you???

Yep.. Johannesburg Style.. they do the same when driving and some obstruction is ahead.. hoot and flash but not slow down

Had a great day :-)

"Wendy" just before Joe Slovo and checked she was ok then just kept going . . . Played "Frogger" with pedestrians when we went past Ponte but other than that, no issues. Love the decents past the Zoo and through Randburg. Road got a bit dicey in Bryanston (those guys obviously don't pay their rates!) but we stayed upright. My son binned me going up Witkoppen from Douglasdale (how rude!) and I didn't reel him

haha that is hilarious ......damn dangerous though...

My 2c:

This was my first road race, and it was heaps of fun.  I started in WW (should have started in II, but alas, the traffic..).  I rode against myself, trying to see what time I can get.  Managed 3:38, which I'm happy with.

2nd lappers:

The only chain I could find to ride in was led by two second lappers, groups A and C respectively.  I stuck with them for a part of the M1, until they dropped speed.  As a newbie I really appreciated them - I'm not that good yet at setting myself a realistic pace.  I saw many second lappers helping other riders - kudos to them!  Personally I feel that the problem at the back is selfish riders - those who stop dead in the middle of the road at a water point, who will push their bikes uphill on the right hand side...
