Why do they normally fit the larger diameter brake discs on the front wheel ? The rear brakes are used more often ( with my riding style anyway ).

You can apply a lot more power to the front brake before it lets go than the rear (due to the weight shifting forward as you brake).

 

You may find a larger rear rotor just locks up more easily?

Front brake stops you quicker. I use front brake a lot more than rear brake. Maybe learn the habit of front braking, as its much more effective than the rear, which has to do Traction, Braking and (on full sus) move a lot.

 

I run a 203mm front and 160mm rear

Bigger means better. larger area, less heat build up. Front brake always the strongest, less weight on rear wheel, so it tends to lock up and slide. same as a motorbike, large 300mm+ discs on front and just 1 small one on the rear

You should be using your front brakes much more than your rear brakes (like 70% vs. 30%)

 

The rear wheel locks up a lot easier than the front due to physics; Centre of Gravity, etc.

 

The front brake will also stop you a lot quicker.

I am a big guy and run a 203mm in front and 180mm in the back on my Tallboy. On my 26er had 180 and 160 and continuously struggled with overheating. Never had that problem since I gone big and using the Shimano ICE Rotors.

 

All the previous comments are correct. Your main braking wheel is front like a motorbike. I ride motorbike as well and I have actually setup my mtb and roadbike with right being my front brake! Being right-handed and riding motorbike I find I modulate the front brake better with my right hand.

Cars also have larger front brakes as compared to rear. The term used is Feather when controlling the pressure on the brakes!

Should use 2 sets of pads in the front for every set at the rear.

I do mainly Adventure motorbike riding and it is mainly on the dirt and I can tell you if you misbehave with that front brake you will have a very similar experience as with your MTB :eek:

Brake BEFORE the corner, not in the corner. (It's actually quicker)

 

A light feather in the corner is fine, just don't drag the back wheel.

Sooo many people wrecking our trails because they believe locking up the rear is the quickest way to stop.

Feel like samcking them against the head!!!

 

You should hear what the trail builders say!!! :whistling:

 

Anyway, how's the chain/derailleur setup working now?
