Went for a 3 day road trip form Cape town to Gifberg, Middelpos and then down Gannaga Pass. Man the roads there are in a shocking state and the poor beast lost a bolt or two due to the very bad potholes which go on for about 55km. Tiring too.

Such good people on the road and the trip was so good for a post-covid recovery.

I've ridden down that pass on my HT MTB after getting a lift to the top to stay at the lodge there. A harsh place that is.

Man alive those exhaust headers are just awesome

Confession time, that is a Motad exhaust. I do have the original but it needs a full restoration, due to dents and scraps from some spills in my younger years! The Motad is single wall V the double wall original. That is why I get blueing on the exhaust now.  This machine has had a sympathetic restoration as in a respray and new spokes etc. I kept the original rims, just polished them. The frame was also not resprayed and has the original battery stickers etc. The switch gear is new, genuine OEM Honda, but the clocks where left alone. New cam chain, adjuster and guides with a valve job. She runs new Hagons and front springs. Little machine handles really well and is a delight to ride. I have owned her for 40 years.

When I was growing up we lived in Welkom. Originally from East London so we travelled a lot backwards and forwards. One particular memory that stays with me, we were travelling down to EL in the dark. This would of been around 1981. Pouring with rain and a bike pulls up behind is and stays there. Would not overtake but sat there for kilos and kilos. We stopped in Aliwal North for petrol and the bike also pulls in. The rider looks like a drowned rat, totally soaked. He was riding a CB400F like yours. My Mom poured him a cup of hot coffee and gave him a rusk.

My Dad asks how come you did not overtake? He replied that the mudflaps on by Dad's Chev kept the spray down and as long as he stayed in the track behind that wheel and mudflap he stayed reasonably dry.

The memories that stick with us.

Love this story……of course if there is rain with in about 100 kms non of my road bikes go out now.  I was that drowned rat earlier this afternoon when returning home from Sedgies on my Orange 690R! Misjudged that in a bad way!

I hate seeing bikes for sale that are a good couple of years old and have not even broken into the 10K mark yet.

It happens easily.

I do the morning bus run with the gannets, so my only opportunity is weekends and school holidays. Then time on weekends are restricted to school sport outings, sport tours etc etc. The bike sees very little action other than school holidays and an odd Sunday.

So my KLR lives a charmed life in the garage, lightly used, mostly clean with a sprinkling of sawdust

Sounds like the life of my mountain bike the last year or two 😥

Yes, it was an adrenaline run for a bit although the photos and videos don't make it appear as tricky as it felt. Not keen to drop that behemoth at a place like that. Some photos from the upcoming video..
