Anyone know when road bikes will begin the mass movement to 1 x 10 /11?

:whistling:

It's coming ... SRAM has already released a Force 1x11 group for CX...

I'm going to try a 1x10 setup on my road bike for a while as an experiment - 53 chainring with 11-32 casette.

I just fitted a narrow wide 36t RF chainring yesterday and going from a 3x10 it was a big leap. Took it for a spin this morning and had to push myself hard to climb but all good, (The fact that there was now handlebar space for my dropper switch also helped me move to 1x)

Drop down to a 34 or a 32....less walking more pedaling.

Welcome to the 1x movement, you will become a stronger and fitter rider for it!

Your right 34 would have been better, but im a sucker for pain.

stronger indeed. lighter aswel. when i say push, i mean push the sweat outta my skin.

On the plus side, im happy to be part of the movement.

When coming from a 3x setup I though it was the best thing to have a 2x setup.

That was before I discovered a 1x setup!

I run a 34T RF NW (no chain guide) on my Cotic BFe with a Zee RD & 36-11 cassette. Zero chain drop to date.

My Shova still has a 2 x 10 setup for the steep climbs though.

Been contemplating going 1 x on it, but the idea haven't materialised...

I like the S.Steel single ring idea as well a the "1 click" rotation tip & flip / flop recommendation.

Hi guys

I'm planning on going 1* very soon, I've got a few questions though. My current setup:

3*SLX crank

11-34 SLX 10sp cassette

XT clutch derailleur

I need to replace my cassette and I'm looking at getting an XT 11-36 cassette. The clutch derailleur will work as is. I want to keep my 32T middle ring and ride with it on the 1*setup

I've got the following questions:

Do I need to get a wide/narrow chainring?

Do I need to look at getting the 40T or 42T gear to convert the cassette? I like climbing but I am not a power climber, I spin my way uphill.

How much weight will I loose by removing the front shifter/2 chainrings/FD?

Is there a performance difference between the ZEE shifter and my current SLX shifter?

Do I use the chainring on the middle mount of my 3* crank?

Thank you!!

I battled for a long time trying to get a standard 32T front ring to work.

It's not worth it, will ruin many a ride.

Just get a dedicated NW or I bought a Lee Daisy ring from CWC which has the longer teeth.

I mounted mine on the inside on the spider so basically where the middle ring was and it needs to be spaced slightly inward for a better chain line.

I saved 500gr when converting.

The 40T will help but all dependant on your legs.

Do it, you will not regret it.

The std 32t ring is not ideal because of its tooth profile being designed to pickup and drop off the chain to the other rings. However in saying that I used mine for a few rides just to determine how many teeth I wanted on my 1X10 setup. It did drop the chain once, one three rides so not terrible. I settled on 34t and bought a wolf tooth NW ring. Have never dropped a chain with it. XT Clutch at the back with no chain guide. I have an 11-36 at the back. This gives me 34km/h @80rpm and 8km/h @ 60rpm respectively. 29 inch hardtail. I've installed in the "middle ring" location so needed shorter chainring bolts. Chain line is ok but ideally it should be spaced in a bit.

I honestly don't why I didn't do this ages ago. I have all the gears I need. The only difference is now I actually use the whole range on the cassette. With a triple setup I just used a few at the back and changed between the rings at the front. Simple, clean, neat.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Whats your opinion on the ZEE VS SLX shifter?

Should I get the 40T or the 42T "Bail out" gear? I'm sure this will allow me to run up to a 34T in the front to increase top speed.

Looking forward to all the replies

I'm running a zee shifter on my zee derailer. It nice and works well. A little bigger and bulkier than a SLX shifter. Performance wise I don't feel a difference from my wife's SLX shifters. Would love to get a XTR shifter just for the slicker look.

I have to say with my short cage ZEE rear derailer I have never had a chain drop. I am running a standard Zee crankset with a factory 36t chainring. It is NOT a narrow/wide and have had no issues. It's is on a HT which does help though.
