This used to be one of commuter coffee stops before work .......... pre ^#^$# Covid that is.

They make decent food, and a good coffee.

We enjoyed flat whites and carrot cake after dreaming about the bikes standing on the showroom. ????

Was shifting stuff around in the garage and found an oil stain on the floor. So I started inspecting the Husky 450 and came across this

A crack in the ignition cover ????

I know how it happened (sidestand gave way on slippery driveway), but I didn't notice the damage at the time.

A new ignition cover will be around $200, but I see a number of KTM and Husky owners  who have also befallen the fate of "gear lever vs thin magnesium casing" have opted for the JB Weld ghetto fix.

Anyone here tried it before? Did it do the job?

Patch, what Husqvarna you have? Maybe we have something here we could ship to you.

Ordered some JB Weld. Fortunately it qualifies as an "essential item" so we can get it delivered under our NZ level 4 lockdown.

Plan is to do an oilchange at the same time so I'll take the ignition cover off completely and make sure the protrusion on the inside isn't affecting the stator. I'll then degrease the hell outta it, rough up a patch around the puncture with some 400 grit, and use my finest plastering skills to try get a decent finish.

????

You disappoint me.

By now I would have expected you to have build a forge and a sand cast box, cast a copy of that cover and then finished it off better than what the factory unit was.

It's a 2016 FE 450 and OEM version of the OEM version of the part is question is number: 78130002300KA.

Based on the bling I've seen in pic of yur shop, you guys probably do a lot of Hinson or Booysen upgrades too.

But yeah, PM me the cost of parts and shipping and maybe we can work something out!

Cheers Gnarly!

NZ level 4 lockdown rules strictly prohibit the building of forges, most other blacksmithing paraphernalia.

Jokes aside, I do have my eye on one of these at my local hardware store:

My welding skills are limited to watching my grandfather welding (and getting mild arc-eyes) and a few spot welds here and there in the mech workshops at uni. But I'm keen to learn, and the fact that this does MIG TIG and Arc is pretty cool!

Only 699 in Strayan shillings! ????

[EDIT/Aside thought]: A few weeks ago my wife and I were discussing the concept of a person's "wider economic impact" and how interesting it would be to graph/map it.

Kind like how they illustrate covid infection chains and. 1 person infects 2, they in turn each infect 1, but this infect onwards etc etc.

This thought came about as we have a friend who has a passion for fine wining & dining, but also loves to try rope other people into it, so therefore the wider economic impact of their last minute Friday night "let's go out for dinner" could easily be 1000's of dollars.

At the time I was quite smug that my wider economic impact as such was pretty low, as I have a very unrefined palate and am happy with takeaway pizza or burgers. However your comment has got me thinking that perhaps I was looking at the wrong metric (food/entertainment) and my tool/gadget buying influences should be what I'm really measuring ????

[Aside thought over]

Just picked up the little Duke from a major belt and valve service from Superbike Solutions in Sommerset West…….wow, the machine is the Mutts Nuts! Took her for a blast over the Outeniqua Pass yesterday. Today was the turn of Big Zed, not to be out done!
I have added a 14 tooth front sprocket in place of a 15 on the 1098. Works out to be about 2,7 increase on the back. Acceleration is great now and no need to slip the clutch. The bike was super hard to ride in town with the Racing ECU and 15 tooth front. 160 kph in 1st gear!
Anyways, grateful to live where I do for these machines to be exercised in the appropriate manner!

Whenever you post a pic of her my heart beats a little faster!

And I would certainly not say no to a nice little Z900RS!

This bike is also rather engaging. Way down on HP  to the Duke but it has a stunning acceleration. The engine is a beautiful piece of work, pulls effortlessly from 60kph in top gear. I have installed Ducati Monster bars and 1 inch bar risers, very comfortable riding position. She runs upgraded suspension front and rear. Lovely in the corners but likes to be set up correctly before corner entry. She is a tad flighty  if one needs to adjust riding position under braking for a corner. But more experience in the suspension adjustment may help!

I was happily on my way to doing a standard JB Weld fix, when in the back of my head I had your post about the forge and casting etc.

Realizing that I disappointed you, and hoping to fix my bike and my standing in your books, I changed tack and this was what I came up with.

image.png.c4dfe235dc19e161ca536da768960ca0.png

I cut and shaped a thin piece of stainless steel I had lying around, sanded back the brown paint (in the shape of the plate) and JB-welded it to the ignition cover. Hopefully it proves as a decent fix, plus adds some protection in the event of future incidents.

As for the steel plate, it was a plastering knife sacrificing itself to the motorcycle gods

Hope I've redeemed myself slightly in your eyes O great Hairy one! ????
