I was planning to post a question regarding the My Citi buses running the route between Hout Bay & Cape Town.

I have had some very close calls with them since they began operating.

I was hoping it was just new drivers getting used to the dimensions of the bus and gaining familiarity with the road.

The question was: Has anyone else had similar bad experiences with these buses?

I was in fact discussing this issue this morning with my training partner, when we arrived upon this:

After chatting to some of the witnesses, apparently the bus was going too fast and ran out of road. It connected the parked (and thankfully unoccupied) black 1 series BMW, that impact sent the bus into the oncoming lane where it impacted the truck.

It seems that no one was seriously hurt, thank goodness.

The bus driver was stretchered away, i was told he was in shock but otherwise OK.

Those are the facts as relayed to me by witnesses, they may not be 100% accurate.

We arrived on the scene just after the emergency services, in fact some emt vehicles were still arriving as we stopped.

It's a miracle that no one was hurt, but the possibilities are frightening.

That road, and pavement is used by cyclists, joggers, walkers, dog walkers, nannys, prams etc.

Anyone unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place would be very lucky to survive.

this very morning where that pic was taken I was passed by the same my citi bus on two occassions(and then closer to camps bay) and on both occassions the bus passed me with very little gap in between. I get the sense okes need to get use to bus, i hope so, and quickly

Only a matter of time until there was an accident there. The road isn't or wasn't wide enough for a bus and truck to pass each other because a concrete baricade was covering part of one lane.

I've had a few close calls with cars passing me on that stretch. The City have had four months to clear that section up but nothing will be done until it is forced upon them.

Not so keen to cycle around there anymore, pity it is part of the Town-Chappies route. Was always close with just cars. Now add the Citi's driving (and stopping). Eina

Those guys are dangerous, they always seem to be speeding. Yesterday infront of the civic center a bus didnt even bother with the bus lane but instead drove with normal traffic until the stop and then pulled. Glad no cyclists got hurt, especially oufy :whistling:

My Citi Bus drivers are son of bitches!

I havehad several encounters with them where at pedestran crossings they simply run straight through whether you are already on the crossing or not. They're just taxi drivers with a bigger weapon to initmidate and cause harm.

I witnessed a pedestrain get struck by a My Citi bus that proceeded to run over the fellow. He didn't make it.

This Citi clearly does not work for me.

That is a road not designed for buses! Sketchy even when cars pass you. I wonder who does the homework on the bus routes?

That road is a town planning disaster, vital access road for a number of areas and it's mostly barely wider than the size of a suburban lane.

you should hear what my father says about town planners I can't even repeat it on here I would get banned forever ...my old man is an old engineer and designed a few famous roads around the cape and western cape so I respect what he thinks about engineering issues...

Funny you should ask that. Also had a scare from a My Citi yesterday morning just past 12 Apostles hotel. Came past with the left wheels over/left of the yellow line. Felt like he was 10cm away from running us over... Was wondering the same thing as you since it's a new experience on that route.

They speed because they are paid for the number of trips they make. There have been reports of some of the drivers skipping stops to get back quicker

I heard they are performance monitored with GPS, including when they break the speed limit. Seems to conflict. My sources could be incorrect though.
