No one go to the Bike Festival at Kyalami...?

Had a great day there on Saturday, lot's of good stuff to see, lot's of people, and Kyalami is looking fantastic

Had a fine day there on Friday, test rode some bikes, of which I see two in my future!

I really liked the Africa Twin. The standard tyre were great on the track and then I rode the one with knobblies around the short dirt course. I really like that bike. I think the power is enough for me. It feels much like my KLR in riding position, light and manageable but with a chunk more ponies stuffed into the engine!

Bloody fine looking bike too.

The other bike I enjoyed is the Thruxton R, needs those Vance and Hines pipes though!

The mass bike ride on the Sunday was fun, I hear there were over a 1000 bikes on the track. I was lucky to be right near the front for the slow cruise around on my old 90's Yam.

Got sorted for some new suspension for the trusty KLR, so over all a great day out.

After riding the Triumph Thruxton 1200R and expressing my desire, Honda go and tease us with the possibility of this!attachicon.gifimage.jpg

I find this a beautiful machine.

That looks a bit like the VMAX

CB1100 Gen, it is a concept shown in Osaka, more cafe racer based than the V Max. Rumour is the Big H are ging to build it.

Would be real nice with spoked wheels!

It is the bike many feel Honda should have built when they did this CB1100 a few years ago.

Saw AND HEARD the new V Max. It's one of those times when Big is too big. The rear tire is so wide that when the bike tips into a corner it squeals. I think that would be incredibly annoying.

So I might have accidentally bought this.....

I haven't seen it yet, but the guy tells me it's all complete and was running before he took it apart. Will collect it in about 3 weeks.

I really wanted a 175 because that's what I had when I was a kid, but I reckon a 125LC should be just as much fun....and I know Bosson make a nice pipe for the 125LC,and they respond well to a bit of cylinder work :-)

Ok so I have been a bit slack in not posting any updates.  I couldn't fetch the bike because I was in the last few weeks of training for Duathlon champs in Spain so I paid for the bike up front and planned to collect it when I got back.  Big risk I know, and given what we read here about how people regularly get ripped off, but I had a good feeling about the guy who owned it, and I guess sometimes you need to go with your gut!

Anyway I collected the bike two weekends back and I was initially a bit disappointed - the photo's must have been taken a while ago, because the bike had been stripped a bit more, but true to the guys word, everything was perfectly labelled, and sealed in a nice wooden box and I had driven two and a half hours to fetch it, so I figured what the hell.  How bad could it be!

Well after being a little disappointed that the bike in the photos didn't look like the bike I had committed to buying (and bought), I set about this weekend having a good look to see if I had been too hasty....

The guy wasn't kidding - every single wire, nut and bolt was individually marked, so for an OCD bloke like me it was brilliant. He had even marked LHS and RHS bolts....I connected the new battery and kicked it over - was relieved to see a nice fat blue spark. Things were looking promising! I poured some 2T down the plug hole in anticipation that I would start it soon.

He mentioned that the carb was "broken" and that not to worry he had a spare, but when I looked at the condition of the spare (off an AG175 I subsequently found out) I dismantled the "broken" carb and found a blocked pilot jet and a float level way out so I reckoned that must of been the problem.

So after removing the now famous golf-ball (a Top Flite I might add), checking that there was no crap which had fallen down the inlet, I poured some oil down the plug hole and kicked it over. All sounded good so I added coolant, mixed some 2T with the petrol and gave it a few kicks. I wish I could say it was immediate, but close enough, and about 10 or 15 kicks later it started....

Two things were apparent though - while the engine itself sounded really good, on idle there was a really nasty clatter coming from behind the water and oil pump. And it also felt very very rough. On all my bikes I replace the black OEM oil 2T oil line with a transparent one so that I can see the oil moving in the pipe, and in this case, I could see the oil wasn't coming through. Not good.

It wasn't getting any better so I figured off with the clutch cover. Was going to do that anyway to set the clutch so it wasn't a major issue.

What I found was quite interesting. At some stage someone must have replaced the crank seals and not tightened the primary drive nut. The primary drive gear had come loose, sheared the key, and both the primary drive gear and idler gear which drives the balance shaft were spinning away freely. The nut and key was scrap, and the thread on the end of the crank wasn't great, but the gears were still fine.

Into my box of DT200 spares, and lo and behold the nut, key and possibly crank looked identical. So I pillaged the nut and key off my scrap DT crank, applied loads of Loctite to the gear and nut and tightened as much as I dared (about 50N.m, recommended is 75N.m). Realigned the balance shaft, set the clutch, and put it all back together.

This time second kick and I think I have rescued a freshly rebuilt DT125 and found the reason why the guy sold it Cheesy

I have no idea how long the Loctite will last, or how long the motor might have run without the oil and water pump working but I will keep and eye on it, and if it comes loose again, well I have to split the motor to fix the thread on the crank, so I don't really have anything to lose!

So now it's new tyres, a few grommets, levers, a new ignition, and one or two other odds and ends, and I reckon I will have a brilliant little bike.

I reckon it's not going to cost more than another R3k to get it looking nice - they are not too collectable, but seeing as there are people out there who are paying upwards of R20K for a good RZ or DT50, and a 125 is at least powerful enough to use regularly, who knows!

The broken headlight cowl is probably my biggest headache right now - discontinued of course so I'll have to do some gluing. Not ideal, but I know a few guys who do it, so it should be ok. Just means I'm going to have to respray it. Which means I will need to do the rest of the bike too......

Dammit!

You can "weld" that plastic together, working from behind and using some scrap plastic of another fairing / cowling / whatever is handy, to melt the parts together again. I used to use a soldering iron with a broad flat point for this.

If you work carefully enough (and if the break was "clean") you will barely notice it from the outside / front. A bit of prep, spray, and Voila !!

Yup I had a guy do some welding on the front scoop of my YPVS - it was really bad, but when he had finished you couldn't tell where it had been done. Think I'm going to ask him to do this cowl, and then spray the tank, sidecovers and rear mudguard while he's at it.

Siiiick!

I love the lines on those Dt's, power wise when will a Dt200 pull away from a 125, right out the gate left in the dust or only a gear or 2 up?

I haven't ridden the 125 yet, but I did own an air-cooled 175 for many years, and the 200 is years ahead in all aspects, especially power wise.

The 125's and 175's were designed to be good reliable commuters and learner bikes. This LC shares a lot with the older air-cooled models so I reckon it will go as least as well as a 175, albeit with a bit less torque.

The DT200 on the other hand (Darren) was designed when the Japanese were trying to out-do each other in the technology stakes - DT200, MTX200, KMX200 and TS200 were all hi-tech road legal bikes which were very close to their Enduro cousins - WR200, KDX200, PE200- Crankcase Induction, Flat-slide carbs, Power Valves, Disk brakes, fully adjustable suspension - they were super advanced for the 1990's. There are guys still racing DT200's in Aus and giving the 4-strokes a good run....

I reckon the 200 will leave the 125 standing. For about 160km which is where the 200 will run out of petrol, and the 125 will trundle past for another 100kms.....

Bought tyres for it yesterday btw.  300x21 front and 4.10x18 rear Kenda's. With tubes and fitting came to R1200.

You can't buy two GEAX mtb tyres for that.....

Which is scary !!!
