Having just completed the Epic my thoughts wondered to - which do you prefer and why...

Me - Joberg2C wins hands down.

Epic was great, riding with olympians/world champs/national champs/world cup champs etc was awesome. Epic has been on my bucket list for a few years and the people I did it with were unbelievable but I couldn't help but feel it was more hype than race.

Epic has the cash, sponsors, branding, reputation etc but I guess I'm just a "small town kinda guy". For me Joberg2c is all about the trail, the ride and the people. Epic I felt was just unnecessarily rough - lots of severe climbs coupled with severe descents with rough trail and rocks in between. I whooped for joy many more times at J2C than Epic.

Don't get me wrong - I loved Epic - I just loved Joberg2c more. I like the informal approach - the 3 stooges giving nightly commentary - the local food - the purpose built trails etc.

Epic is tougher - you *** more to finish Epic. You have a greater sense of accomplishment after the Epic. Joberg2C you have your fun during the event.

Entry fee is of course a no brainer - almost 2 J2Cs for an Epic.

Hmmmm perhaps I've just answered my own question in a different way. There is no better or worse - just different races aimed at different people. Enjoyment in both!

Here endeth the rant :-)

I had the same sense where I compare the Epic with the CPT, but I found the CPT just as hard as the Epic, despite the stages being shorter - althought we kinda raced the CPT where we rode the Epic more conservatively.

Sweet...so that settles it then...will do another j2c rather.

Roadie - don't do it! Many more stage races that need doing. Mauritius, Madagascar, CPT, jozi2cozi etc. We are frikkin lucky in SA to have a multitude of stage races on our doorstep. Not enough time to do any of them twice!!!!

*** and betaal bru :)

Having done neither I cant comment, but certainly agree with you generally about the less commercial less branded more rider-focussed of the J2C and other events here. And lets face it, the 'Berg holds massive potential. And much nicer terrain.

Can't comment on Joberg2C yet - give me a month and we'll chat again ;)

However, I completed Epic in 2013 and I'm glad I did it. Will I spend that sort of money again - no.

I did my third Cape Pioneer in 2013 (yes, it was a busy year!) and I'll be back for the next 10 years. Some days are just as tough as Epic, the race is just as well organised and you get certain sense that it is about the riders - they really pull out all the stops to make sure that you're looked after. I also prefer the idea of a journey and being in a different dorpie every night!
